i think with tebow and bradford going he is coming back. for three reasons. 1) to win the heisman if he does not this year. 2)win national chapionship 3) to get that top five draft pick with him being the best QB in my opinion in next years draft if he stays

Tebow is NOT a pro quarterback. I would love to rip on the idiot ass NFL scout that falls for him and talks a front office into a 1st round pick and I will mock that franchise forever.

Wow!!....I started this thread earlier today, and was away for most of the afternoon, then returned to find a truly excellent debate emerge - thank you all for the insightful comments!

I know everyone will likely think I'm naive and foolish to even THINK this would have any bearing on Jimmy's decision to stay or leave early, but is there anything at all to the fact that, in staying, he can walk away with a degree from one of the greatest universities in the land??

I know....I'm so wet behind the ears to even consider this is entering Jimmy's mind, right?

i think that if he comes out after this year, he'll be the best prepared qb in the draft.

i don't think he will come out though. i think he came to ND for a reason and that is to win the NC and the Heisman. he has a good chance of doing both in his remaining time in South Bend. (if our defense can improve vastly)

i don't see him leaving early for the draft even if the nfl does put a salary cap in place. his family isn't hurting for money, so it wouldn't kill him to "only" make the maximum rookie contract.

i really think he comes back in 2010.

An interesting thing to consider here is how much a quarterback benefits from staying all 4 years in college. Now, if it's simply about getting a big money contract, I'm sure Jimmy could care less, but I have to think a kid like Clausen genuinely cares about being a great QB at the next level. If that is the case, he'll make plenty of money in his career.

Look at the the successful QB's in the NFL: Manning, Brady, Brees, Matt Ryan, McNabb, Joe Flacco, Carson Palmer, Philip River to name a few.

The common denominator with all of these folks is that they returned and played 4 years of college. The got stronger both mentally and physically and, from a maturity standpoint, were ready to have great careers. Manning, Rivers, McNabb, etc. probably could have come out after their Jr. years and easily been 1st rounders, but, instead, chose to stay.

On the other hand look at Jamarcus Russel, Ryan Leaf, etc. who have struggled mightily. In fact, I can't think of any Quarterbacks who came out early and succeeded long-term (The Jury is still out on Sanchez and Stafford) Now, it may be unfair to compate Jimmy to Jamarcus and Leaf because I have to think his head is screwed on much tighter, but it's an interesting thought.

The best example is proably a kid like Stafford in Detroit. He got the contract he wanted. He'll be rich forever. But I find it hard to believe he will ever have a successful NFL career in Detroit where he will forever be rushed and put into a very difficult decision.

Forget about the Rookie contract Jimmy, return for your Sr. year.
Absolutely. I think it's important for QB's to return for their senior year. They need an extra year to develop mentally and physically.

* This is a topic that I don't want to read about, but it is something that all ND fans will have to prepare for. I think after the 09 season we will have an easier answer to share. I am 50/50 on this right now. In the latest Blue & Gold Illustrated Mel Kiper said, "Jimmy Clausen, to me, has first-round possibilities because of all that great talent around him." No disrespect to anyone else on the team, but Michael Floyd is gone for the season. Right now our only NFL prospect is Floyd.
* I also look at it personally for Clausen, I think he has received so much negativity from the ND community because of how he came to Notre Dame and this year he is starting to just get liked, not respected. I've also heard through that his dad is pushing him to go pro.
* On the other hand, many football players stay all 4 years not only for the football experience, but to earn a degree that will make you gold after an athletic career. We haven't seen the best of Clausen yet this year and I feel that we will see the best. I hope he stays, to me he is better than Brady Quinn.

As much as I love Brady, I have to agree with this. Jimmy, at times, can be the best QB in college football period. Tebow is good, but he's not a great QB, Bradford has a water pistol and in my opinion a product of the great system at OK, and McCoy has an average arm and can't throw it as well as Clausen.

McShay comments on this in the ESPN video at the link below:

Jimmy Clausen's toe won't be 100 percent this season - ESPN

He has Jimmy as the 6th overall QB (33 overall). I think he gets a boner when he talks about Jake Locker.
McShay's top QB's:

1. Bradford
2. Locker
3. Snead
4. McCoy
5. Tony Pike (cincinnati)
6. Clausen

He says late first round draft pick for Clausen if he finishes strong. IMO there are too many good QB's in this class that he will hold out and play his senior year with the hopes of moving up the draft board. (Tebow was not on this list...I guess that depends on where Jacksonville picks)

The injury may have an impact on any decision. It was nasty. Gosh dang it.

I think Crist will a be a super prepared and fantastic QB. He was impressive. He did throw too hard a couple of times but I think that was just nerves.

I would like to think Jimmy is going to stay. He came here saying he wanted 4 national championships, blah blah. I think after this year, scouts will tell him he will probably be the 3rd quarterback taken.

But if you look at the class after that, Clausen is almost a guaranteed number 1 QB taken. I would think he would stay based off that and wanting to finish things at ND with all the talent he has comming back.

But then you throw in the lockout possibility and it changed everything.

Jimmys attitude tells me he would want to finish what he started. He wants a title. But I would not blame him at all for leaving. I could see him saying, "listen I have full confidence in Dayne picking up the offense where I left off and feel this is the best decision for everyone."

Tate is one. He's a younger Steve Smith (Panthers one not Giants). And Rudolph may only be a sophomore but I think its safe to say he is a future 1st day draft pick.

When the coach is telling you to go, and there is a huge bag of money waiting for you, you can always finish your degree later. And if you are semi-smart with your money, you'll never have to worry about a career after the NFL.
The only thing that keeps him here is a subpar rest of the season because of the turf toe. And to say the only reason scouts are looking at him as NFL talent is the NFL talent around him is 150% ignorant.

Clausen is easily the best QB for the 2010 draft. I hope he comes back, but I think it is in his best interest to go pro after this year.

^Actually not true. Clausen is about number 6 on most QB draft boards and as high as number 2-3 on SOME draft boards.

A third QB in next years draft would go at the earliest late first round, mid- 2nd round. A number 4-6 QB is 2nd round and later.

Meanwhile if Clausen stays, he is undoubtedly the number 1 QB in the 2011 draft. The only reason I would see Clausen leaving after this year is bc of the possible lockout.

IMHO, he stays, watching him on the sideline after the UM,MSU, and Purdue game, he is so intense and has such a good relationship with Tate, Floyd, Rudolph, etc. he would want to stay and win that NC with those guys.

I'm hearing that he has moved ahead of both Bradford and Snead on many NFL teams draft boards. That they like his toughness, his leadership ability, and of course his talent. I hope he stays, because I would love nothing more than to have that same firepower all together next season. But if he goes he will make an NFL team happy, I think he has a chance to be a good QB. His mechanics aren't that great, and sometimes the decisions he makes are bad, but he still has all the ability in the world. Also hearing Locker is moving up quickly on many draft boards as well. We will just have to wait and see. But for selfish reasons as well I hope he stays.

I think Jimmy stays. A shot at a heisman, national championship, and a chance to go down as the greatest at ND will bring him back. This seems like a tight group and I dont think Jimmy would leave when they are this close to pulling it all together. Also, I still think he needs another year in the college game. This offense has not clicked without Floyd. Last season they down right struggled. I want to see how Jimmy responds over the next month. One more year of adding muscle and Weis' mentoring will solidfy his draft status in the top 15.

I agree JC is anywhere from 5-6 on most draft boards as far as QB's go. He is not coming out early to be a late 1st/early 2nd round pick! Next year he is a top five pick, period! Then we have to just pray that Rudolph and Floyd come back. How good of a draft could that year be for ND? It would be nice to see 3-4 ND guys go in the first round...JC, Tate, Floyd, Rudolph, are all potential first round picks after next year!

I'm not so sure that Tate is a first round draft pick

You guys underestimate the power of a bag of money. If the birds that be whisper in his ear that he'll be a top10 pick, in an uncapped year in the NFL, he'll be long gone.

We're not talking a kid from the projects here. Clausen comes from a family with a fairly healthy income.

I dont think an uncapped year is going to have a huge impact around the league. There have been numerous reports about owners and GM's trying to find a way to reduce spending in the current economic climate. Goodell has talked about doing away with the rookie pool, which could lead to some ridiculous contracts, but mostly smaller deals for guys outside of the top 10. This could affect Clausen if he enters because, in my opinion, he is not one of the first 4 QB's off the board. Late first/early second. With the uncapped year players will not be able to file for free agency until their 6th year in the league. with a bargaining agreement it would remain at 4. so if Clausen were drafted at the end of the first round, his first opportunity for a big pay check would be 6 years down the road, as opposed to 4.

If he comes back for his senior year, he will continue to get better, and be one of the top QB's off the board in 2011. Thus creating a bigger payday and getting an option at free agency after 4 years.

Then there is always the chance of a lockout.

ppl making too much about this uncapped season....

the economy still sucks, contracts are still on the lowside....do you think he would get a bigger contract now then other times? there is rookie salary structure in place, it can only be so big.

The biggest thing with the uncapped season is teams can now sign that big money free agent for big bucks....rookie contracts are for the most part locked in.

besides, after the Raiders got burned $30million by the worst pick in NFL history, I dont see any big guranteed rookie contracts going to anyone. (had to get a JRUSS jab in there)

As good as Clausen is, he can benefit from another year at ND, I think ppl will agree with that across the board. Look at Quinn, he is still having problems and I think he was well prepared.

Mr. Clausen will be back.....(trust me, I told you that Jacory HArris was a pretender too)
