The key to this game isn't NDs offense, they'll be fine. Can ND stop the run, so far this year it hasn't happened much. They won't be able to slow ND down, but can ND slow them down? 33-30 games are getting old, this is a statement game and ND needs it badly, otherwise they are doomed to wallow at 25-30 in the rankings. A win says ND is back and vaults Jimmy into the leader for the Heisman (If he has a good game).

A loss and well, you risk proving the naysayers right, yet again.

I like that you ignored my previous post

Control the line of scrimmage. Thats it.

this game can get out of hand really fast if our defense doesn't come right out with a stop on U$C's first drive. if the defense allows them to walk right up the field and chew up some clock, it will be a long day.

CW has to commit to the running game early and not give up on it if the Irish fall behind. this game is all about time management and CW has not mastered that yet. i'd like to see some Robert Hughes busting people in the mouth. if CW allows the run game to develop, JC will have a monster day and may put himself in the lead for the Heisman. the key is to run the ball right up the gut. our line is huge and CW must let them wear down the U$C defense.

this game will make or break our defense. if they can come together and play solid FUNDAMENTAL football, they'll do great. LB's have to fill the gaps and wrap their arms around the ball carrier. this BS shoulder tackling has to stop now. the d-line has to produce some type of pressure in the backfield without the aid of a blitz on every down. our secondary has to be allowed to play some bump and run instead of conceeding 10 yds off the line of scrimmage.

special teams need to perform. no long kick off returns. hit field goals and punt well.

if the irish can play solid in all 3 phases, i really think this game will break the streak that U$C is on.

So what you are saying is, if they play well on defense, offense and special teams... they win?*

*denotes sarcasm.

Protect Clausen. Contain USC running game. Hit Barkley in the mouth and rattle him.

GO ND!

jason h537, you are correct. If ND scores more points than SC, but doesn't play fundamentally sound, ND loses.

Surely you're not suggesting that Charlie run time off of the clock, by running the football, when he is losing?

Jimmy is going to need to move around in the pocket at least as well as he did against Washington. With no Michael Floyd safety valve, it created the time necessary for our receivers to get open and allowed us to sustain drives. W/o a similar performance I don't see how we could have a chance b/c SC is gonna have much better coverage on our receivers...they will need the extra time to get open.

I expect USC to throw a lot of screen passes like Washington did, when they arent running the ball of course. I doubt you will see Barkley taking a 6-step drop and going through his progessions. We need to be ready for a quick 3-step drop, delayed handoffs, screen passes, and them trying to get McNight to the edge.

Te'o Te' e' e' e' o Te'o be coming and Barkley better run. Barkley won't be sending them deep - at least timewise - those quick outs will have to be covered and (despite my cute little song - okay, tired little song) Te'o better clog up the middle on those slants I'm sure whoever calls offense for Carroll (the ex-Bronco's guy) has watched on film (Purdue). But, I truly believe even more than Te'o showing USC what they missed out on - LA will see how much they miss Shaq!!!!!! I think CW let's him loose on a GO (or 2) - he's been holding back for THIS game ;-)

CW will hold nothing back in this game. There is no point, it is more than probable that cw hasnt shown some things or some people in the first games taking certain chances because he knows that this game is the season. And Te'o in my eyes will not have an easy time getting to barkley he hasn't all year against mediocore offensive lines.

I have to disagree with you on this. The game was on the line versus Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, and Washington. Those games wouldve been the season rendering this game moot really. How could he have consciously held something back in those games thinking ahead to this one?

All I said was that he didn't throw any "Goes" to Shaq - or at all - He didn't need to. In that sense was he holding back. Plus, he's had 2 weeks to get Shaq ready. Golden's great catches against UW were yards after catch. Shaq's got height and speed - 2 things Golden doesn't have. I think we will see a few bombs with Shaq - if JC get's the time.

As for Manti - he's had almost no minutes. And they've come against offenses where you need stay-at-home disciplined guys - w/ experience. Manti is more suited to a pro-style offense. I want to see him against a pro-style offense with a weak passing attack.

Sure would be nice to see Floyd miraculously healed. Ive been thinking, ever since I was at the big house watching him skid into that brick wall, "we need this guy versus USC to have a chance"

I think he probably meant height and good hands, like Floyd.

Tate has blazing speed and questionable hands. He catches impossible stuff but then inexplicably lets easy ones bounce off

Im not saying they have this secret weapon 4 usc, im saying there are certain things he may have held back or developed for his players or players in general. He is arrogant so it wouldn't surprise me that he would say we can win and save things for sc, i mean Te'o playing basically all of th wash game along with shaq playing a good chunk is not just "feet wet purposes" this in my opinion is something weis wanted to do so that once the sc game comes he wants these guys holding nothing back and trusting that they will make plays and not hesitate, im not saying this is the only thing.

i am also more than positive, that James Aldridge could have played against washington, but weis said he was being saved for the usc game. Maybe certain packages he wants for James but doesn't want to show them before usc, it an example right there.

Shaq had to play. Floyd is down the next guy has to step up. Shaq played since game 1 so feet wet isnt an issue and Teo is a Freshman and started bc he earned it.

I think we all read too much into this stuff. The whole notion of "holding stuff back" to me is more myth than anything.

I think I understand what he is saying. For instance, Weis makes no secret of the fact that he likes to run the same plays, but out of many different sets. I think perhaps Weis has seen some plays that he thinks will work out of specific sets against USC. It's possible that he has run these plays already this year, but not out of the set that he plans to run it from, against USC. It's also possible that he has avoided lining up in a specific set or two, in order to try to catch USC by surprise. I don't know that any of this is true, but I think it's certainly possible. Regardless, I just hope that all three "teams" (offense, defense, special teams) bring their A games, this Saturday, against 'SC. There is a LOT for us to worry about, playing USC.
