Will we? Maybe. Should we? Depends. The answers are both dependent on if/when we can get back to our year in/out domination of non-powerhouse football teams. We can still lose to USC, MI, and the other powerhouse football teams and be okay (as far as contention for a NC goes, not that I, or we as fans/alumns will be okay losing to them) as long as we dominate everyone else. If we can not reach that plateau again then we will and should join a conference.

If I were a betting man... I would say we would join the Big Ten IF we ever joined a conference.

I dont know if we will but I hope we dont in my lifetime because I popped off to some Vol fans about how we dont need no stinking conference. We got a tv contract and a BCS clause for petes sake. What else do we need?

If we do join a conference it should be the Big East. All sports all ready are anyway. Will we join a conference? NO!

I hope the Irish stay as a independant. As long as NBC is willing to keep forking out the bucks, I say stay free.

SHOULD we; no absolutely not.

WILL we? The next 6 - 8 years are crucial. If we aren't back in NC title contention on a semi regular basis by the time Obama is out of office, the economy may force the administrations hand. IMHO, even if the NBC contract fell through, ESPN, Tuner, hell even WGN (they are trying to be a National network) would pony up more money than if we were splitting TV revenues with 11 other teams. But that may not be enough.

If it happened, and it was the Big 10, I could live with it, but it would suck majorly.

If it was the Big East or ACC or some other bullshit conference, I would be extremely pissed.

I guess I am resigned to seeing it happen in my lifetime, but like a plague, I'm dreading its coming.

no need to join a conference in football(and share all that bowl money???? That is when we get back to winning bowls). But if they did join a conference I think it should be the Big Ten. They should follow the same thing that Penn State did. ND plays Big Ten teams more than any other conference teams already anyways. (mich, mich st., ohio st, purdue, penn state)

NO, NEVER, NO HOW, Its our legacy to be independent, wins are coming, and if NBC falls apart believe me someone else will want the IRISH, NO, NEVER, NO HOW. Stay National and remember this, in 1979 I went to the USC game, while driving across Indiana on the turnpike I was passed by South Carolina plates that said " Beat SC ", and they didnt mean South Carolina. Where else could that happen but at Notre Dame?

we should never join a conference. why?

1) we can schedule whoever we want wherever we want.
2) we can keep our money for ourselves. what conference deserves the money notre dame could bring in? can you imagine the fight for us?
3) we are the only school prestigious enough to not need a conference and still do how we do.
4) tv contracts. i like seeing the irish EVERY SATURDAY on national TV. no bullcrap online streaming or anything.
5) we wont get left out of the BCS because two other teams made it ahead of us.
6) because EVERYONE WANTS US TO!!
7) we are ND

Notre Dame should remain independent as long as it financially wise to do so. We have already agreed to take a drastic cut in bowl revenue. In this current economic time, I think it would be wise to keep options open. The only way it will ever happen is if NBC discontinues the contract. If that were to ever happen it would only begin to get the ball rolling. Big ten is with ABC/ESPN/BTN. Big East is exclusively ESPN I believe.

Every conference would welcome Notre Dame with open arms. The biggest money maker in college football. Hell even bullshit conference's with geograpically restrictions would make an exeception for the Irish.

I pray and hope Notre Dame Football remains independant.
What other college football team can say that they are AMERICAS team.

Love them or hate them Notre Dame is college football..

WE ARE NOTRE DAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good point, no one ever talks about how we did try in the late 1890s and early 1900s. We tried to join the Big Ten 3 different times and were denied all 3 times. Screw the Big Ten!

I agree that ND shouldn't join a conference, but you are fooling yourselves if you think we are as prestigious as we were back in the day. Will ND get back there? Jury is out. Coming off 3-9 and 6-6 campaigns and 15 years of mediocrity is nothing to be proud of.

I think we're all kind of missing the point here. Should we join a conference, no. Our Independence is what makes us unique and who we are.

However...our bowl tie ins are beginning to shrink. Specifically the mid-major bowls, but also the clauses in our BCS tie-ins are starting to get "re-worked". More and more BCS bowls are looking to conference tie-ins, and I'm afraid if we don't join a conference we'll be squeezed out.

That being said, the Big Ten does make sense. First for locality reasons, but second we do play a bunch of them each year. Plus, bringing in ND would give the conference 12 teams, allowing them to play an additional game each year to determine the conference champ (i.e. $$$$$$$$$). This does, however, water down the rivalries, specifically UM/OSU.

Look, in the end if we join the Big10 we will still get our games against whoever we want, IE USC etc. I am sure they would make provisions as to our NBC contract etc. I hope we don't, but the Big10 would be the natural fit.

Could you say to alumni or recruits we will play in your region yearly? Are there any benefits that outweigh the loss of independence and identity? 75% of alumni are against it. We would keep a few of our traditional rivals and end up with the toughest non-conference schedule any conference we join. An outsider usually suggests it - a Kevin White idea. I'd prefer total independence and drop the restrictive BCS. We negotiate separate contracts with the bowls, which would be more lucrative and less punitive.

the administration is trying to play more big east teams in the future and actually has a contract to start playing 3 a year (i think) pretty soon. i sure hope this isnt a sign that the program is thinking about using the big east as a backup for if we ever need to join a conference. of course i believe the big east has also said that they would drop basketball if we joined another conference (someone correct me if thats wrong). if we ever did, which we shouldnt and i sure hope we dont, i would pray its the big ten. big east is treated like the runt of the bcs conferences.

By all listings in ESPN, CBS-Sports, Newspapers, CNN, USSR,.... we are in a conference. We are listed in the Independents conference. Why do we need to join a conference when we are in one already? :wink::whoknows:

Notre Dame's "conference" of long-standing rivalries:
Navy- 82 yrs -- Has only played Army longer;
USC- 80 yrs -- Has only played Cal and Stanford longer;
Purdue - 80 yrs -- Has only played Indiana longer;
Michigan State - 72 yrs -- Has only played Michigan longer;
Pittsburgh - 64 yrs - Has only played Penn St longer.

Join the Big Ten and convert two of those to conference, but unless the Big Ten gets divided into Divisions, ND could add Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and Wisconsin. Do you think the Big Ten wants a strong ND? Are they ready to see ND go to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl?

This year the Irish play 4 Pac 10 teams (one in San Antonio), 3 Big Ten teams, 2 Big East teams, 1 ACC (BC), Navy and Nevada.
