It's just not a good idea when you let a student body pick the name of the mascot. I live in Orange County, CA near the campus of UC Irvine which has the fiercest mascot ever - an ANTEATER!

LOL - my dad is an Anteater (doctorate degree form there), and one of my brothers is an Anteater (Bachelors). Needless to say it's easy fodder at reunions!

LOL there was a story about a High School that let the students pick the name and they chose The BALLAZ. The school quickly changed its mind.

Why not? The mascot could be known as Admiral Asparagus - "Spear 'em!" They could help create the Vegan 10 Conference that would include Concordia College (Moorehead, MN) whose mascot is Kernel the Cobber, an ear of corn.

Why? Swedish students at Hope Academy, another institution in Moorhead, developed a taunting cheer - in mock Norwegian -about Concordia students, playing on Concordia's location near fields of corn:
"Corncobs! Corncobs! Hva' ska' di ha? (What will they have?)
Lutefisk og lefse! (Lutefisk and Lefse) Ya! Ya! Ya!"
"Corncobs" gradually became "Corncobbers" and then "Cobbers" as Concordia students decided to embrace, rather than avoid, the term. Today, students and alumni call themselves "Cobbers."

Someone could be The Rumblin' Rutabagas. The Battling Broccoli. The Chargin' Chard. The Savage Cabbage. They could schedule games against The Carnivore Conference: The Longhorns, Buffalo, Gators, etc.

If only Holland, MI had a college. We could have "Hollandaise Smothered Asparagus" ... Yum!

[Side note from this Irish transplant to MN: Lutefisk BAD, Lefse GOOD!]

Oh, as to the "Fighting Irish" nickname --- as an alum ('74) of Irish heritage (paternal grandparents emigrated from Ireland) and a "Dove" I have an opinion.

I'm thrilled that Notre Dame, in spite of it's being founded by a French order, is known as "The Irish." Not so thrilled by the "Fighting" thing, though. I can live with it. I just wish that the commonly held image of the Irish as "fighting" was more associated with a struggle to gain deserved respect and rights from The Brits and anti-catholic groups in the US (many years ago) than that of drunks with no self-control, itching for a brawl.

Within my extensive, extended Irish family I know of no one that would qualify as a "Hooligan." None have been tossed into a "Paddy Wagon." Even when "well lubricated" the males of the clan were aggressive with words and not fists.

All that aside, I've never liked the stylized, square Leprechaun logo with fists poised. It's more a design "thing" than an attitude "thing."

Well, as a drunk with no self control and itching for a brawl, I love the logo and the nickname!

You had me with your veggie post above - that one was freakin' funny - but then lost me with the next one. Why do you take offense to "Fightin'" Irish, but not "Paddy" Wagon? Aren't both equally as demeaning to Irish Americans?

Just kidding. I am riding out the last hour of my work day and busting on a newbie seemed fun. Totally not serious.

Welcome aboard!

Too funny you are related to some Anteaters! The only thing that might be more fun for you to rip on would be if they went to South Carolina.

Is it just me, or is it funny to everyone if South Carolina were to play Oregon State? Think about it.

On that basis somebody better change the name of the Boston Celtics.

is there contraversy over the Celtics? plus a private organization can name themselves whatever the hell they want. Washington Redskins. Its different with a public institution, The Fightin Illini and Seminoles needed consent to use the tribe names. Most tribes do not have a problem with this except for offensive nicks. Oh and mascots.

Sigh.

It was your statement in a previous post in this thread I responded to, in context. You set the parameters, not me. I addressed a people that were brutally murdered and robbed of their land in Ireland, Scotland, and Wales among other places.

It was not the State of New York nor the Federal govenment nor a tribe that got the St. John's (a private institution) Redman to change their name. It was the NCAA that decided to impose sactions on its members, both public and private, banning them from using there nicknames or logos during post season play and from hosting post season championships.

You sigh as if your here to save the day again. I got the joke. I was mearly stating that the Boston Celtics are a private organization. They could call themselves the sambo's if they wanted. Yeah i know there was mass genocide in Ireland and Scotland. Next time i'll add a LOL or a haha or a smiley so you don't take things so seriously all the time.

Go Irish:
"Well, as a drunk with no self control and itching for a brawl, I love the logo and the nickname!" No problemo, amigo. Though at 5'7", 135 lbs. I learned early to control any itches I might have for a brawl.
I'm glad you got a kick out of my veggie platter. I have more, but on occasion I actually practice the not-so-Irish virtue of brevity. I thought, by enclosing "Hooligan" and "Paddy Wagon" in quotation marks I'd effectively lumped them in with "Fighting" Irish. My bad. Sometimes clarity loses out to the affects of a pint or two (or three or four or ... ). "Shenanigans" is another example. It comes dangerously close to my last name (think coach: Denver Broncos) but is fitting for me, so I let it slide.
Someone, years ago when I was at ND and Ara was the coach, wondered how a team from a school founded by Frenchmen, consisting of players of Polish heritage and coached by an Armenian would be known as The Irish. Maybe we should be the Fighting Frogs (Grenouilles de Guerre?).
Two home made jokes just to show that I can roll with the punches when it comes to Irish stereotypes:
Why are there so many Irish lawyers? What self-respecting Irishman could pass up the chance to get PAID to talk and argue???
Why are there so many Irish law school graduates NOT practicing law? It's tough for an Irishman to pass ANY bar!

Shalom

So many jokes and not enough bytes ... oh, shyte. I'm not one who remembers a large repertoire of jokes. There's one I heard many years ago that involved, as the set up, Seamus who; when asked to pay his tab at the local pub, claims he'd forgotten to fill his pockets with punts and had also forgotten his wallet and his cheque book. When the barkeep suggests that he borrow a bit from Eamonn sitting four stools over, Seamus says "Never ... that bloody bastard stole me bicycle 17 years ago!" The punch line? "The only thing an Irishman never forgets is a grudge."
I'm not a football wonk but an ND alum and Irishter with (big surprise!) stories to tell. I won't bother with v-bucks and team logos, etc., but will kick in occasionally and field the inevitable slings and arrows as though I were a 6'8", fleet-of-foot WR; not the 5'6", sedentary Guinness guzzler that I am.
