Baseball is dead to me

I say this with sorrow in my heart, as I can remember as a young boy being able to listen to Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey announce Detroit Tiger games all day long. I remember feeling like I had found buried treasure when I could get a good signal and hear Harry Carey on the Cubs broadcast, or even a Cincinnati Reds affiliate a couple of times. I just loved the storytelling and the way the drama unfolded as I lay in the grass on a hot summer afternoon in the backyard.

I was manipulated by the power surge of the late 90's. Seeing Mark, Sammy, Barry and the gang chase history changed the game. It made you forget when guys like Cecil Fielder, Darrell Evans, Jim Rice, and Dave Kingman were winning HR titles and batting .220. Back when 40 home runs was a BIG deal, and 50 was legendary. I just saw that some guy named Carlos Quentin just hit his AL-leading 29th home run. In August. This should be an impressive accomplishment, but my first reaction was 'that's it?' It makes me forget amazing games like Jimmy Key vs. Frank Tanana on the last day of the 1987 season, with a Larry Herndon home run being the difference in a 1-0 classic (ok, a little youth-driven Tigers bias, but a great moment for Tigers fans).

Baseball has lost what once made it great. Stories like Tampa Bay's success and 100 years of futility in Chicago (while making a run at a division crown) should draw attention to the sport, but it does not, or at least not yet. I do believe the Cubs making a run and winning the whole thing this year would be a great burst of adrenaline for the sport. But then what? Individual stories such as A-Rod making a run at Bonds?

Performance enhancers and corruption have impacted this sport more than any other major sport. It has made a sport I once loved something that I do not typically watch until playoff time, if at all.

Come back, baseball.

i have not been enthraled with baseball for a few years now, and my interest is still declining. there are just aspects to current MLB that turn me off, especially when i'm watching with my son and trying to teach him to grow up to be a young man. then a brawl breaks out over a batter looking cross-eyed at a pitcher. or a cheating doper hits another home-run. or a manager acts worse than my 3-year old and throws a tantrum. thanks baseball.

I made my comment about the avatars in the Avatars thread. Thanks, hijackers. :)

Yeah, junk like 'Manny being Manny' just turns me off from ever wanted my sons to get enthralled with 'America's PAST-time.' There is a sense of entitlement in most sports, it just seems out of place in baseball.

Great post, IA.

I quit watching baseball in '94. IMO, the strike killed baseball for a lot of people. I started watching again when Sosa & McGuire were going after the HR record. After that, my enthusiasm dried up again. Nothing has happened that would make me get back into it, and I doubt I ever will.

baseball almost killed itself with the strike. then came CAL RIPKEN and his streak. he was a man who took his job seriously. showed up everyday and took the field. just as the rest of us have to go to work andbust our butts to pay bills he seemed to have the same frame of mind. his numbers werent always great and he couldnt hit for weeks at a time but you could count on him to stay after every game signing autographs for every single person in line. no mateer the weather or time he made the fans a priority. people like that are what made baseball great for me. now its all about manny being manny and i deserve this this is my house. its all bullshit. you play a childs game and i guess you think that gives you the right to act like children. i miss baseball but i cant cheer for these children in the million dollar sandlot

I feel the same way about Basketball but to each thier own... as a baseball fan I will say this... the other major sports (Football especially) have just as much of a drug and enhancer problem as baseball if not more...

unfortunately this country's top news writers grew up with baseball first and get worked up more about scandals in Baseball and seem to want to let scnadals in other sports slide... that's my honest opinon... should the artifical power surge be forgiven or excused?NO,... but niether should athletes going up into stands to beat fans... betting scandals... rampant roid use in ANY sport... or a complete Pay Per View-ization on a major sports league, which is what is going on slowly but surely with the NFL

whatever... I TOTALLY understand poeple's current beef with Baseball, I just see a lot of the same level of gripes in other sports and no one seems to care... at least not nearly at length they do with baseball... the double standard is shown in this very thread...

football coaches throw tantrums... so do hockey coaches... basketball players are BY FAR worse than most other sports in thier reactions to bad calls... all four major sports have lost seasons or major parts of to strikes.... T.O. is a much worse role model than Manny... yet all of these things are thrown in baseballs' face.... one of you even admitted a double standard.... with the what is good in other sports seems out of place here comment

whatever...

Baseball>>>football>hockey>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>NASCAR>>>>>> basketball

true acamp. i'm disappointed with the current state of affairs of all pro sports, this thread just so happened to mention baseball which is why my comments were focused there.

Yep baseball is the only pro, college , or even H.S. sport with a drug problem or cheating. Why do we even watch this crap.

that's a good point... lol

guess I'm quick to defend my fav sport...

for those wondering why I am here instead of an Angel site since I like baseball more... well as much as I love baseball, nothing matches ND and COLLEGE football in terms of passion in my heart, it's a weird dynamic I guess... but other than baseball the NHL and NFL and anything else doesn't even come close

I prefer college sports to pro sports anyday. College Football and College basketball are one and two in my book. Baseball comes third. Pro Football isn't what it used to be even in the mid to late 80's when I started watching pro-football. So for me it goes

College Football
College Basketball
Baseball
Pro Football
Soccer (La Liga, Premier League)
Pro Basketball

basketball is utter complete garbage.... even KU winning the title got me to watch HALF the title game... NBA doesn't even exist to me... couldn't even tell you the last three champs when I can go back fifty years each year in all the other sports...

but you are right, I forgot soccer... love the Euro cup leagues and the US national team... that would go RIGHT behind the NFL for me
