This phrase has been used a thousand times.

But on October 17th, 2009, whatever happens will define our season.

Under intense scrutiny, this Notre Dame will have to put up or shut up.

Up against Southern Cal team who is ranked in the Top 10, at home, with a bye week, following a 37-30 overtime victory...this is it. What happens in this game determines whether Charlie Weis is the coach to bring Notre Dame back to prominence.

This is a huge game.

Yes, this is the defining game of the Weis era.

Jimmy Clausen, I believe in you. Defense, I believe in you. Charlie Weis, I believe in you.

Let's beat those Trojans! Go Irish!

If we were fully healthy then I would agree. But we still have a hobbled qb and are without the best receiver in the country. Those are pretty long odds to overcome

it's still a huge game. it's against a big time rivalry and it's a game that weis can prove he deserves to be where he's at. this is the type of game all fans love being a part of. i'm so pumped for this team, they have a chemistry that is 2nd to none.

Boy we could really use Michael Floyd for this game. I hope it doesnt come down to that. As good as Golden Tate is, Michael Floyd is the big dog on that offense.

No offense kmoose but you dont even believe that statement. Come on? Seriously? Youre gonna do the "its one game" thing?

Its USC and the elephant in the room is standing there wondering if Weis gets it handed to him, at home, versus SC with a Freshman QB, is it the end of the line for him.

THE Defining Game of the Weis Era

...

But on October 17th, 2009, whatever happens will define our season.

On 9/19/09 at 4:27 pm YOU declared:

This Season is Over<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

It wasn't even halftime and you ran up the white flag.

Now you declare:

Yes, this is the defining game of the Weis era.

Did you take all your meds today?

You and most everybody else put down an "L" for the USC game as soon as the '09 Schedule was posted.

How can this game be the defining game when you declared it a lose preseason?

How can this be a defining game when you declared the season lost 2 weeks ago?

... Defense, I believe in you.

This from the same person that wrote:

No pass coverage. Disastrous.

No pass rush. Disastrous.

This team will not finish any higher than 8-4.

This team was brimming with confidence and swagger, took a shot from Michigan, and have lost it all by halftime of thier THIRD game.

... Charlie Weis, I believe in you.

From the same person that 2 weeks ago wrote:

Get lost, Charlie Weis.

Here's your shameful post 9/19/09 in its entirety. I wouldn't want anyone to think you were being quoted out of context.

This Season is Over<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

<HR style="COLOR: #ffffff" SIZE=1>
<!-- google_ad_section_start -->This is horrific. What started as a promising, exciting season has turned into a disaster, an absolute nightmare.

Too early to tell? Yeah, in your dreams.

That's sixteen penalties in six quarters. Disastrous.

Injuries to our two best players. Disastrous.

No discipline. Disastrous.

Little to no pass blocking. Disastrous.

No pass coverage. Disastrous.

No pass rush. Disastrous.

This team will not finish any higher than 8-4.

This team was brimming with confidence and swagger, took a shot from Michigan, and have lost it all by halftime of thier THIRD game.

Get lost, Charlie Weis.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I dont believe this is thee defining game of the weis era....its a big game, as any game as USC is....but not defining.

If Weis wins, does all the Weis-hate go away? nope, it would only be subdued for awhile. When Weis wins one that makes all the Weis-hate go away, that will be THEE defining game of the weis era.

by the way...F* USC

Weis hate by who? First off, I dont think any ND fans "hate" Weis. I think many (like myself) are on the fence from thinking he was a guru to wondering if he is the answer as a head coach. (there is no doubting he could be a O coordinator anywhere, on any level)

The Yahoo's who really do hate Weis also hate ND as well so nothing is gonna change that. The people who go around making fun of his appearance and all the rest are ignorant asses anyway.

This game is absolutely a defining moment. How can it not be? if SC comes out and pounds ND by 30, nobody is gonna respect us coming back and beating fricken UConn or Washington State!

If they do come out and beat them it is going to be the biggest win here in years.

Now if we beat SC and then follow it up with a terrible loss at home to a bottom feeder, then its all for naught. But this game is massive for CW.

Nobody is gonna respect ND if the losses are to UM and USC again. Their wont be any BCS because the voters will pick apart that schedule and say we lost to the only big programs we played.

'defining game' is overblown...its extreme, its BIPOLAR. there is middle ground here, its not one extreme or other. You make it sound like if weis wins, and all is hunky-dory and if he loses he is fired.

its just not the case.

Coincidentally, its a big game for Weis (by coincidence), I believe this is a bigger game for Clausen, then it is for Weis.

This game is an opportunity for Clausen....not a defining moment for Weis. If they defeat USC it becomes a high point, or milestone of the program, but not defining. I'd argue that nothing USC does, defines Notre Dame.

College Football
Knute Rockney
NAtional Championships
Heisman Winners
Academic Standards
Graduating Seniors

this is what defines Notre Dame Football.

I respectfully disagree. I think there are many Notre Dame fans who hate him. I sat around several of them at the game on Saturday.

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depressive disorder or bipolar affective disorder, is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a category of mood disorders defined by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally elevated mood clinically referred to as mania or, if milder, hypomania. Individuals who experience manic episodes also commonly experience depressive episodes or symptoms, or mixed episodes in which features of both mania and depression are present at the same time. These episodes are usually separated by periods of "normal" mood, but in some individuals, depression and mania may rapidly alternate, known as rapid cycling. Extreme manic episodes can sometimes lead to psychotic symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations. The disorder has been subdivided into bipolar I, bipolar II, cyclothymia, and other types, based on the nature and severity of mood episodes experienced; the range is often described as the bipolar spectrum.

I don't know about bipolar. I found another possibility also quoted from Wikipedia:

Characteristics of people with antisocial personality disorder may include:[4]

Persistent lying or stealing
Superficial charm[5][6]
Apparent lack of remorse[5] or empathy;inability to care about hurting others
Inability to keep jobs or stay in school[5]
Impulsivity and/or recklessness[5]
Lack of realistic, long-term goals — an inability or persistent failure to develop and execute long-term plans and goals
Inability to make or keep friends
Poor behavioral controls expressions of irritability, annoyance, impatience, threats, aggression, and verbal abuse; inadequate control of anger and temper
Narcissism, elevated self-appraisal or a sense of extreme entitlement
A persistent agitated or depressed feeling (dysphoria)
A history of childhood conduct disorders
Recurring difficulties with the law
Tendency to violate the boundaries and rights of others
Substance abuse
Aggressive, often violent behavior; prone to getting involved in fights
Inability to tolerate boredom
Disregard for the safety of self or others
Persistent attitude of irresponsibility and disregard for social rules, obligations, and norms
Difficulties with authority figures [7]

Just giving you a hard time CTF...

In terms of how it fits into the grand scheme of the Weis era, I do. Remember when Michigan State was THE defining game for the Weis era? Or when Purdue was THE defining game of the Weis era? IF they beat 'SC, then maybe it will be a turning point. But the last 3 games will have laid the foundation for that point. And, IF they beat 'SC, then that probably means that this team is BCS worthy, meaning that Weis will be here for years to come, meaning that there will be many more pivotal games in the future. If they lose, and Weis is gone at the end of the year? Then the 3-9 season will define his tenure much more than this coming 'SC game.

In terms of it being a big game, and a chance to make a HUGE statement about the direction of the program? Sure, they don't come much bigger.

Alright, here's my opinion on the subject:

CTF is a member of this board and contributes frequently. We all have fluctuating moods regarding our favorite football team. At times I contradict myself, as do most human beings. There is absolutely no reason to call anyone out over a board free to express opinion.

Just as sure as you voice an opinion, and then change your mind, should you then voice it as loudly and proudly as before. For as we learn, we will change our minds.

That f-ing being said, we will beat USC, it dosen't matter what uniforms we are wearing, or what recruits are attending... If we win, we walk away triumphant. If we lose, I hope we fought a hard battle and give them a run for their money. If you can't handle those variables, then play f-ing golf and forget about football.

If Charlie retains or loses his job, big deal. We are ALL ND fans here. Now let's show the class of fan we are and keep things cool.

From my short time here, I've learned BGIF is extremely knowledgeable and a great fan. JTC rocks too.

"F-you, F-you, you're cool... I'm OUT!"

Huh???

I believe the appropriate term would be "bandwagon fan". Here when it's great....and head for the shed when it's not. There is no changing of opinion. You either are or aren't an Irish fan.. All-in...no do-overs....and this includes the players and coaches under "Our Lady's" watchful eye. I'm sick of the flip floppers. You're either with us or against us. There is no middle ground.
