Make sure to have good reputable refs to work this game. No bullshit calls, no 'make up' calls; if the outcome of this game is determined by ego-maniac referees, someone is getting cut.

I just had a flashback of feeling cheated after the Michigan game. it would be a shame for this game to determined by any other thing excpet by what happens on the field between the PLAYERS.

If I see that Phil Specter lookalike ref that worked the michigan game, I'm going to shoot my television.

i'd hate to see a repeat of '05. it took me a long-long time to get over that screw over. and it wasn't the bush-push that got me.....just all that transpired before that.

the clock ran out, the game was over......nd won that game. that was one of the worst arse screwing ref jobs i've seen in a long time. and i discussed the game with a friend of mine who's a college referee....he even said we got screwed. the michigan game pale's in comparison to that one.

is pete not allowing replay for this game too????

Yeah that will be quite interesting if he doesn't allow replay again. At least they get the call right the "majority" of the time when it goes to replay. Does anyone remember if he allowed it in 2007?

It's mandatory now. In 2005 coaches were still allowed to veto it, but now every game has replay...

The only thing I remember officiating wise in '05 was the clock running out but then they explained bc it was a fumble it actually saved USC. I dont even listen to the "bush push" crap, thats a good no call, im sorry but you dont call some BS like that in a game like that. If Darius Walker scores like that in a role reversal we would all be screaming to this day over that BS.

I guess what Im asking for is a refresher of the preceding calls in the game? I dont remember it being controversial at all.

I just remember they had an assistant coach on the 5 yard line trying to call timeout when they had none left after leinart fumbled out of bounds

no problem, it wouldn't be my pleasure but i'll do the best that i can.......sigh, deep breath, sniff-sniff.....

like you, i could care less about the bush push. and like it was mentioned just above this post, they had an assistant coach on the sidelines calling for a time out, when they had none.....but my friend corrected me later and said that the only persons the referee pays attention to are either the players or the head coach....nobody else. so that situation doesn't matter.

the one in my eyes that does is the line judge standing right there where matt linefart got stopped just shy of the goal line before he fumbled. again, before he fumbled the dang ball the line judge put his hand in the air and marked his forward progress with the whistle in his mouth blowing the ever living shit out of it.

the ball eventually pops out and goes out of bounds......where? at/around the 3, 4 or 5 yard line, right? so what follows......the clock running out cuz the line judge marked forward progress before the ball was fumbled and usc didn't have any time outs left. game should've been over at that point. but no, the effin poodle went ballistic on the sidelines and the head official allowed pete to influence the situation.

so what happened next? a little conference between the refs with pete in their ear. they go back and put time on the clock and say that the fumble should've stopped the clock (even after the line judege ruled his forward progress stopped before the ball popped out).

here's where we still get screwed, guess where they place the ball??? on the one yard line where his forward progess was stopped. not where the ball went out of bounds at/around the 3, 4 or 5. ridiculous. my 1st wife had to shut the door to the back deck cuz i was cussing up a storm.

so there you have it, nd got screwed royally by the referees. the clock ran out and that's it, end of discussion. the fumble does not matter after forward progress is whistled. game should've been over......it should've been over......oh boy, i need to take my pills again.

It does matter. He was out of the coaches box, which I believe is a 15 yard penalty. And the USC players (Jarrett and Leinart) saw this coach signaling timeout and tried to call one as well.

you ask any college referee (which my good buddy is one) and they'll tell you the same thing....under the circumstances with the tension being a bit heightened on that play, the referees will only listen to the head coach or a player. there were bodies all over the place, one assistant coach on the field is commonly seen.

the crap with the fumble happening after the line judge marked forward progress is the real issue. then to top it off, they place the ball at the half yard line, when in actuality the fumble went out a few yards back. to me the assistant coach is a non issue.

I know they only listen to players and the head coach. That's why I said that Jarrett and Leinart were trying to call time out as well.

And to be honest, the ref really couldnt tell where the ball went out of bounds. Replay was definitely needed in that situation. I mean I really don't know what they could have done in that situation considering they had no replay at all and all that the refs saw for certain was Leinart fumble the ball out of bounds while he was on the 1 foot line. It seems like the ball goes out at about the 2, but with where the ref was positioned and the players flying around right in front of him, I'm not sure what else he was supposed to do but say "ok he fumbled the ball and he was on the 1-foot line when he did so." To me, the assistant coach/players calling timeout is more of an issue then the refs making a judgement call on the spot of the ball.

Bottom Line: It sucked. We got screwed in many ways.

It also cost me big time, and I'm not talking vBucks. I'd driven to a sports bar 25 miles from my home to watch the game with other alumni, fans and their families. I drank a bit pre-game while meeting and greeting. Drank a bit more during the game. The hours of post game drinking – to dull my anger, console myself and drown my sorrow – put me a wee bit "over the line." Wisely, I called for a taxi and left my car in the parking lot. The cab fares to get home that night and back the next day to retrieve my car were pretty hefty.

the thing is the spot of the ball is a non issue too.....cuz the line judge called the play dead when he whistled at matt linefart's forward progress. when i look back on it, i don't recall any other person beside that stupid assistant coach calling a timeout, i'm sure i'm wrong.....but the other parts of that play are etched in my brain.
