DANA POINT, Calif. -- The open quarterback competition between Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn officially has begun, Browns coach Eric Mangini said at the NFL owners meetings this morning.

While the prospect of trading one still exists, Mangini said he met with both quarterbacks prior to coming here and explained they will have an open competition for the starting job in 2009.

"I talked to both of them about that and was very clear," Mangini said. "I said if they have any questions they can come and see me. In terms of the competition and their opportunities. That's what I told them. They understand that."

Mangini said after reviewing tapes of both players, holding conversations with them and talking to others, he is "excited" about the prospect of having both compete for the job.

"Without knowing exactly what they were being asked to do on each of the plays, I thought both seemed to have a good presence, a good command of the situation. They each do different things in the passing game and running game that I like," he said.

Mangini said he will determine later how to divide QB repetitions in offseason practices, the minicamps and then in training camp. He said with the Jets he alternated QBs by the practice period, by the day, even by the interception. He said there is merit in mixing up the opportunities.

The coach said there is no timetable in determining his starter.

As usual, Mangini didn't rule out trading a quarterback before the competition actually plays out on the field.

"What I haven't ruled out is George (Kokinis, GM) and I looking at any opportunity to improve the team," he said. "But I in no way am saying that is specific to the quarterback situation. But we would look at any opportunity we thought would improve the team."

If Anderson starts, Browns fans are going to riot. They're in love with Brady.

Thats because most of us can see that Brady is the better QB. I think it will show during the competition.

I am a big time Brady Quinn, fan. I had no problem with the Browns starting Anderson last year with the year he had in 2007. I still felt that Quinn was better. But considered having him go in and possibly be injured for a team that was obviosly not going anywhere was a losing proposition. Plus, I think sitting on the bench and learning can be a good thing for a year or two. Look at Steve Young, (at SF) Joe Thiesman (at Wash) Roger Staubach & Joe Montana, Yes there have been some that started right off, and even though they became quite good they actually stunk up the field for a a year or two. Terry Bradshaw, Archie Manning & John Elway. There have been very few that came in thier first year and were great from the start. Dan Marino, Peyton Manning (although he threw a lot of pics that first year) and Maybe Drew Bledsoe. Now that it has been two years I hope the Browns start Quinn, if not I hope they trade him to somewhere he can start. If they trade him I hope they do so in time enough for him to learn a new system and be effective.

The Browns are a total joke! They hired the worst possible available coach and GM. Who totally dismantle a team that was one win away from the playoffs 2 years ago and bring in a bunch of Jets reserves to start. Now they restart the biggest QB controversy in the NFL again! I am a huge browns fan and go to a lot of games every year but for Quinn's sake I hope he is the one that gets traded. We are going nowhere fast!

Even if Quinn doesnt make the starting spot this year (I'm kinda thinking he will) I dont see it as being too bad. So he sits another year on the bench. You know he is going to be prepared, you know he has adequate skills to start in the NFL, and at this point has more potential than D Anderson. Having a new QB sit 2-4 years is not a bad thing, I cant remember too many QB's coming in and making a splash right out of college. Look at the flip side, he could be matt leinart, his NFL career pretty much already done before it started. (a re-ocurring theme amongst the majority of 'SC players since the late 90's)

Brady may still be traded and a Columnist who writes for cleveland.com's sports section says
...the way this is playing out I'd not only be shocked if he were the starting quarterback here this year but I'd be surprised if he made it to training camp.

I think it stinks that he really hasn't had a shot at being the starter. Too bad for Cleveland as I think Brady Quinn could have done great things for them.

Yeah it was an interesting read. I'm getting really confused about all of this. There are so many rumors. The Browns have already reportedly turned down multiple picks (including 1st rounders) for Brady. I really don't think they will cuz then thats another whole that the Browns need to fill, and I don't see Dirty Sandcez (sp) being better than Brady. But right now I don't really know what the Browns are thinking.
