After seeing so many posts this week about that say things such as. Fire Charlie, Jimmy Sucks, Haywood can't call plays, Tenuta was overrated, OL is a bunch of pansies, RB's run like my grandma, DL can't stop the run, Brandon couldn't make a FG, blah blah blah. I thought it is time we all sit down take a deep breath, drink a beer and enjoy our team a little bit. So here is some things to chew on while we all get pumped up for our favorite catholic rival.

1. Season Expectations: For those of us that were not delusional or under the influence of an illegal substance, we recognized that 7-9 wins was the reality for this team. We could win 9 games with a couple good breaks. If injury or bad breaks got us, it may be only 7. What we did ask is that the team is competitive in the losses. WE ARE ON TARGET FOR OUR WINS AND ABSOLUTELY BEEN COMPETITIVE IN THE LOSSES.

2. Youthful Talent and Depth: When you look at this team we are finally seeing real elite talent developing on this team. Key word, DEVELOPING. On offense, we will start 7 underclassmen this week. Tate, Kamara, Floyd, Robinson, Clausen, Rudolph, Allen. On defense, it is harder to judge because of defensive alignments, but we will play underclassmen on DL, LB, CB. It is encouraging that we have this much great young talent, however they will make mistakes and are sometimes playing before physically mature, ie Ethan Johnson on DL. Only a couple years ago, we played people just because we had no option, no so anymore. TALENTED DEPTH RESIDES AT EVERY POSITION WITH YEARS OF ELIGIBILITY.

3. Recruiting: Charlie may have faults, but recruiting is not even close to one of them. I give him total credit for his efforts here. He has attacked the process with vigor and knows how to sell ND. He recognizes where he fails and changes strategy. 3 TOP 10 RECRUITING CLASSES AND A 4 ON ITS WAY.

4. Schedule: I don't really like this one, but it is the reality of todays college football until they change the bowl process. ND has a favorable schedule with 7 home games and more winnable games in the future. I also believe the nuetral site game is a positive. It is taking us to places like Texas where we recruit many kids. We can now tell a kid that we will be playing in your backyard. FAVORABLE SCHEDULE, MORE HOME GAMES, MORE TIME ON NBC, MORE NATIONAL EXPOSURE WITH NUETRAL SITES.

5. Flexible Charlie: Some people may not appreciate CW, but I can say that he has definitely shown the ability to change his style, strategies and plans to try to create success. Unlike many big ego coaches who say this is me, my style and my program, Charlie recognizes he needs to mold things to create success. WILLINGNESS TO LEARN.

6. Media Recognition: Normally ND draws the ire of most media about being overrated and undeserving of its rating. If you have been listening close lately, you are hearing most media recognize that ND is on the way up. Even, Mark May paid compliments to ND this past weekend. Bob Davie who is normally a sour former coach was spewing compliments. Herbie has been very positive in our direction. We have several players being recognized on the Rivals power rankings. All of this is great for recruiting. MEDIA KNOWS ND POWER IS GOING TO RETURN.

CONCLUSION: There are way to many things go in a positive direction for us to all go panic that the ND Football world is going to end. We are litterally only 2 plays from being a 7-1 football team. Think about these two and I am not pointing at these players being at fault, but it is two plays most will remember. If JC does not throw an INT on the first play of the 2nd half at NC and if Harrison Smith does not commit a dumb personal foul in the Pitt game we are 7-1. See folks, it is not as if we were drubbed up and down the field. Last year, we would have had to point out a whole series of plays. We are soo close to being soo good. It is coming. Actually folks, if a call was reviewed during the NC game, we would have won. When Blanton stripped the ball from NC's WR the refs said he was down. I have reviewed this play in slow motion dozens of times and it is a fumble all day long. That would have given us the ball. If you recorded the game, go back and watch it.
The recruiting, positve press and commitment by Charlie to work toward success all are great signs. IF and I mean IF Charlie does have to be let go in the future, I have total confidence that he will leave our University miles ahead of the previous two coaches. So, in the end celebrate our success and future because they are bright. Finally, did you really want this team to end up with 10 or 11 wins to only get slaughtered by some power in the BCS. We don't need that, we need steady growth and success back to the top of the mountain.
GO IRISH!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, ND's football world crumbled last year. This year we are trying to pick up the pieces, but have dropped a few.

I think that should be expected though, with how bad last year went there is now way you can expect a complete turnaround after one season, but as jonesman pointed out, they are well on the way. This is all setting up for a very exciting season next year.

I don't want to pee in anybody's Post Toasties, but given points 3 and 4, why aren't we better already? (I.e., ton of talent, easy schedule)

Why do we just edge San Diego State when we had a month to prepare?

ND may be "young" but how many teams are starting all seniors?

I'm missing something...

There is no way this is the same team that played SDSU in week one. We are so much better than that now. Granted we took a step back last week, but we are still moving forward and improving.

great points, all true. BUT, true irish fans still aren't gonna be satisfied... i am very glad we are on pace for our preseason # of wins prediction, but we shoulda beat NC and Pitt... in which case we would be 7-1 which would be way better than 5-3.

lets just kick some bc ass on saturday... GO IRISH beat eagles!!!!

Steve,
First, the 2006 class had nice talent in the OL, but lacked real gamebreakers. So our real gamebrekers are freshman or sophmores.
Second, when I am talking scheduling I am referring to 2009 and beyond. Next year we have 7 homes games vs 6 this year. Plus a game on nuetral field. Further, we pick up the likes of Nevada.

It's difficult to place blame for the losses on any one individual or group of individuals but since we all do it,,,,either consciously or subconsciously....my feeling is that there has been very little improvement on the offensive line and thus, the offensive line coach must be at fault. We have terrific running backs but the line simply isn't making any holes for them to run through. The line can be coached...we just need a competent coach to do so! If i've offended anybody, I'm sorry.

Re: "If i've offended anybody, I'm sorry."

I52,

I love that note of sublime diffidence. I should use that attenuation occasionally. And I agree with you in a way that invites two questions to the guys:

If we look at what we have, i.e., jonesman's kickoff points and where we are, I just sense that something is missing. An edge or attitude or toughness or something. Maybe it's a combination of things that is tough to synthesize. But I just feel we should be better than we are, apart from how good we project we will be. So:

Are we as good as we should be right now given the positive factors articulated by jonesman?

And is there a "vibe" shortfall around this football team? Do you guys feel that break-out energy a transition-to-greatness team has to have?

Guys,
Some of the EDGE you speak of comes from upper class leadership. When you look at our offense, it is completely devoid of seniors or 5th year seniors. On offense, your leader is normally a QB or stud RB. We have two sophmores. The WR's and TE's are all Soph or Freshman. In fact we will start only 4 upperclassmen this week on O. As for the Defense, I am seeing improvement and edge in the way they play. That comes from the fact we do have some leadership in Kuntz, Crum and Bruton. The downside of our D is that we are just youtful, undersized and not very talented on in our front 4. Ian is a soph and the only player over 300#'s. After him, we do not have a single player over 275#'s. That has greatly limited our pass rush with the front 4 which puts pressure on the rest of the D. The fact is that our D Line does not have an upperclassmen playing who will even sniff a tryout in the NFL. I love Kuntz and his effort, but he would not see the field on most SEC teams. Justin Brown is plain average. Ian is struggling because teams can afford to double up on him since the others are average. Neal is decent, but still undersized. The other issue is that we are undersized at LB other than Brian Smith. Harrison is talented, but playing out of position and Crum is good, but not great by any stretch. Enjoy the effort these guys are giving this year, there is lots of youth to help out next season.

jonesie,

Great analysis. So how about an extension that to the questions.

Are we as good as we should be?

Do we have the "Vibe" to kick it up a notch?

Absolutely as good as expected. We are a couple plays from being 7-1. Who would argue with that. I believe we have kicked it up most of the year. I believe we will give max effort this week. If we avoid the critical mistakes, we will win. UNC had deadly mistakes. Pitt we made bad penalty on critical drive and JC missed a wide open TD winner. Just remember, all the O playmakers will be back next season.

If you are going to lump me in with the title "Guys", you better use KY and pull my hair while you force me to play clarinet.

Speed and power. Eff the weight. This is college football. Give me speed.

Few plays that I watched the LBs, they were sprinting to point of attack and got suckered. Lateral pursuit suffered, which explains opponents easily gaining 18 on 3rd and 18. They not reading and pursuing laterally, nor dropping back to hook zones. That is a coaching scheme.

I have thought to myself that maybe ND should play a bit more base defense, and let the athletes attack instinctually.

A bit nitpicky, (like my pinky just performed on my nostril) but this defense is the first I have liked in years. I haven't punched a single puppie all year because of the D.

If my aunt had a dick, she would be my uncle.

We (dammit i keep saying we...) lost 3 games already.

I already called local security to wake me up to watch this one. If we lose, I have given them permission to lock me up.

(Trade-off was they offered their wives...)

Nueter,
IF we avoid the mistakes is a HUGE one for this team. It is not as if we were outplayed in our three losses. We have basically given the W to each of those teams through mistakes. This is why I still believe this team can be really good in the long run.
I remember back to Ty and Davie where you could see that the offense had no clue and the D was just floundering. Further, you could see the kids giving up. Then when games were lost, the coach had no real answers or ideas to change the dreadful play.
Let's look at the critical mistakes which have changed this season.
MSU: Clausen pass to Kamara INT in the MSU endzone. Floyd fumbles on MSU 14 yard line. Clausen throws INT on ND 22. That is 21 point swing. We also missed one or two FG's.
UNC: Clausen throws pick 6 to begin second half. Without that throw, we win. Further, we got jobbed on Blanton's strip of the UNC WR. It was legit and never got reviewed.
Pitt: Haysead 15 yard penalty for shoving Pitt player gives Pitt 1st down at midfield. You could see the air come out of the D.
Mistakes and turnovers will happen in football. I realize it is a stretching to think that none of the three at MSU would have happened, but at UNC and Pitt they were totally avoidable. Hayseed must use his head and not ruin a great stop by the D. At UNC, Clausen must look before he throws when backed up at his end of the field.

jonesman. Geez, you know your ND stuff. N.D. historian? Kudos.

I stated earlier in the season that this team looked pretty good. (I took bit of poop for it too.)

Can't believe the regular season is almost over.
