If they didn't give him a shot at starting, why even go to ND?

Well I am sure he will, since Charlie has always stated the best will play. I would say Jimmy would have the edge at the moment. Atleast Crist will get in if things go south, unlike this year.

The way I see it, every man has a fair chance. Like Junkhead said, why would he go to ND if he didn't plan to challenge for the starting spot? I hope they can help make each other better. Go Irish!

Why did he not play any this year?

Why would you want to waste a possible red shirt. I know ND doesn't use that term but that's basically the point. Jimmy will have his 4 years under center. After Jimmy leaves, Dayne Crist will have two years of eligibility.

Dane will be given some snaps during spring, but he's not real competition for the starting job. That's the one thing I don't like, is that there is no competition (this next year) at that position. That needs to change. Players need to be pushed, and JC is the one guy who isn't.

agree...and add...with an o-line that bad, you are asking for bad habbits, blown confidence, injuries, and likely less offense (is that possible?)...Just watch Jimmy when he feels heat, or gets popped...he starts locking on, overthrowing, dancing...all residue from getting sacked in '07 more than idaho potatos. I think CW had no real choice last year but to throw Clausen to the Wolves...and now he has a reclamation project on his hands. This year, by playing Crist, he'd be torching a kid with some talent, when he actually could choose not to ...deep breath...CW did the right thing there.....

I like your analysis. Made me laugh and is spot on. Props to you.

Dayne is also a pretty good runner. I wouldn't say Tebow-ish, but kind of a poor man's version. That's the one thing that gets JC in trouble. He is no threat to run and teams know that. It would be nice to have a rigid-framed QB, who could make all the throws and use his feet when needed.

Ask Ohio State about that. Boeckman is a scarecrow and Pryor could move.

Now I don't know anything about this Crist guy, but I do know what I have seen from JC from the games I have seen. And, so far, it's not good. Flashes of some good, but nothing consistent enough to get real excited about. When he throws an INT, you know another's coming, his confidence is next to nothing after a mistake, which he needs a short memory because mistakes are going to happen.

Competition would be a healthy thing for the Irish QB situation, you push JC and you get the other guy meaningful reps with the first team, if you've got to replace JC (injury or performance)with the young guy then I think you'd feel much more confident having given him some meaningful reps with first squad each week.

Give JC a consistent line, you will see consistent play.

JC will be fine assuming he has a line aka the first half of the season.

Crist should get some snaps in mop up time/ maybe a series or two as change of pace and to get him a little experience

But Crist coming out and saying he didnt know the playbook and was frustrated by it during the season is why he didnt play. But he is honest at least. Weis also said there is a bigger gap between Crist and Sharpley than Sharpley and Clausen.

If JC is already the QB for next year then there is a REAL REAL problem... EVERY position should be up for grabs for next year once the season ends....

I hope Cw does let them battle it out next year and then start the best player. JC din't progress like a QB should so If Crist is better next year then start him

It's true. I heard that the football team is hosting the second annual "ND Football Beer Pong Challenge". Jimmy is the defending champion and Dayne wants a shot at the title.
Crist was quoted as saying "We've all seen the pictures and know that Jimmy can throw down some pitchers." Crist continued "That being said, I'm not one bit afraid of him."

Jimmy Clausen did not return our calls but a rep, speaking from the College Beer Pong Hall of Fame, said "Jimmy will take on all comers without fear. He guaranteed four championships when he got here. The beer pong table is where he'll back up those boasts. Legends are born at the beer pong table and Jimmy is well on his way to that status."

that explains why jimmy stares down his recievers (concentration on the cup) and he throws to the teams in red (the color of the cup) haha, and i think he might play a few games saturday morning..before he takes the field. Im sorry I took that a little to far, but i cant wait for this position battle come spring, for some reason ive believed since we signed him that Crist would be the man, i mean hes only missing one letter for Christ's sake lol. Headlines " Missing the H but bringing the W" i mean who doesn't want to see that and Jimmy can be JC (just chilling) on the sideline. Ok sorry for my lack of information filled post but anyway, Crist has the better size and better speed, and from the performance of our man James i bet hes not far off on accuracy and reads. I just want to see a competition, if JC gets the start i want it to be solely performance based so i know the best man is playing, even if it is terrible Clausen.. No job is safe all spots are open, let the battle begin!

You guys do remember that BQ wasn't really that great until his junior year right? I agree, open that battle up but I would be surprised if Jimmy doesn't get a lot better in the off-season. He should be working his ass off to get better.

Yeah, who was pushing Brady? How many D-1 QB's are 'pushed' by their backups? Don't know that I follow that logic. If Jimmy is to be an ND great, then he will need to push himself, as all great QB's do.

Thats exactly right, the only program in the country that has stud qb after stud qb pushing each other is unfortunatley USC...I hate saying it, but its true.

My thoughts exactly bro..reps...Anyways, I feel the same way. I love JC as my name indicates!! but he just doesn't have that other dimension to him...Dayne can pass and run! I think he ran for like 1,000 yards his senior year and passed for like 2,000. This kid is a poor man's Tebow running wise with a better arm...he should def get some consideration to start yet I say we stay with JC until he absolutely blows up..Its his team, he has the talent, he has the experience, there is no other excuses...If JC lays an egg early I hope CW won't hesitate using Dayne who already absorbed this offense for a whole year(something JC was unable to do)...and light a fire under this team.

I hope Crist wins the start. I didn't have much confidence in Clausen even before those ints in the endzone against BC.
At the last in the Syracuse game, Clausen had time and an open receiver crossing the field and he missed him.
I don't want to sound disloyal but I think it is a "get real" situation for the offense.
ok, I'm gonna post. This will be my first and last negative comment.

I don't see it happening even though it should

I don't see it happening even though it should

CW isn't going to put his career to chance in a QB that never took a snap in college as in comparison to a two year starter even though the guy makes terrible decisons with the ball four turnovers by the QB back man Four!

Quarterback Competition - South Bend Edition

Clausen and Crist sit on the bench.
Clausen gets up, Crist gets up.
Clausen sits back down.

That'd be my competition right there. Oh, well, that and Clausen spending time in the film room watching how not to turn the ball over and be a cocky douche bag. But, believe me, Clausen will be the QB next season. Weis has pinned his career at ND on Clausen so Crist starting as a freshman is completely out of the question...especially in a make or break year for Charlie.

yeah, but i also remember that bq actually improved game in and game out, where jc has regressed. so i hope that c'dub opens the competition up and let the best qb win. with that being said, maybe it will push the best of jc to come out, if not.....let's go dc!!!

everyone keeps talking about a regression and i dont get what stats you are looking at to back up this claim. Just take a look here:
ESPN - Jimmy Clausen Stats, News, Photos - Notre Dame Fighting Irish - NCAA College Football

He improved in just about every stat category. Compare him even to other QB's in the country. The only number that sucks is INT's which will decrease with experience of learning how to read defenses. Clausen is a perfectionist, he was undefeated his whole life before he came here, i doubt these loses sit well with him either. Once he forgets these loses and gets his head straight(a month of practice before a bowl is nice) im sure he will rebound and be great as expected. Watch for him to work his ass off this off season too and prove all the Classen haters wrong next year.. BCS look out for the irish!!
