i don't think he'll go pro

i don't really have a reason for that thought at the moment either. i just imagine he'd stay all 4 years.

He has a pro frame, but he hasn't produced well enough to show me he will be much of anything on the pro level. I'll wait til the end of this year to see how that opnion changes for me.

He would more than likely be a mid-round pick at best if he went after this season. With improvement, and another season, he could be a potential first rounder.

Unless he picks it way up, He'll be back. He has NFL potential, but will benefit by sticking around. Who would even want to leave before next season?

i've never looked at the numbers, but it seems to me players who come out early are at the playmaker positions, like QB, RB, WR, CB, and not on the lines.

He'll head into next season with 3 years of experience at the collegiate level. He's big and very athletic. If he feels he can get more money now, I'm sure he'll file for the draft.

Young has the size, the experience, and the "measurables" to be a first day draft pick.

It's a strong OT class, so I don't think it he leaves because quite frankly he is not an elite prospect at this point.

He's not going anywhere this year. He isn't close to warranting all american status. He hasn't been part of a dominant line yet nor have they broken into the top 100 in rushing offense. He needs to add some muscle (arms look like they would have a difficult time pressing 300). He won't be gone early so don't worry. I hope he and the team improve to the point where he will get the attention though.

no way no way no way he goes pro after this year.

the kid has potential but has had it for the entire time he has been here. that potential has not turned into great play. his play has been average up to this point and it just wouldnt warrant anyone making an investment in him. i would be very disappointed if my favorite pro team used a draft pick on him.

for his benefit he really needs to stay and become a better blocker. he does have all the measureables but does not have the technique or attitude to be a great pro, or even a great college OL at this point.

i hope he keeps progressing and becomes one of the guys we can be proud of on sundays!!!

Bruton has a lot of work to do to move into the first 3-4 rounds in my opinion! Young is not going to leave early to be a late 2nd rounder...next year he could be a mid 1st or higher depending on what kind of year we have.

I believe Young will stay for four years... this line is very close... friendships formed in the face of adversity are extremely strong... he will be hungry for a championship and one will be staring him in the face next year... he'll put on ten more pounds of muscle and be a real force when he comes out after his senior year!

the only reason collegiate athletes declare for their respective draft early is to capitalize on the estimated guaranteed money they would see in a high round (meaning the first three rounds or so) draft slot. Young, while talented and potentially an all american next year, will not have nfl scouts whispering in his ear about big contracts if he left after this year. Walker was the only exception I can think of right now. He simply wasn't going to pay anymore.

The last really good OT that ND produced was Aaron Taylor. Sam Young is certainly no Aaron Taylor. If he starts producing this year like the highly touted OT he was in HS, then, maybe I'll start believing the Frosh All-American tag applied his first year. He needs to be dominant, above and beyond all other OT's in America if he wants to go pro after this year. I just don't see it happenin'.

Young is already a fringe 1st day draft pick. Just because the team played well below expectation last season doesn't mean his size/athleticism doesn't have pro scouts drooling.

This year? God no. He's a true junior.

At his current skill level he'd be lucky to go in the 4th round.

I agree with you. As a former player, Notre Dame will want Sam to get his degree. He would realistically need to graduate in December so he has the necessary time to prepare for the combines, to reshape his body in terms of body fat, speed( normally for O-line the care more about lateral speed, 10 and 20yd dash, and bench. My roommate for 3 years was Luke Petitguit. He came in as a tight-end. He sat for three years under Holtz, so coach davie had him gain weight for tackle. He did not do great the 2 years he was tackle, but he was getting better each day. He was very coachable, which is a plus. When it came time for the combine, he was 6'6, 305, and ran a 4.79 40, and bench pressed 225lb-44times. He went from a free agent to the 18th pick. Not every player has the potential to rapidly improve like Luke. Sam reminds me of Mike Rosenthal. A big wide tackle. He had more size then speed. They also want the tackle to be quick footed in pass defense so a guy like Jason Taylor doesn't run right passed you. I live in the same city SAM went to high school. He looked like a man among boys. I hope that he has not reached his peak as far as size, strength, and speed. I think as a senior he would be a late 1st - early second round pick depending what position players are projected as 1st round. Sam and the entire offense line have made great strides compared to last year.

I can't see it....he's not a big name among college linemen and certainly not someone who comes to mind when you think linemen ya gotta get on your team. He needs at least 1 more year playing in college.....maybe even a 5th.

Yup... Sam is still just a True Junior anyway. Most guys who go to the NFL are 5th year Seniors. Sam will leave in 2009...which in reality is 2 years away.

If he continues to develop and improve he will go in the first 3 rounds for sure aftr his senior season.

People need to bear in mind he's still really only 2 years into this...

Well, he can't have a 5th since he started as a TRUE Frosh.

Ryan Harris is doing excellent starting at RT in Devner and was a pretty good tackle for 4 years at ND, so I'd have to disagree with this statement.

As far as Sam Young, I think he's a smart kid (he did pick us over the in-state Gators, so he's a genius in my opinion) and will see that he has a lot to gain by coming back for a 4th year. If he stays healthy, he could easily become an All-American and possible 1st or 2nd round pick next year. That, combined with the fact that he'd be playing for a National Championship chance next year, make me believe that he'll return.

In my opinion Sam Young is overated. He hasn't done good since his freshman year.

Sam Young is a big sissy. He seems out of it and disinterested at time. What a waste of 6'8.

i've had enough of the one-line name calling and put down of individual players.

if people want to analyze a player's performance and break it down in depth, and then conclude in an intelligent fashion that this player or that is not getting the job done, then that is acceptable.

but the name calling and one-line put downs need to stop.

If he leaves now he will be destined to the same career as Darius. Bouncing between the practice squad and active roster.
