Lack of discussion about the quality of kids that are getting offered

I notice that there is little to no discussion about the quality of player's the coaching staff is offering.

If a kid accepts, generally, everybody comments on how great it is, regardless of who the player is. Obviously, big prospects garner more passion, but generally speaking, it seems like nobody really has an opinion about the "downside" to a kid accepting.

Obviously, full-paid college educations are scarce, if we offer too many bad ones, I'm sure it could cripple the franchise over the long run.

i was actually thinking the same thing........some of these kids seem to be lower rated or not even rated (per rivals) and I was wondering if that's a good or bad thing. It just appears that this year alot of early offers are to lower rated kids as compared to the last 2-3 years. I may be wrong, but it "seems" that way to me. Maybe because the staff has been more generous with offers compared to previous years?

Maybe the staff sees raw talent that can be coached and fine tuned? Hell I don't know. I do notice way less USC/OSU battles for recruits this year. Maybe that will heat up as the season kicks in.

You didn't look very hard. There's a thread all of 6 posts below yours on the very subject.

There's been considerable discussion on recruiting quality offered and committed in several threads in the past week or so unfortunately most of it was stuck in individual recruit profiles which had little or nothing to do with the individual recruit.

BostonND started a thread on the topic on August 8, 2009 why don't you take this discussion to that thread as it's already been started.

For those of you freaking out because of the recruiting sites' opinion

Is this a joke? Everyone's been talking about this exact thing for the past few days, to the point that I'm sure most of us are sick of it

Exactly. Some people will complain about everything. The funny thing, the A-Holes who want to complain about everything will automatically point to the Rivals stars and say we're having a horrible recruiting class. The Kool-Aid drinkers will point to Scout, where they say WE HAVE A TOP 10 RANKED CLASS SO FAR. The sane people will look to the coaches, who have proven consistently over the last 4 years that the one thing they do know how to is scout talent and recruit, we will trust them that they know what they're doing. We, on the other hand, don't know how to scout and evaluate talent at an elite level.

Here's an example: USC signed a low 3 star yesterday, a guy named Anthony Brown. WHO???? Brown was also being recruited by such heavyweights as New Mexico and Iowa State. But see, the USC staff (who I think we can pretty much say sets the bar for recruiting) offers kids based on what they as a staff think, and not what offers the kids have or how many stars are next to their name.

And BTW, we're higher than USC on Scout's rankings...

Yes. I said YES!!!! I'm going to be positive for once. READY???? Brady Quinn and the Shark were BOTH 3 stars if I'm not mistaken. Just a little info for ya and we all know how they turned out. REP ME FOR BEING POSITIVE!

If I had mod powers I'd delete that post NDOM, just for the sake of saving your well-earned reputation. (And I believe Quinn was a 4 star, but I love the effort.)

But on that theme, here is a quick list of 3 stars that are currently in the NFL, and I'm sure there are TONS more:

Ryan Harris
Chinedum Ndukwe
John Carlson
Jeff Samardzija
Matt Ryan
Gosder Cherilus
Kenneth Darby
Simeon Castille
John Parker Wilson
Ryan Kalil
A.J. Hawk
Santonio Holmes
Mike Hart
Paul Posluszny
Jason Smith

How many of the players you listed won national titles? That's what the point is. And that's where star ratings do matter. A 3 star player may be great - a team of them is unlikely to be great.

Good call. Lots of great talent on that list for sure. Just cuz you're a "3 star" doesnt mean you cant turn into a 5 star!!!

Of course you don't WANT a team full of 3 stars. You're absolutely right. And I've always said that you take the percentages of having 4 stars and 5 stars any day over 3 stars. There is a reason why USC, OSU, LSU. FL, etc are always in the top 5. And that's because of talent.

HOWEVER, it's the people who are already decreeing this class as a failure, or a potential failure, that I don't get.

A) It's early. Relax. Trust the staff.
B) Depending on which site you read, the class so far is actually very good.
C) Everybody and their mothers knows that the top recruits that have eyes on ND are waiting to see how we perform. Why sweat it now, when everything comes down to Saturdays in the fall. Why the bitching, unless you don't know what you're talking about. Several people that are paid to scout have great things to say about many of the players in our class, and many of the players will most likely see their stars upgraded when the scouting sites do them again.
D) It's early. Relax. Trust the staff.

Oh, and we only have 5 3 stars according to scout. That hardly makes up a team.

Hey, that's my line!

BTW, does John Parker Wilson deserve to be on that list?

I do not get why people are overreacting to the three star commits. Every class has 3 star players. On top of that we don't have a class full of three star players because we have 1 5-star, 4 4-stars, and Christian Lombard who is a 4 star regardless of what Rivals thinks. Not to mention that we still have about 12-14 open spots in this class. It's not signing day yet.

Oh and don't be surprised if Badger or Utupo end up being 4 stars by signing day

A three star can be an NFL stud if they work and have good coaching. A 5 star can't miss prospect can....well...miss. It all comes down to hard work and coaching. Lately, NDs coaching and scheme has led to underacheivement of recruits.

Parental Advisory by NDOM

I'm disappointed by your use of a "parental advisory" which is totally disgusting and an affront to any true Notre Dame fan. Please try to get a grip on your obvious immaturity and post responsibly...if not at all.
