Aaron Corp and Matt Barkley are neck and neck in the USC quarterback competition. ESPN's Bruce Feldman says he wouldn't be surprised if Barkley started the season opener for the Trojans.

I said on this site that I thought Barkley would start by the ND game all the way back in March, and many people scoffed at it. But, unfortunately for ND, the kid is just a stud and Pete Carroll has a major league man-crush on him. He's just been killing it in practice, even last spring when he should've been a high school senior. Just go read what Nick Montana said about him at the spring game. I saw him play in h.s. and he was just as good as Jimmy (maybe a tad worse), but he played far better competition. Yes, he threw a ton of picks the first part of his senior season, but the 2nd half of the season he was lights out, and his jr year was off the chains. But INT's seem to be a problem for him, even at USC so far. But he's a big time playmaker who is earning the highest of praise from his coaches and teammates.

I've said all along I hope he starts against us, because I think he will have a hard time on the road in such a big game, and mistakes are inevitable. But long term, I'm not happy about it...

Sure in the long term, but who cares? I care about now. And with Tenutas blitzing pakages combined with Blantons ball hawking ablity, we could have a great day.

Corp's got a minor injury that is slowing him down right now. Maybe... that is all Barkley needs to get the top spot?

Prediction: If Barkley starts, Ohio State CRUSHES USC. I just think that starting a true freshman that is prone to INTs if someone gets in his face is a horrible idea. Combine that with losing four linebackers, their starting corners, and DT, the season may be poor.Anyway, I feel that USC this season is very overrated.

could not disagree more. whoever is playing quarterback for SC is gonna benefit from having a great offensive line and a stable of runningbacks that is at least 5 deep to go along with a very good core of receivers. yes USC lost some players, but what happened when leinart, bush, white etc left? RELOAD. one of USC's strengths will be their secondary. Wright, Thomas, Pinkard, Mays. USC and Ohio State might be a good game, but i think SC wins by 2 scores regardless of who is back there. OSU lost their three best players from a year ago, (Beanie Wells, Malcom Jenkins, and Laurinitus), a starting LB this year(Tyler Moeller) their only deep threat on the outside with any experience is awaiting grades to report to camp. (Ray Small)

Ok, you still haven't addresed my points on their defense. How do they get better from losing all those players on defense? They have Mays then who for stars? Plus they play at The Shoe! And my entire point was that Barkely is just a kid, and one who throws INTs like he's Brett Favre! If he has a gunslinger mentality going into a game with tons of pressure on the QB, he will suck. If I were SC, I would want the guy with more experience, like Corp, or even Mustain (if he doesn't completely suck). Barkley will be playing tough games on the road (ND and OSU).

Oh, and tell me how USC will stop Pryor? They sure didn't stop Young (who is similar to Pryor IMO) in the national championship with the "greatest team of all-time".

And don't give me that reload bullshit. You sound like one of these FSU and Miami fans down here. Where are they now? Not competing for national championships like before. The reload mentality ends for USC this season. Saying that OSU will crush SC may be an exageration, but I am absolutly confident that OSU will win.

USC has earned being rated high because they have consistantly reloaded, as much as I hate to give them any credit! I hope they have a down year but I just do not see it with the athletes they recruit year in and year out. Man do I hate USC!!!!

Methinks U$C will still win this year, but you are gonna see a lot more shootouts with U$C switching from an "air it out" o to a greater ball control mantra.

Actually, they bring back a lot more than you realize. Yes, they lose all their LB's, and that's where all the attention goes. Not only do they bring back Mays, a true superstar, they bring back their entire secondary, and their secondary was damn good last year. We all love our own secondary, but they can make an argument that their secondary is just as good as ours (I think they aren't). They also return Everson Griffin, grade A thug, who will create absolute havoc in the backfield all year.

And you may not like it (and believe me, I HATE u$c), but the truth is they do reload. I think they've been top 4 for the past 7 year in a row. That's ridiculous. 6-1 in BCS games the past years. So the proof is in the pudding...they do reload. They'll be bringing back 9 starters on offense as well, including their entire O-line.

Now, even with all that reloading, we've proven that we can play wih them and defeat them, even at their best. And now we starting to amass talent that compares to theirs. If there were ever a time during the Poodle era that ND beats u$c, Oct. 17th is the time...

They do have a great RB core, but what if they get too predictable? What if they are down early and have to pass? OSU are not chumps, they recruit very well too. But talk is cheap, I'm just bored because of no football.

USC's first-string QB to miss time with knee crack

USC's first-string QB to miss time with knee crack

USC's first-string QB to miss time with knee crack - CFB News - FOX Sports on MSN

8/13
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Southern California quarterback Aaron Corp has a small crack in his bruised left knee and will be out about two weeks. An MRI taken Wednesday revealed the crack on the head of Corp's left fibula. The redshirt sophomore was rolled onto by a lineman during Monday's practice.

Doctors found Corp has no ligament damage and won't need surgery. Corp was chosen by Carroll as the Trojans' first-string quarterback coming out of spring practice. Freshman Matt Barkley will take all the first-team reps during Corp's absence. Veteran backup Mitch Mustain is also in the mix.

Disagree Wabash. He's from my neck of the woods and he's a good kid, and very tough. I actually like him a lot, and he's getting a raw deal. He's dying to be out there, esp since everybody is in love with Matt Barkley, esp Poodle.

And Barkley has a tough go of it ths morning. Threw 3 INT's. I don't know how the afternoon went, but like I said, I hope he starts against us, cause he'll make some key mistakes. In the future though, he'll be lights out, which is reason number 2,639 why we must beat U$C this year!!!

First of all Terrelle Pryor is not Vince Young. Vince Young had a ton of gamebreakers around him. Pryor has who? The last five seasons USC has made plays through the air, but really made hay on the ground. only one year did they "struggle", that was in 2005, averaging 128 yards per game. the other 4, were 177, 194, 197, and 260. USC is running back U and will always run the football. Getting too predictable? dont forget about Damien Williams, Ronald Johnson, and even Stanley Havili getting the rock in the passing game.

It is virtually impossible for USC's defense to be better than it was last year. I am not saying that at all. What i am saying is that they will certainly be a solid unit. Poodle is a defensive mind after all, that has stockpiled this team with studs everywhere.

As for the game in Columbus, no doubt the shoe will be rocking. It will be a tough atmosphere for Barkley or Corp to deal with. As I stated earlier though, they are going to be leaning on a running game to get it done. you point out USC's losses, but fail to acknowledge OSU's losses. Is Ohio State's D going to be better without Malcom Jenkins, James Laurinitus Marcus Freeman and Tyler Moeller?

I pray Barkely starts against us because our corners will be so good that we can just put stack up against the run.

Not Barkley brother, Corp. I doubt that a CRACKED KNEE would only take two weeks to heal.

Matt Barkley threw 18 picks his senior year of high school, which is extremely high for that level.

USC is going to lay the wood to Ohio State on September 12th. In addition to returning a solid stable of running backs and the dynamic receiving tandem of Damien Williams and Ronald Johnson, USC will field an excellent defense. Ohio State lost almost everything on both sides of the ball: Chris Wells, Brian Robiskie, James Laurinaitis, Marcus Freeman, Malcolm Jenkins, and recently, Tyler Moeller.

Terrelle Pryor? If he has to throw, Ohio State is done.

But Terrelle Pryor runs a 4.33 40. No way you are stopping him!!!

Check out this article on last Saturday's scrimmage from a U$C writer on scout, who always calls it like he sees it:

Scout.com: Oldtimer's Take: Scrimmage Edition

The offense looked BAD in the scrimmage, while the defense just tore it up. He's right, their secondary (with a 6th year senior) is L-O-A-D-E-D and experienced. Our wide-outs and TE and Jimmy vs their secondary is going to be an epic battle. And I don't want to hear from homers who say we'll kill them easily and they're overrated and blah blah blah. They're secondary is not overrated, Mays might literally kill someone this year, and their DB's can flat-out cover. However, our guys are just as good. EPIC battle yo!

Now, let it be known that this writer has a brain, and has said from the beginning that he didn't want Barkley starting, so he writes with a slant towards Corp that most USC fans don't get. But I swear, Barkley throws at least one pick every single time they scrimmage. And that's with splitting reps. He's going to lose them at least 2 games unless he learns just to throw the ball away, which he won't because he's a freshman...

Taylor Mays is the player who scares me the most. Aside from hitting like a goddamn truck, Mays is the definition of a headhunter, he gets away with a lot of helmet-to-helmet hits.

I have a feeling Kyle Rudolph is going to get a lot of passes in that game. As will Duval or whichever receiver becomes the third option.
