Notre Dame bullies UConn with new football contract – Rob Lunn - NESN.com

By Rob Lunn 7/13

Notre Dame has changed its contract with the University of Connecticut football program.

I only had one law course in college but believe I recall that it takes two parties to make a contract and two parties to change the contract.

CON wanted to play their home game in Rentschler. ND preferred Gillette for those game citing the large number of ND fans (or ND haters) that would attend. CON said no to Gillette. If ND couldn't talk CON into the nearby pro stadium how to they manage to travel with restraints over 900 miles to play in South Bend?

Rob Lunn, a former CON player, offers fodder for CON and RU fans (misery loves company) to spin their wheels because the Athletic Department negotiators at CON struck a deal he feels makes him look worse than a RU fan.

All this has exposed is that UConn is getting pushed around when it shouldn’t be.

Wait till you see how they get pushed around on Nov 21. You're going to love the exposure, Rob.

Here's an ND v CON article Lunn wrote a month earlier.

Here's an ND v CON article Lunn wrote a month earlier.

CORRECTION: Here are two articles relating to Lunn's article I assumed were written by Lunn. Both articles are on a different site which lists Dan Fitzgerald as the Publisher.

Revisiting the UConn-Notre Dame Football Series « CONNECTICUT SPORTS LAW

June '09

Although I’d love to see Notre Dame play at the Rent, the series makes perfect sense for UConn. Although the perception may be that UConn is weak for accommodating Notre Dame’s demands, the perception is irrelevant. What’s important is the reality. The reality is that UConn will receive unmatched exposure and benefits from the series.

and here's another one written about 16 months ago.

BGIF,

I don't see where those second 2 articles were written by Lunn. I see they were published by a Dan Fitzgerald, but didn't see the author's name anywhere.

As far as the contract goes, maybe UCONN would like to say they signed the contract while under duress, and there for the contract is voidable!! I'll enjoy seeing their football team under duress in November.

I agree. The first of those two articles was linked as a related article to Lunn's and it referenced the other. I didn't see a byline but the timeframe seemed to jive with the Lunn article so I assumed (making the axiom true) they were Lunn's. I've corrected the attribution in my post below. Thanks for pointing that out.

I doubt the AD was whinning as he signed the contract. It wasn't his original objective but he negotiated what he thought was the best deal for his team. Otherwise he was free to walk away - as Rutgers chose to do.

It's CON fans who feel an affront to the quality of their program. A program whose success is based largely on the exploits of a franchise TB now in the NFL.

Connecticut has been a Div 1 Football Team since 2000. Randy Edsall's done ok for a new Div 1 program going 54-53. In those 9 seasons they've had 4 winning season, 4 losing seasons, and one 6-6 year. They've won 9 games twice. That happened with Dan Orlovsky at QB 5 or 6 years ago and with TB Donald Brown in '07. The last two years behind Brown's almost 3000 yds rushing the Huskies were 17-9.

And last year they beat Syracuse by 3 TDs.

In those same 9 seasons ND was 64-46 went to a couple of BCS bowls and faced teams like USC, LSU, UM, PSU, UTN, OSU, and OR St. The past two years ND was 10-15. Unlike CON, ND didn't face a regular diet of Hofstra's, Lehigh, Liberty (Jerry Falwell's school), Murray St, Middle TN St, Colgate, Akron, Eastern Michigan, Northeastern, Eastern Washington, Florida Atlantic, Maine, Temple, Buffalo, etc.

CON's won more bowl games in that time frame beating Toledo (Motor City) and Buffalo (International) while losing to Wake Forest (Meineke).

ND was 1-4 in bowls those years beating Hawaii (Hawaii) and losing to NCS (Gator), OR St (Insight), OSU (Fiesta), and LSU (Sugar), not exactly comparable opponents.

And ND lost, at home, to Syracuse in '08. And Huskies fans have that one point to brag on - until Nov 21.

Randy Edsall Q&A: Recruiting has 'gotten out of hand' - Dave Curtis - College Football - Sporting News

7/16 CON coach Randy Edsall did an interview with Dave Curtis of The Sporting News. The Q&A covers several issues, changes to the football team, recruiting, and playing ND so I'm splitting it to fit with various discussion forums:
  • The football team Q&A appears in Connecticut After Donald Brown
  • Recruiting Q&A in the Recruiting Forum, "Edsall Takes Issue With NCAA Recruitng."
  • Playing ND Q&A appears below.
Q: You guys go to Notre Dame this year, and it looks like you'll have a series with them. Why is that so important?
A: Well, first, they're a member of the other part of the conference from the basketball situation. But when you play Notre Dame, you play on NBC, national television on a Saturday. For us, seven years old in I-A, it's one of those things where we've tried to increase our schedule each year. When people think of Notre Dame, they think of one of the top two or three most storied football programs in the country.
