Let me tell you gentleman a little story that will make you feel better about this whole subject of the guys being excited to go to Hawaii.
In the late '50's and early to mid '60's one of the best recievers in the NFL was Green Bay Packers WR Max Meghee. He was a memeber of all of the Championship teams and was a huge part of the offense. He and Paul Hornung were very close friends and even lived together for a time. As most of us know Hornung was a bit of a party animal so when the two of them got together drinking and late nights soon followed. Both of them always preformed on the field, despite thier countless sleepless nights.
In the season of '67 the New Orleans Saints became an expansion francise and every team has to allow certain players to be unprotected from the expansion draft. Hornung was one of these players left unprotected because Lombardi assumed they would not want him because by this time he was older and not as effective. They took him and before he ever played a game he retired from the NFL.
During the '67 season Meghee was a part of the team, however, he was the third string wr by this point because age and injuries had slowed him down. Most of the year he oppserved from the sidelines as Boyde Dowler became an All-Pro WR. That year the Packers won the NFL Championship and were sloted to play the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl II in L.A.. What is it we all know about California, there is lots of booze and good looking woman.
Hornung flew out to L.A. to hang out with his friends and former teamates and cheer them on. The night before the game Meghee and Hornung went out on the town and drank and caused trouble all night long. Meghee was entering the hotel in the morning hours and Bart Starr, Packers QB and leader was in the hallway just fetching his Morning coffee. He says,"Max, your up pretty early." Meghee responded,"Well, actually on my way to bed now." Starr shook his head and smiled saying,"You and Paul will always be kids. Get some rest you never know when Lombardi will put you in there."
Later that afternoon Dowler went down on the first play of the game. Soon after so did the #2(don't know who), so with the game still up for grabs in the first quarter with no points for either side Lombardi called on his trusty Meghee. Max forgot to bring his helmet because he was still not thinking straight from the hang-over. He found one and entered the game bad headache and ailling body and lead the team with 142 yards recieving and 2 touchdowns. He was by all accounts, except the people handing out the award, the games MVP.(The award officially went to Bart Starr, who gave it to Meghee in the locker room, saying he was the real MVP)
This story was meant to show you all these guys are competitors and they will show up to play no matter where they are or what they did in the days leading up to the game........
