Saw the headline and thought Rodriquez got religion and knowing he he had a ill gotten win was asking the Big Ten to do the right thing and overturn the biased calls that gave Michigan a victory.

I was wrong. He justs wants the Big Ten to punish other players that commit penalties that the refs never saw.

Yo, Rich, how about calling on the Big Ten to have honest refs that call the game impartially.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez says he will ask the Big Ten to punish any player for a non-football act after the conference suspended Jonas Mouton for punching a Notre Dame player.
Mouton did not play Saturday for the 25th-ranked Wolverines in their 45-17 win over Eastern Michigan.
Rodriguez insists there's no room in the game for throwing punches, adding that Mouton understands he hurt his team. Rodriguez says he told commissioner James Delany he will tell the Big Ten to hold other players to the same standard as it did Mouton for non-football acts such as his jab.
Rodriguez says what Mouton did wasn't malicious and shouldn't be compared to Oregon's LeGarrette Blount's punch against Boise State that led to his coach suspending him for the season.

I am sure that Rodriguez will follow suit after Colorado asks the NCAA to overturn thr phantom hold that sprung the Rocket and would have given ND another NC. Or ask them to overturn the fifth down against Missouri that gave them a victory. Unfortuneatly, sports is not about character anymore. I always get sickened when I hear so many programs talking about how sports builds character and helps mould men and women. I do believe that is how it should be, but I don't believe it has been that way for some time. Just like in the Olympics, when an American won the gymnastics gold a few years ago, by virtue of a scoring error but then kept the Gold even after such knowledge. I have told all my children that, I could put a silver medal on my mantle with pride and know that I competed amongst the best in the world and came up 2/100 of a point short from winning the gold. I could not, however, look at a lie everyday and know I possessed something that did not belong to me. Call me "old fasioned" call me a liar, call me stupid and naive, I don't care. That is the way I truly feel.

Think about it, ND and Alabama have the most college championships of any major college, but did you know that one of the championships Alabama claims was 1973. After an undefeated #3 ND played and undefeated #1 Alabama and beat them by 1 point in the Sugar Bowl 24-23. That year Alabama claimed the #1 spot and ND #2 in the UPI Poll. ND was #1 in the AP poll. How do you claim a National Championship when the you were beaten fair and square by the other team the team. By the way this was dubbed the "Game of the Century" in 1973 and very well might have been.

Mouton's punch wasn't malicious? Huh? Generally when one throws a punch for any variety of reasons, you are trying to hurt someone else.

That was one of the greatest footbaal games I ever watched! Ara really showed what a great coach he was with that pass at the end of the game when the Irish were backed up inside their own 5 yd line

there is no place in the game for a punch, under any circumstance. Mouton's punch was the EXACT SAME as Blount's punch earlier. Where they differ is that Mouton then tried to get away with it, while Blount decided to take it to the stands and start in with fans.

Both(mouton, blount) threw the first punch, both of their 'targets' didnt expect a punch coming.

Dickrod is just trying to save face after his "if there was an infraction, they would have called it' comment.

I bet Dickrod changed his tune after he saw/heard all the publicity the officiating in that game got, as well as the punch. I saw links to the punch on MSN.com, prolly the most busiest page on the internet.

Just think how ridiculed Ara would have been by posters on this board for calling that play today if it was an incompletion.

"How stupid can he be? He should have run the ball and run out the clock."

"Jeez didn't he take Coaching 101?"

Clements to Weber iced Bear Bryant who turned down a penalty keeping the ball and instead punted ND into a hole up against their own goal line. Ara had confidence in his players, did the unconventional and won a NC.

A coach is a hero when the play is executed properly and an idiot when the receiver muffs the catch.

I guess you do what you do when there is 4 minutes left in the game. When there is 2 minutes and 2 TOs left to give the other team, I'll run it out as best I can and hope my punter can kick something more than a 28 yard punt.

Damn good thing Ara was coaching and not you. ND took a one point lead with less than 4 and 1/2 mnutes left. Bama went 3 and out and punted.

ND got the ball on their 1 yard line with less than 3 minutes left in the game. Two plays got them a couple of yards but a False Start By Casper sent then back to the 2 yd line. On 3rd and 9 and needing a First Down to run out the clock. Clements dropped back into the endzone and hit his BACKUP TE at the 35 yds downfield to secure the win.

Ara was aware of the time, field position, momentum, and his players limitations in making the call. ND had a much better stable of backs in '73 than Weis has today. Wayne, The Train, Bullock, Art Best, Eric Penick, Al Hunter AND Tom Clements a running QB were all a threat to rush. Best, Penick, and Hunter were all home run threats. Clements was the second leading rusher in the game with 75 yards. ND also had an All-American receiver in TE Dave Casper.

ND's punter hadn't done a whole lot better than 28 yards having averaged 35 yds on 7 punts. With the ball on the 2 yd line he'd be kicking from the end line without the normal time to get the ball away. Bryant was instructing his Special Teams unit to go for the block on 4th down as 2 points would win the game. Bama would have good field position even if they didn't block the kick and they had a good FG kicker.

Ara replaced the Split End Demmerle with backup TE Robin Weber to set up a run with a double TE set with a full house backfield. Weber hadn't caught a pass all season and hadn't practiced for a couple of days before the game due to a knee injury. Clements was to roll out and look for Casper crossing over the middle. Weber was to go long. Bama along with the announcers and everybody watching bought the run. They stuffed Casper but Weber was free down the sideline and Clements hit him with his 7th completion of the game.

Ara went against conventional wisdom and he was a hero. Michigan had already stuffed Hughes and ND's two best runners were out of the game injured. Charlie went with his best athlete on the field (who dropped the ball) and armchair coaches label him an idiot.

Now that there is funny. I don't care who you are, that there is funny.

"Coach, I accidentally made a fist and threw it in an upward motion, catching that guy on the chin. I swear it wasn't malicious."

I wonder if Rich Rod cried, and said something about how hurtful it was, that the Big Ten might think one of his guys threw a punch?
