Weis said that Armando Allen is running back 1A and that Aldridge and Hughes are competing for 1B. Also, about the Clausen pics he said, "First, I want to say that I don't condone underage drinking, but with that said, gimme a break and let's move on."

A couple of other notes:

- Weis was adament about moving forward and refused to answer any questions regarding our 2007 season.

- The team has matured both physically and mentally, as both the first team and second team offensive linemen weigh in at over 300 pounds each; Armando, Aldridge, and Hughes have increased their bench press by 100 pounds each; David Bruton, who Weis described as a 'freak of nature' increased his squat by 95 pounds; and all the interior linemen can squat 600 pounds.

- Concerning the Beer Olympics-gate pseudo-scandal, if any players have been reprimanded it all, it has not been disclosed to the media, and Weis clearly wishes to move forward from the non-incident.

- In addition to Mo Crum's reliability at linebacker, Brian Smith has shown the ability to move around and make plays putting him in the versatile position of competing for both the inside and outside linebacker positions.

- The loss of Walls is a loss of quality game experience, says Weis, but it also opens up the opportunity for the other cornerbacks to display their talent. Weis said he has a lot of confidence in Raeshon McNeil to step up and compete for the position, and thinks very highly of Gary Gray as well.

- The incoming freshman will no longer be subject to the pressure of winning a position on a depleted depth chart as the class of 2008 recruits were forced to last season. With a largely filled in depth chart, Charlie says the incoming freshman will start at 3rd team at best and those who wish to play will have to prove themselves against experienced and highly regarded players at every position.

- When asked about a comment from Lee Corso that Weis would not be able to relinquish play calling duties for more than a few games, Weis responded by saying that 'the statement is erroneous.' Weis says he has put in a lot of time and thought into the decision and has confidence in his staff to do their jobs and run their portion of the team. Weis also seemed very eager to take a step back and have the opportunity to macro-manage and be more involved in the development of players, defense, and special teams in addition to his offensive expertise.

- Ragone has made himself a very strong candidate on the first team at tight end with whom Yeatman, who pulled a hamstring muscle recently and may be unable to practice at full speed, must compete against the earn playing time. In addition, Luke Schmidt has also been getting reps at tight end.

- Though all three quarterbacks will initially receive equal repetitions in practice in order to show where they each stand, the starting quarterback position, Weis says, is clearly Clausen's to lose. Clausen, as a product of his increased weight and strength, has matured mentally and as a leader and will be expected to absorb a larger portion of the Notre Dame playbook.

- Pat Kuntz has the versatility to play both on the inside and the outside of the defensive line while Ian Williams plays with a naturally low center of gravity and is thus well suited for the Nose Tackle position.

I'll have more notes as I remember them. But considering I just came home from a root canal and I'm all hopped up on vicodin, I think I've hit all the major points.

Go Irish !

armando being back 1A is the most encouraging thing i have heard in a while. we already know hughes is going to be good, but there were still questions of whether aramando would ever get back to his pre-injury form. the fact that he has beaten out hughes and JA does away with many of those doubts.

I like seeing Harrison Smith at SAM. I think he's going to do well for us this year.

I would not go as far as to say that he has beaten them out. Weis stated in the presser that in the spring, Hughes was practicing very well while competing against the rest of the pack. What he said in the presser was that Armando is their change of pace type back whereas Hughes and Aldridge will be competing against each other for the same type of playing time. Nonetheless, his advocating of Allen for the punt and kick off return positions indicates that Weis thinks very highly of his ability and that he is very likely to be back to his pre-injury form.

Great post Jason, thanks! I am at work and not able to get the feed of the presser. I am not as enamored by the thought of the O-line's weight being over 300. It doesn't matter how big you are unless you put in the time on your fundamentals, footwork, and technique. I would rather see a bunch of well disciplined 275-280 pounders than a 300 pound version of the OL we saw last year.

Good luck boys! Work hard and lets get some redemption for last year!

I'm surprised to see Morrice Richardson starting at DE. Isn't he a little small for a 3-4 DE? Also, happy but surprised to see that Harrison Smith apparently as of right now is a starter. Thought he would come in at LB in passing situations. Also, too bad Toryan Smith still isn't starting. Seems like he has been one spot away for a while now.

this is all a first draft and im sure there will some changes made. this is the first time the incoming freshman will be able to put everything on display for the team and coaches plus all the hard work and training is about to start paying off for the veterans

I know it's a first draft but I didn't realize LT would be listed as Duncan or Turkovich. So does that mean Romine is 3rd string? Maybe he still isn't healthy, who knows.

over the next couple of weeks i really hope the starters can 1 stay healthy and 2 distance themselves so there isnt too much of a guessing game happening at some positions

In my small mind, I think I prefer to open up with a bruising back like Aldridge and Hughes, to soften the defense. Then the speed back (AA) will find the holes easier.

That's what I'll do when I start coaching ND football!

There must be something we're missing as far as Robert Hughes is concerned. He put up great numbers at the end of last season, they ran him almost every down in the Blue Gold game and then they come back and say he's competing for the 1B spot on the depth chart. I do remember seeing an interview with Mike Haywood talking about Hughes' progress and he said something about him needing to improve his blocking skills. I guess that would make a little sense considering if that if he struggles to protect the QB on non running downs, he's not as much of an asset as the rest of us would like to think he is. Armando Allen looks like he has a ton of potential, but you would think that on a team that has so much potential and not much in results, you would actually go for the guy who's put up some results. Who knows, guess we'll have to wait a few more weeks and see how it all pans out.
