The fact that this is happening today, that we get good news, and you have a handful of people not being able to react in a positive manner really comes down to one undeniable fact: the issue is with these particular individuals and how they wallow in their fandom. Has nothing to do with ND, Pete, Coach Free. There are dudes here on this message board and throughout the fanbase that do not celebrate being an ND fan. They straight up mourn it and carry it like some kind of fucking burden.

Make me understand, but right now, this is tremendous sports news in my house. My text messages are blowing up with joy. This is awesome.
Happiness and misery are choices. A large portion of the ND fanbase wakes up everyday and chooses misery.

I think he knows that he needs to develop more experience and credibility before he jumps to the NFL. Rah-Rah coaches just don't really work with highly paid professional athletes who understand the game. These guys want tactical instructions, not pep talks. Does he want to be the next Herm Edwards (Rah-Rah) or Andy Reid?

He made the right call, the NFL will always be there....He jumps to early and he could crush his whole legacy. MF is a college coach, jumping to LSU would have been way smarter than jumping to the Giants. Glad he made the right call!

What are you talking about?

You're right, it's actually nothing but speculation on your part based on nothing tangible.

Why bury your head in the sand? He was entertaining discussions with NFL teams. He was also connected to jobs in the NFL last year.

I get we all love ND and college football, but the pinnacle of this sport is the Super Bowl.

I guess I'm on a devils advocate kick. I believe Nick Saban achieved the pinnacle of the sport, not Doug Pederson.

Sure. The message was just kind of weird from Freeman in my opinion. You have a six year contract but you say “run it back?” That just seems more fitting of a player who is coming back for their senior year.

Also, beat writers have been commenting pretty regularly that Freeman has real NFL interest. Omalley went so far as to say that a group of people in the know were out to dinner. Someone proposed a bet if freeman would be at ND after 2027 (so two more years). no one would take the bet.

I love Freeman and the type of coach he is. Realistically I don’t think he is here much longer
Sorry, but this absolutely hilarious. And if the anxiety of a potential departure is predicated on THIS, it's even more hilarious. I don't even know how to process this.

Was O'Malley at the dinner? What constitutes "people in the know" precisely? What were the conditions of "the bet"? Is there more context to this story or am I just stupid?

Weeks of speculation bordering on paranoia. He finally says something publicly stating he's back and the response is more speculation and paranoia.

Realistically, he signed a seven year extension and got a raise. Despite that, The arrow still points toward him not staying much longer?

I also think people are understating what an incredible opportunity being the HC of the NY Giants is. Despite how crap they've been the last decade+ they are still THE NFL team of the capital of the world. They were just listed 4th most valuable sports franchise in the world by Forbes despite the ineptitude. Do I think Dart is the right guy to tie yourself to? No, but its still an incredible gig that basically every college coach would consider.

you could argue as his kids are getting older and graduating HS it would be a good time for him professionally to broaden his horizons
Vinny is off to college next year, and I've been of the mind that MF has taken advantage of the unexpected time off to enjoy being with his family while everyone is still in the house. No guarantees on that going forward with the NCAA wrestling schedule going from early November to late March.

Yup, and the list right now is Clark Lea and I honestly don't think you'd have to go to name #2. I hope he keeps winning at Vandy.
Why in the world would we want a 26-35 coach? I mean, I like Clark Lea....But dude has done NOTHING without Pavia. If ND hired him, I'd call it the worst hire ever.

I have a feeling the Giants job will be open again in a few years years. Or, if the next coach there is successful, in ~10 years. Parcells and Coughlin were only there for 7 and 11 years, respectively, and obviously each won two SBs.

LOL. Sure, pal. I'll probably get better oxygen than the horse shit you're all shoveling today.

Entertaining discussions? What does that even mean? How many FORMAL interviews has he had with NFL franchises?

The Chicago Bears talked to 87 people last year to some degree while they waited for their guy to get eliminated from the playoffs. Freeman was one of those. Their interest in hiring him was zero.

He just signed a new deal and the dickhead brigade can only respond with speculation that he's still going to bolt.

It's cool, though.

I think you are underselling how difficult it is to win 10 games at Vanderbilt, regardless of roster.

It has happened exactly once in program history.

BK also entertained NFL jobs in 2012 and then that went nowhere for the next decade, even with some level of success after 2016. Doesn't mean anything.

What he did with Pavia this year is incredible and good for him. But go look at his year by year record at Vandy and when he did win...who he beat. Glad he made some noise this year, but to tab him as the next guy after Freeman is hilarious.

Bill Belichick (pre Jordon) or Nick Saban? Look at how many people watch the Super Bowl vs. the college football title game.

Look I get it…. I agree with you. College football is much more lovable than the NFL. But I am not naive to the fact that I believe that because I love Notre Dame and the tradition of college ball.

The rest of the country does not feel the same way as you and me.

There is some truth to this, but again, Marcus Freeman's entire coaching career has been college in Indiana and Ohio. That's it.

On top of that, the Giants are probably making a mistake letting this GM stick around to hire another head coach.

Omalley was at the dinner. It was writers and people who would know things about the program. Basically, people think he wants the nfl sooner rather than later. It was on a Irish illustrated podcast shortly after the Stanford game.

I’m just stating what was said. I don’t think you will find someone on the beat who doesn’t think Freeman will be in the nfl sooner rather than later. They’ve been wrong before so take it with a grain of salt

Well, that’s because NFL teams didn’t want him. NFL teams actually DO want MF.

You think?

It's collectively as bad as it's been, maybe ever? Certainly in a long long time.

They're not getting leaks and insider info anymore. So they stir shit up. Some fans like to eat the shit. Some don't. To each their own.

NFL teams definitely showed interest in 2012. All I am saying is - none of us know what next year will bring. After BK flirted with the NFL, it would have been a fair but incorrect assumption that would have happened most offseasons. But it didn't - just like this NFL interest could dry up for Coach Freeman as well. So enjoy the news that he's back to coach arguably our most talented team in 30 years next year, and stop pissing in everyone else's cornflakes. Prognosticating about next offseason is a fool's errand.

Fortuna 3 minutes into their live show says well he could still leave anyways

These beat guys absolutely hate Notre Dame
I really believe there is some truth to them hating MF because he has made their job impossible / has made them looks like fools repeatedly. No other beat in the country tries to take a supposedly "neutral" stance like they do.

I'm not disagreeing with you that the "pinnacle" of the sport is SB Sunday with all it's festivities. I'm just saying that MF imo is an amazing college football coach. He doesn't need to go to an NFL franchise to etch his name in the history books, I'd rather be Nick Saban than Mike Tomlin.

Why are you getting so angry. I want him to stay more than anyone, but I’m just being realistic. He is gonna make the jump eventually. Probably after a title

Excited he is still coaching ND. I'm withholding making an opinion until the details come out, but the reporting so far leads me to believe this will be a thing after every season.

Are we really going to pretend BK in 2012 and MF in 2025 are the same, at all? I don't think they are even comparable. Just start with their relationships with the school, completely different.

Has Fortuna ever been even remotely positive about ND? I don't need the beat to be rah-rah cheerleaders, but my God what an absolute hair puller of a twat. It's not the fanbase's fault that he was put on the ND beat 20 years ago at ESPN and he got some emails from people calling him a moron who didn't know anything about ND when he wrote articles with glaring mistakes in them. Yet after being tossed out with the rest of the expendable staff at ESPN years ago because he didn't provide any meaningful value, here's Matty years later still getting a check off half-baked ND content.

Being critical is fine. Being a hair puller like Fortuna and some of the people on here (we all know who) is entirely different. If you hate this team and th fans so much, do something else with your time.

It's just exhausting having a fanbase that seemingly can't even enjoy ANY good news. This was as good as this was going to get during this coaching carousel - we all know NFL flirtations aren't going anywhere, and we don't need to be reminded of that today.
