I heard on ESPN this morning, but I can't remember who was talking but he said that JC is one of the best QB's in the country throwing the deep pass............

When it's there he throws one of the most accurate deep balls I have seen in a while. Awful playcalling, no running game, and no protection mixed with some bad decisions by Jimmy caused us to see very little of that in the 2nd part of the year. I'm not giving up on the kid yet. He isn't underperforming because he lacks the talent, he is underperforming because he is still behind making decisions and such. I can imagine the talk about Quinn after his sophomore year was similar to this.

Jimmy has talent, although his arm strength is still not as good as it needs to be. The problem is his leadership, which is basically non-existent. He plays fine, but as soon as he faces adversity he goes to pieces.

There were plenty of times this year where I expected Clausen to take control and define himself as our QB (such as late against NC, overtime vs. Pitt) where he laid an egg. And he just played flat out scared against SC, and Michigan State. He doesn't deal with pressure well. I think he will get better with experience and maturity, but I don't know if he will ever be quite the QB we need.

I think clausen has all the tools cept maybe size to be a flat out stud. All he needs to do is turn his head 30 degrees once he steps back into the pocket. He is not playing madden he cant lock on to a reciever pre play and rely on his arm like he did in HS.

This thread, like every other one by the MidwestTroll...sucks bucknuts. Mods...it's time for change we can believe in.
I'm calling for not only an end to this thread, but a year long ban so we don't have to see this garbage till end of next year.

Defend that...

Agreed. He just likes to stir things up around here without a point or substance at all...Go to the rivals mainboard, they'll love you there.

Actually, I'm playing NCAA Football '09 on PS3 right now and in my dynasty, Clasuen sucks too. Sure, some of it is my playing, but it's funny how art imitates life. There's some of the holding the ball too long, poor throws, interceptions. Next season, I'm benching him and starting Dayne Crist (who I redshirted). Clausen can transfer to Eastern Michigan or something...I don't care.

He does throw a nice deep ball doesn't he? Hooray for optimism! Hooray beer! Wait, we're not in Jamaica, so we have to be somewhat realistic. As much as I like to look at the positive things Jimmy did the first half of this year, in our 1-4 finale to the season he was brutal. I think he could come out and have a great season next year, but its all about vision and decision making for Jimmy. We know he can slang the ball all over the field, he throws bullets too. While it is a glorious sight to see him loft up a juicy TD pass to Golden Tate with a corner and safety left in the dust, he still needs to learn there are times that he shouldn't gun it downfield. Should be interesting to see how he improves in these areas because I don't have much faith in the coaching of QB coach Ron "I used to be great at ND but got washed out and am going through a midlife crisis and am eating my feelings" Powlus. It would be nice to see Charlie have an impact on Clausen like he had an impact on Brady Quinn. But, CW is "head coach" now, not "just offense." A good thing to keep in mind to get your hopes up for next season is to look at last offseason. Jimmy worked his tail off to get bigger and more physical. He not only had a much improved arm this season, but had a better physique and was much more mobile. Assuming that he works his tail off again this offseason, working on reading defenses and making good decisions, then he shall prosper next season.

haha...I threw more picks than tds with him in that game as a soph. But eventually I broke a bunch of records with him and won the Heisman. Which hopefully what will happen in reality too. lol That game is a good escape from the horrors of this season though thats for sure.

ND is a relevant school, just watch ESPN, and ND will always be relevant. I want to remind all the Crist lovers that he only played 2 years in high school!!! What I don't get is that people think he is our savior, you really think he could be our savior w/ awful playcalling, no running game, and no protection?? I don't and I don't think any QB could be in those situations. When Clausen is on he can throw a deep ball and is one of the best. So he needs to work on some things to be a better QB. You don't think that Quinn had to work to get better, there is no perfect player out there; they are human just like you and I and will make mistakes. As far as for dipping into our playbook, that is up to Weis; he is the one who calls the plays. I am not giving up on Clausen and I think that Crist will have a bright future. Remember he hasn't even stepped on the field to take a snap. If anyone will come in and make a splash on to our offense it will be Shaq and Cierre Wood. Dre1919 I think you just suck at playing the game and I bet that you were on the easy level too...

I say we reserve comment on JC until:

1) He gets a line he can actually throw behind.
2) His junior year is in full swing.

He's probably fairly comparable to BQ after two years.

I'm not sure but didn't Powlus get sacked a lot also when he was a QB? When OL starts blocking like there suppose to, you'll see JC produce.........

I was impressed with his accuracy and arm strength in that game with the high school seniors. I still say he throws the hardest pass in football as good as anyone in the country. He just cant throw well on the run. Some of those plays look like bootlegs from the beginning. I honestly cant be sure if the protection breaks down or if he just assumes it is going to break down and rolls out.

Thought this might be interesting:

If Jimmy Clausen shows the same improvement from his soph to junior season that B Quinn did, then mathematically his stats next year should be:
4199 passing yards
71.25 completion percentage
7.94 yards per attempt
38 touchdowns
12 interceptions
155.25 QB Rating
I realize that football isn’t at all mathematical, I just thought that it would be kind of interesting to figure something like this out. Not that this is going to happen without a better line, new offensive coordinator, or most importantly the actual improvement from clausen, but maybe there is some hope for next year’s offense.

i have said it before and will say it again, crist will be a better qb at notre dame than jimmy will ever be. Bigger, faster, stronger, and watching jimmy play he might be a little smarter too. I know jimmy is young, but i just think crist has more tools than jimmy, even at this point.
no you are way off on this one charlies' ineptitude as a coach is effecting jimmy directly he needs a qb coach he can trust the coaching staff is flying from the seat of their pants especially on offense dont put this on jimmy
