teams ALWAYS overlook SDSU.

In 2003 against OSU beat SDSU 16-13. OSU finished that year 11-2. SDSU finished 6-6.

In 2004 they lost to Michigan 24-21. Michigan finished 9-3 that year. SDSU finished 4-7

In 2005 they lost to OSU 27-6. OSU beat us in the Fiesta. SDSU finished 5-7

In 2006 they lost to Wisconsin 14-0. in 2006 Wisconsion went 12-1. SDSU finished 3-9

My point is, just because we only won by 8 doesnt mean we are in for a bad year.

I am going a little more in depth in a bit, hold on

I am looking at the stats from the game against OSU in 2003 as an example.

OSU had a total of 196 yards offense, 2 turnovers and was 1 for 10 on first downs.

They ended up going 11-2.

I think some of you guys are jumping off the bridge a little to early

Good info, nd23. I, myself, am somewhere in between being dissappointed in our mistake-laden performance yesterday and being disappointed in myself that I was expecting more from a still relatively young team in their first game after a debacle of a season.

Now that we've got the first game under our belt, I'd like to see our coaching staff work to minimize the mental mistakes made by our players and I'd like to see our players play with a bit more intensity and confidence.

They've also always been a confusing team throughout the years. They show flashes of being great and then they'll play awful at times. In terms of recruiting and overall skill, the Mountain West Conference has always had the big 3 (BYU, TCU, Utah) then SDSU, then everyone else. Obviously they're not a great time, but they're not as bad as everyone thinks they are.

Those are interesting points 23.

I think last years' play is what is causing difficulty for many of us. If ND had a decent year last year, we could chalk up yesterday as overlooking this opponent.

Was yesterday just overlooking the opponent, or evidence the team is still strugling with many of the same things as last year?

Since we won't know until the end of the season, with last year still very fresh in the fans' minds, it's easy to assume the later already.

Nonetheless, LET'S GO IRISH!

Seriously though, Like Lou said, a teams biggest progression is from week 1 to week 2, and just say if this was week 2, those 3 unconverted redzone visits would have been scores. thats 42-13 if maybe they would have less because our defense would have some game experience.

I really dont see how you guys can yell"Fire Charlie"

I must admit that I did say "Brian Kelley for new coach". It was wrong and I'm trying to stop being so negative after a loss/poor performance. I just expect excellence every game. This is Notre Dame and we need to let people know who we are because nobody fears us anymore. We need to put the fear of GOD in our opponents.

You will see that this Saturday at 330. I am expecting us to get up early on Michigan and not look back. 24-10 or 24-13, something like that. Maybe they will have less since their offense is anemic

Hey, if the team is young and we need to be patient, then they need to be patient with us not being negative. LOL

seriously though, last year it took most fans til thursday or friday to recover from one of the bad losses. looks like we're all cutting that down to the day after. we've made a 4-5 day improvement!

SD State was on an emotional high and played their hearts out... WE won and showed a great passing game in the fourth quarter.... Come kickoff this Saturday at 3:30 nobody will care what lasts weeks final score was, only that ND will be 2-0, beat Michigan and off to a great start. Go Irish!

But this was a bad win, not a bad loss. Big difference in recovery time. ;)

Yeah, thats what I was kind of thinking. SDSU left their hearts on the field, and we were kind of just going through the motions. Could be a hangover from last year, but hopefully Charlie and the Coaches kick it in the the *** before Michigan.

If ND was looking past SDSU, the coaches really laid an egg. After last season, how can you overlook anyone? I'm glad we won, but trying to sugarcoat it and say SDSU is good is sad. We sucked, we won, bring on Michigan.

Holy rationalization of a disappointing performance, Batman!

Interesting that SDSU's supposed sneakiness (or whatever you want to call it) wasn't pointed out BEFORE the game that most were expecting to win by at least a couple TDs for it to be considered a success.

In many ways we stunk.

But we got the W, so all is not lost. No blood, no foul.....for now, at least.

Let's see how the team plays in the next couple games, and hope (because we need to) for significant improvement in several areas.

That's where we stand.

I wasn't happy with the way we played. But after sobering up and reading post on different ND boards I've come to the conclusion to put last weekend behind and look forward to this saturday. I'm not as down on this team as some and not as positive as others. But I do think we win this weekend. scUM hasn't exactley played inspiring football.

Hello, its been quite a while since I last posted here (didn't really have the time at my old job). Figured I'd come back after being on the Sportsline board and having to put up w/ some of the idiotic haters today I felt like going back to an ND-Fan controlled board. Figure this is a good thread to jump back in on.

Anyway, I digress. I had a thought about what ND reminded me of this past Saturday. I love baseball, and I'm a big Mets fan. Now, anyone who even turned on ESPN last year knows how they screwed up at the end of the year. When they started this season, they were really going through the motions and playing w/ no intensity. That's kind of what ND looked like to me on Saturday. They went through the motions. When they had to exert their superiority talent-wise, they did. But they kind of played in a fog. Now, unlike baseball, you can't do that for 2/3's of the season and then turn it on at the end in football, which is a problem. So hopefully seeing those maize-and-blue jerseys next week will be what really gets them going and they'll play w/ some intensity, b/c if you can't get up for Michigan, you're at the wrong school imo.

I still have high hopes for the Irish. Was this a pretty win? No and there's no excuse. We should have been able to walk all over SDSU. With that being said, a win is a win and I am looking forward to the next game.

There's so much potential for this year and the Irish will get better each and every day. I expect us to win against Michigan but it will be close. This will still be a 9+ win season for the Irish.

People calling for Charlie's job is crazy!. I know last year was awful. It was extremely painful to watch. It was the worst season of my lifetime! But lets not forget that he took us to 2 strait BCS games in his first two years! To my knowledge, that has never been done before. Also, remember the type of team we had on the field the last two years under Willingham; not to mention the Davie years? He has brought in loads of talent we haven't seen since Holtz. The man can flat out recruit. Plus, he knows a little about football with 4 Super Bowl championship rings. This is ridiculous! Last year was awful, but I think he more than deserves a pass on last year. As bad as Saturday looked, we still won. We came back to get the "W" and that is what counts! I have confidence our team will improve as the season goes on and have the utmost confidence in Charlie Weis. Go Irish!

The Irish just need to keep plugging right now. Improvement every game. This is not a scUM team we can let off the hook. Anything beyond this game? Getting better is the key

I wouldn't bring up things that had "never been done before" while attempting to defend [NAME REDACTED] after last year.
