From what I read, Turk never took a visit to South Bend..... Found that to be pretty interesting....

I imagine they will have him visit the campus before NSD. One of the things the staff tries to do is allow each class to get to know each other by visiting during games or other events.

Anyone else wonder why this kid is stickied here? Don't you think he'd like to join his future teammates?

Okay, here are some stats on our boy, in case your interested in the numbers (and last time I checked we aren't recruiting for personalities):
1st, he does not do the kicking. They have another kid name Palardy who does that. Here is game by game-
Game 1 - 4-162 40.5 avg 56 long 0 inside 20
Game 2 - 1-30 30 30 long 1 in20
Game 3 - 2-72 36.0 avg 45 long 1 in20
Game 4 - 2-72 36.0 avg 43 long 1 in20
Game 5 0-0
Game 6 - 2-84 42.0 avg 44 long 1 in20
Game 7 - 3-119 39.7 avg 42 long 2 in20
Game 8 - 3-109 36.3 avg 45 long 0 in20
Game 9 - 0-0
Game 10 - 3-122 40.7 avg 45 long 1 in20
Game 11 - 6-234 39.0 avg 50 long 1 in20
Game 12 - 2-46 23.0 avg 28 long 0 in20
Game 13 - 2-79 39.5 avg 40 long 0 in20
Game 14 - 5-209 41.8 avg 46 long 2 in20
Game 15 - 3-126 42.0 avg 46 long 0 in20

I think the Phamaster started this thread in the wrong forum so when it got sticked, it stickied in here instead of the 09 profiles forum.

We'll cut him some slack, he's a newbie.

I just read that Ben Turk is 6'0", 190 pounds, and bench presses 375 lbs. That is very impressive...I am 6'1" & 215 and bench 365 so it is really motivating me that a punter can bench more then me and weighs 25 pounds less. Maybe he should be our new Strength & Conditioning coach.

Rumor has it Omar Hunter wanted to transfer to ND to be our next punter, but CW put the cabash on that and picked up Ben Turk instead.

Mendoza will work hard to take that bench number down a bit over the next few years.

You just had to get in a Mendoza shot in there didn't you??? LOL

GoIrish, I know you've wanted him fired for a long time now, but for the first time, I'm hearing good things about the works he's doing. The guys are all bigger, some of them significantly so, and many guys are in much better shape as far as muscle vs. fat. Let's hope that it's true and not ND colored glasses!

You're right. I know I take my shots at Mendoza every chance I get.

However, on a very serious note, when a freshman comes in, at any position let alone a freshman kicker, I think it is a problem to have them putting up better numbers than many of your linemen that have been a part of your college weight program for two or three years. If any freshman is out benching veteran linemen, it is a problem. I didn't even like it when Brady Quinn was out lifting guys on our OL.

The reps at 225 I can handle, to a degree. But the overall max bench number? C'mon. As strong as the kid is, our "veteran" linemen should not be letting a frosh out-bench them.

Just stop there for a second...

Some linemen have trouble benching. Reason? Long freaking arms. The bigger one's arms, the harder it is to push up a ton of iron. Kids will smaller arms and compact frames are able to pound weight because they have perfect bodies for the task.

In my opinion, the bench press is not an ideal chart of football ability. How many times on the field with you be on your back, pushing someone up... (only when you get your ass kicked). You want to see a lineman's strength, watch him do a ground-based hammer jammer.

They might have longer arms but they have bigger chests too. Less distance to travel.

My point wasn't about the importance of the bench press to football abilities. My point was that a freshman - any freshman - should not be coming in and out lifting veteran linemen on any power lift. Bench press, military press, squats, clean & jerk, or any other significant power lifts. Just shouldn't happen. Maybe he could come in and put up comparable numbers to some of the big uglies, but such a great disparity across the board is worrisome in my opinion.

I have said for a very long time that Mendoza should have been gone with Latina. Our linemen routinely have been pushed around by d-lines for three years now. From what I see on TV, it just looks like our offensive linemen get pushed around and cannot compete strength-wise with other elite teams. I have said Mendoza deserves a good deal of responsibility for our offensive line woes the last few years and this freshman is another example, in my opinion.

Kelly when asked if he wouldn't mind having a regular student help with punts answered, "Heck yeah."
