It is a nice rant and Meyer should do something about the arrests; but it sounds like the writer got cut from his jr.hi. team and hates football or sports. With that being said I agree with him. Nice job urban

... Florida's administration can't stop it. The recession is killing endowments and donations everywhere, but the University of Florida continues to roll along toward its $1.5 billion fundraising campaign, Florida Tomorrow -- in large part, no doubt, because of alumni pride over those national championships. Hey, I didn't make this ridiculous world. I just live here. But Meyer is the Gators' Golden Goose, and Florida isn't about to tell him how to run his program.
So it's up to Meyer to stop this stuff now. ...

...

Let these players, these stupid kids, know they're not untouchable. They're not gods. They're representatives of the University of Florida, representing more than every book and building on that campus. They're representing every Florida student, past and present.

They're representatives of the University but the Administration can't stop it, Meyer has to.

There's the problem. It's not the Coaches job to be the Dean of Students. They are students first. Discipline them as students, not as jocks. Ground them, suspend them, expel them - as students. Their scholarship/student activities (football) follow that chain of command. They don't suit up if they aren't students in good standing.

Board of Trustees/President/Dean have all played Pontius Pilate and washed their hands. "It's not my job!" It is there job. The University President can stop the problem today - if he wants to.

Always was told I was a citizen and a representative of my College first. Football was a privledge, not a right, and I was an athlete second. Plus, I was afraid of running like a gosh damn zebra for screwing up.

College is not for everybody, they already admit the kids who are supposed to be the best and the smartest of their classes. Football is for even fewer people. The phrase STUDENT ATHLETE isn't athletic student for a reason.

When high school graduates go to college to play ball and be in the lime light they are taking on the responsibility to be good citizens, students, and athletes. In that order. As young adults, they should be capable of understanding that commitment, and help held accountable to that.

It's sad to see that people have vaulted college football so high that nobody really cares HOW you win a NC. All that matters is that you win one, or two. Nobody cares that you won the NC with any type of class, respect, or integrity.

The college coach, like a father, is responsible for his players. Whether they are adults or not it is his house, his program. And it is his responsibility to enforce his rules. If they are lax, then you get lax players who get in trouble and arrested.

It is Urbans place to enforce rules that make his football team act like smart students first and atheletes second.

That's part of why we like ND, we do it, and we do it right.

It's one thing to come from an outsider and ripping Urban, but it means a helluva lot more coming from a Florida alum. I'm glad someone spoke up. Interesting read.

Gator damnation: Stays in jails show Urban's way fails - CBSSports.com News, Fantasy, Video

urban meyer has collected 2 national championship trophies, and so there is always going to be someone that feels the need to go witch hunting.......meyer is loved in gainesville and that is all that matters! IMHO

I'm not trying to defend Meyer, the College Presidents, or even the NCAA, but it all starts in High School. Until the High Schools start holding kids accountable for their behavior, few colleges are going to. These kids don't develop a sense of entitlement at College. It starts in High School, and maybe even before that.

I think this speaks to a larger issue of people, in general, abdicating their responsibilities to teach kids right from wrong. My brother and I were talking about my niece recently. He told me he was dreading the day that she started to be exposed to marijuana and booze. He told me that he couldn't very well tell her she couldn't do them, because that would hypocritical, considering his experimentation with them. I told him that was BS. His job is teach her right from wrong, not hold her responsible for only what he didn't do at her age. I hate it when I hear my friends say, "The only difference between my kids and me is I didn't get caught." That might be true, but it doesn't do anything to help the kids learn right from wrong.

*steps off of the soapbox*
