What do you guys think will be the first play of the season? I'm just hoping it will not be a screen!

Ha Ha, You and I both! I say let's keep it simple with a Allen to the outside for the first play. But then again if we are playing with the "dive right in" mentality maybe the deep pass to Golden would be appropriate.

I will be happy with anything other than a QB sack. If the QB can stay on his feet the first play, I will breathe a huge sigh of relief.

i suspect it could be a running play. they should want to start dominating the line right away.

although a deep pass would be fun, I would hate to start the year with 2nd and ten, or even worse a sack (those deep plays take a while to develop). I actually think a screen is a good idea. the defense will be so geared up to get to jimmy, just let them run right by and toss it to allen. then spend the next few plays running it down their throat.

If it isn't a running play I'm going to be disappointed in Charlie. He promised us a nasty football team, where is it?

Give Hughes the ball running behind Young and Stewart. Huddle up and then do it again. All game long.

If you want a nasty football team start pounding the rock from the beginning. Line up and say we're coming right at you, what the **** are you gonna do about it. Especially against a team like SDSU, where you know we are the stronger, more physical team. Maybe let Jimmy sling it around a little bit after the first physical TD drive, to warm up before the Michigan game.

For the SDSU I'd love to Hughes/Aldridge get 20+ carries with Allen get lots of touches as well. No reason to pass the ball when you can dominate the line of scrimmage and control the clock with the running game.

i agree. robert hughes dominating on the ground suits me just fine with some allen mixed in. aldridge is a good kid but honestly he can't compete with hughes. many here like james but i prefer robert as the feature back til he proves he can't do it which i doubt will happen. one man's opinion

don't forget, Haywood is calling plays now.

Honestly, I still think Weis should be at fault if the first play isn't a run. He is trying to instill a tough mentality into the team, which should be seen throughout the entire roster as well as the staff. Charlie should be and hopefully will be still be a very big part in the offensive preparation. If Haywood calls for a pass on the opening play, anyway I look at it, the fault still leads me back to Weis. That's me personally.

But who's kicking off? Us or SDSU? If the mods are OK with it I could make it a sportsbook event.

Who kicks the opening kickoff? 1 to 1 odds. Anyone up for it?

Mods?

BTW, I picked sweep to Allen but that's not what I want. I'm with the majority here. Pound it up the gut!!!

Anything that doesn't result in a turnover or sack, or a penalty. The first 2-3 drives I would like to establish Clausen and then just pound the ball to the right side behind Young/Stewart (a mix of both before the game gets out of hand if it does). I say Go route to Golden for 6.

SDSU will be kicking off. Charlie has always seemed to take the ball first. But I think if the Irish win the flip, there is know doubt he takes the opening kick-off to get the Offense confidence. If SDSU wins the flip, they defer. Why wouldn't you put the Irish offense on the field first after last year.
