Guys and gals,

I beg everyone's forgiveness if this question has already come up for discussion.........

I have thought about this for some time now....... I am wondering what you people will say.

Who is the greatest qb ever @ ND?

Leave out stats and wins and losses....... in your personal opinion, who is the qb that blew your mind the most.

If you talking about the greatest I've SEEN - well, my top 3 are Theisman, Quinn and a guy lots of people forget - Steve Beuerlein. Maybe the wins weren't there for Steve, but he could really chuck it.

If you are talking about my favorites to watch - I loved watching Rick Mirer play.

My pop swears Hornung and Lamonica are in the discussion of all time greats.

well, your pop is correct...... Lamonica wasn't dubbed the mad bomber for nothing and Vince Lombardi referred to Hornung as the greatest clutch player he had ever seen.

My childhood friend's father played 2nd string behind Hornung and he said the man was the 8th wonder of the world.

I grew up watching Blair Keil punt and pass the football.... he is much like Beurlein, the wins weren't aboundant..... but boy could those two throw the ball.

Gotta say Mirer or Rice that I have seen personally. I "hear" about another one though that was a man among boys.

Bowl wins aside, I vote for Quinn. He did more with less help than anyone. 69 TDs and 14 Ints his last 2 years, all with a mediocre defense and a very average OL.

Good point.

I also like Hawaiian Irish's list.

Wow! I am flat out shocked. Montana only listed once. Maybe you don't put him #1 but if you list a top 5, come on.

When I was a kid my dad would talk about when Montana was in the game you just knew he had control and the Irish were going to win. IMO he is #1 for sure.

That being said, in two years ask me again and I think I may be able to say JC. Funny how his initials are almost biblical.

Montana didn't really sprout until he got to the NFL. Big game against Houston but he really took off after his days at ND. Lamonica was mentioned on the first page.

I put T. Rice at the top of the list because of his excitement to watch. I have always been a big fan of the option. My top 5: (my lifetime) 70's - pres

1. T Rice
2. Joe Montana
3. Brady Quinn
4. Rick Mirer
5. Tom Clements

ask me again this time next year and hopefully JC will be in there somewhere!!!

If you are asking about the best in history, I would have to say that winning a NC is a prerequisite. People can pile stats etc., but to be the best you have to win. For instance, who do you take: Roethelisberger or Marino? Just my opinion, but I like rings. So I wouldn't put Brady Quinn on there. Since ND has 11 NC's, you can populate the list with QBs that won a NC and were good to boot: Lujack, Rice, Clements... For all around though, without the titles, I would say Hornung. I know there are greats who never won a title and there is a lot that has to work to win, but I also think there are great QBs who know how to win even if they aren't stat monsters or throw the best ball. I do think the game is vastly different today, with more passing etc. Plus you have television coverage up the wazoo, and that helps.

Thats a flawed way of looking at it. Championships are team accomplishments. No QB has ever won a NC, SuperBowl, whatever without a solid supporting cast. Never. And, I would take Marino every day (and twice on Sundays) over Roethlisberger. In fact, I would take probably 50 other QB's before I'd take Ben.

Interesting question...Even though I was born in '86, I still remember my dad telling me how great Montana was. How he didn't have the greatest tools but was a great leader and that is the most imperative skill you can have as a QB. Anyways...BQ was impressive like my buddy Junkhead said...He did so much with a mediocre OL and D. He had the will to win. I always liked Powlus too. Thought he got a bad break. Wish I was around 2 see Theisman play...

Well, you can have fun remembering all those sweet hookups between Marino and Duper. While others can remember actually winning Super Bowls. I understand that it is a team effort, that's what I said. However, looking at championship teams, it is rare to find ones that have average QBs. Even ones who are not great passers etc. have leadership ability. Big Ben leading Pittsburgh for the final touchdown to win the game. That's leadership ability. That's the stuff that is not recorded in the stats. Tebow has that, plus the stats. There's a reason QB is the toughest position on the team. Marino is one of the greatest QBs ever. No doubt. But the proof is in the pudding. The point is winning championships, not getting passing records. While not winning the SB is not all on the shoulders of Marino, there is no doubt that winning the SB twice is partially on the shoulders of Roethelisberger. How many SB will Big Ben have to win before you would take him over Marino? Look at the list of SB champions. There are maybe a few average QBs in there. College is obviously a different game. But out of NDs 11 titles, I would definitely take a guy like Rice over Quinn, as an example.

People will look at this differently. Some will look at stats and passing ability etc. I think the position is bigger than that.

Put Marino in his prime, hell put Marino at any point in his career with the 2 teams Big Ben had and you will get the same result. Also do you remember how terrible Ben played in the first superbowl, yeah they won but it had nothing to do with him.

I may not be answering the question. The Best in School History may be the best pure QB. Fine. The question I may be answering is "What QB do you want with 2 minutes to go, down 3 in the championship?" There are a lot of guys I'd take over Marino in that situation. If I was picking a fantasy team, I'd take Marino. I bet Marino would give up every record and stat for a ring. So would Dolphin fans.

Well the Steelers got to the Super Bowl with much help from Ben the first time. If they won in spite of him, how many playoff losses came with the help of Marino? By the way, the 2007 Patriots are the greatest team of all time.*

*To go along with the stat thinking.

WaveDomer if you put it like that than I would definately take "The Come Back Kid"
Joe Montana as he done it at both levels and in the biggest games. To me there is no other choice.

As far as ND QB's Tony Rice and Brady Quinn and the first game I ever saw live was against Purdont and that was one of Joe's comebacks. So not only was I overwhelmed with the excitement of being there I also got to see a little bit of the Luck of the Irish.
