#1 USC Trojans by Pat Forde

I considered Florida but passed. The Trojans have been a top-five program for the past seven straight seasons -- and much of the last seven decades. USC has replaced Notre Dame as the glam national program -- big TV ratings, has the guts to schedule ambitious intersectional games, has the clout to recruit wherever it wants. And no sign of slippage in the years to come. Fight On.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!-- end table -->
Ivan Maisel, ESPN.com: I wouldn't take USC No. 1. To be the best, you've got to fill the stadium even when you're not winning 11 games a year. The Trojans will get ditched like last year's starlet the minute they start losing. Do the '90s ring a bell?

They both have solid points about the USC program.

#9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish by Ivan Maisel

#9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish by Ivan Maisel

Wait, let me put on my tomato-proof raincoat. You know and I know it: In this sport, in this America, the Fighting Irish matter. Yeah, it's been 21 years since a national championship. So what? Notre Dame matters. They've forgotten more tradition in South Bend than the rest of us remember. They've stunk on ice, BCS-wise, ever since Lou Holtz retired. And everyone still hates them. That's a program I'd love to have at No. 9.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!-- end table -->
Pat Forde, ESPN.com: Does Ivan know that the Four Horsemen are dead? Does he know Notre Dame is 10-15 the last two years and hasn't cracked the top 50 in the Sagarin Ratings since 2006? The modern-day Irish belong in the top 15-20, but not in the top 10.

Again both guys have solid points. I find it interesting that Maisel has ND in the Top 10 and Forde mocks ND but still would place them in his Top 20, a team that "hasn't cracked the top 50 in the Sagarin Ratings since 2006". Many ND fans argue that ND shouldn't be ranked in the Top 25 for the '09 season.

I've read the article twice but still don't understand their criteria for rankings on their list.

Thats because Forde is a hater. Most programs go through down periods like Maisel pointed out. And you can make a longlist of elite programs that have struggled in the last 30 years for a period. The difference with Notre Dame is that the haters like to believe that the Irish will never return to prominence.

I was watching PTI last week with Dan Lebatard and Bob Ryan with them commenting on how the standards make it difficult to recruit and they are limited to midwest guys. This is the perception people have of Notre Dame.

I knew I hated Forde for his obvious u$c loving, and ND hating....but now I know it is deeper than that, the cock-gobbler went to Mizzou!!! He has just past Mark May, as the number one douche I would like to fight in the octagon.

No i'll just let the football team do the talking on the field. If they play to potential, that'll shut them up.

"USC has replaced Notre Dame as the glam national program"

what load of bullshit.....Last time I checked there has never been a Notre Dame regime that so blantantly disregarded the rules as USC does on a daily basis.

If being the 'glam national program' means that my coach will be TV on once a week, every week, explaining why what their doing is NOT a violation - I dont want it.

If being the 'glam national program' means that my team will adopt a 'win at all cost' attitude and recruit thugs and criminals, and operate in the 'grey area' then I dont want it.

Notre Dame is/was the 'glam national program' but they achieved that status in the right way(no thugs, did not compromise integrity, being more than just football), and they continue to do it the right way.

USC on the other hand would sell their grandmother for buck and quarter if they thought it make them win..(she had a long life anyways....)

Recent 'glam programs'
Miami - 80's
Florida State - 90's
Nebraska - 90's
USC - 2000's

Even those juggernaut Nebraska teams were famously loaded with thugs (dont make me bring up Lawrence Phillips, Christian Peters, etc...the list goes on)

If being the 'glam national program' means my team is going to associated with the above Universities - I dont want it.

I'll take Notre Dame the way they are, doing it the right way.

I want to end with a quote from Ice Cube's 'We be Clubbin":

"..and f*ck all the haters, hatin' on us...."

Hmmm. I like this post I really do BUT are you sure we did it the right way? During the Lou Holtz era he was alloted a certain number of players he could lower the standards for to get to play for Notre Dame. Dont be naive, everyone knows its true. Granted they didnt get into trouble with the law and you really couldnt call them criminals or thugs. I just cant be a naive Irish fan and say that we do everything by the book because THATS a bunch of bullshit. We do stuff in the "grey" area too. Everyone does it. But I agree with you "Fuck all the haters"!!!!!
