Yeah, this sux. However, as an ND fan, its hard for me not to remain optimistic about our depth. I think McNeil will get his first shot at this spot now. This guy is a stud. Put Gray in on Nickel situations, Blanton or Harrison Smith on Dime packages. It could be worse, our schedule could be as bad as it was last year. My question is, does this affect his eligibility at all or does he still have 2 years left after this?

this sucks altogether but at least we have a quality guy in gray. this will help him get on the field and gain experience in game situations. it will definitly make us a little more vulnerable if injuries happen but this is why we have depth and players who can play multiple positions

dude, this would give him another year of eligibility. sure it sucks losing him this year, but can you imagine how loaded our 2010 defense would be if we added a fifth year darrin walls to the mix. off course this assumes he actually gets back next spring and wants to play a fifth year.

are you still eligible for a fifth year if it is related to (ass-uming) academics? the pass defense is (was?) the strongest part of the defense. i realize that there is depth, but he is solid at his position. it just means that someone, and not saying they cant, will need to step up their game. i just do not want to see a "rebuilding" at the part of the defense everyone was counting on. there is an upside to this and i'm sure that the front seven realize that it will even more important to stop the running game which i figured going into the season WILL turn alot of heads.......56 days, 20 hours, 9 minutes. and counting

if im not mistaken, julius jones missed a year due to academics and was able to come back for a fifth year in 2003.

Crap. That sucks about Walls. As for Hord, he was buried on the depth chart anyway. Good luck to him.

i really do hope he decides to come back for a fifth year. not just for our football team but to finish his degree. no matter what happens in football a degree from notre dame is a thing to honor.

and i think hord realized the talent that was coming in and that other than being a potential special teams standout he wasnt going to see much playing time

I told ya a week ago...sad news...he is our most talented player in the secondary maybe besides Bruton...this is a huge loss and Gary Gray needs to step up and fill the void along with Raeshon McNeil...

Let's all wish Hord the best in his future Journey. He's a good kid and I hope he gets the play time he wants.

As long as he isn't a student he would be eligible for a fifth year

It's looking really good that Lambert came back. I expect big things out of Gary Gray, but he's basically a freshman out there so far.

Anybody know or where could I find info on whether Hord might have graduated? I mean that would suck to spend all that time and ND and then move on when you were so close to getting a degree from ND. I was just curious.

From what I've heard I believe Hord transfered to a Div 1AA school to play football, then return to ND to graduate.

I hate to be the downer here, but if our "quality fill in" is Gray we are in deep shit...

Gray has a ton of talent but he is coming off an injury and, HAS NEVER PLAYED A SNAP N COLLEGE.... who the hell knows if he'll even play???

our defensive secondary was looking to be the strenght of the D, now we lost one of the reasons for that expectation

IMO losing Walls drops my expections for this season from a sure fire 7-9 win bowl team to a team that may be on the outside looking in come bowl season again...

This bites really hard. What I'm wondering is who is going to take his place?

Sounds like a combo of McNeil and Gray. Gray was his backup, but no snaps taken yet. At least McNeil had been seeing time, but is on the opposite corner.
