The two welfare teams were ranked #20 and #24. That’s dumb considering it’s a 12 team playoff.

Who cares. It's more likely that whomever they stick in there at 11 and 12 is gonna suck.

What are you talking about, we were ranked #11.

Again, ND got left out for Bama.

You guys are acting like every P4 in the playoffs are equal enough to be competitive. We have years of data saying otherwise.

It literally does not matter. Multiple teams are gonna get blown out. It will happen. I'm not crying if it's JMU instead of OU.

Better them than App State.

What the fuck are you even talking about?

What's the functional difference to the tv viewer, tho? The color of the uniforms and mascots?

I'm saying the G5 teams are not the problem. The problem is huge conferences that don't do a good job of determining the best team in their own conference, WHICH WAS DONE PURPOSEFULLY by the conferences, creating confusion about what the playoff is supposed to be.

Those G5 teams are in the playoff because the CFP didn't want to be sued because they know they can't represent it as the 8/10/12 best teams because they don't even determine the 1 best in their own conference. It's why they want to guarantee 4 or 5 from the SEC and B1G - it's solely about getting more money.

And because of that, there will always be shit teams in the playoff. Adding a G5 or 2 doesn't change that.

Be mad at the actual bad guys, not these little schools.

Blowouts happen, but it would stand to reason that a P4 team ranked in the top 15 would have a better chance to win (or at least compete to win) a playoff game than a G5 team—especially one with no wins over any P4 opponents all season.

No one is mad at little schools. 🤷‍♂️. You’re making strawman arguments, and I’m unclear why.

Yeah. Came here to say this. Idk how it’s even debatable.

Blowouts happen but Tulane and JMU were 17 and 20 pt underdogs today. They were expected to be blown out.

Sure there’s a chance that a fringe top-12 P4 team gets blown out by #5/#6, but on expectation, it will be a much closer matchup.

At the start of today, the G5 schools had the same likelihood of winning the championship as ND did this morning. But if any of ND/BYU/Texas/Vandy/USC/etc had been put in… they could actually get hot and win it.

I don’t see how anyone can disagree that the P4 and G5 or 6 need to be two separate divisions. Occasional upsets aside, there will never really be any competition in a playoff, so what are we doing? Let’s just split them into two divisions as it should be. It’s dumb that we are still pretending.
College basketball and college football are two radically different situations. It’s practically impossible for a G5 team to win three consecutive playoff games against Power 2 programs. What are we doing here?

Will be interesting to see if what have amounted to tune up games will help or hinder Oregon and Ole Miss. Gotta think it helps Ole Miss quite a bit in terms of working out any kinks given the coaching changes.

"Welfare schools'

OK.

Further, I have a hard time believing fans of the program that was on the losing end of these bowls are arguing for keeping out certain schools on the basis of improving the competition.

We got left out for Miami. You don’t even know the rankings.

The rankings were manipulated to keep Bama and an ACC team in. Bama was the one who should have been out and ND in.

I understand the workings of the CFP and conferences better than some may think.

This is a playoff that is supposed to decide a national championship. The best teams should be involved. We’re not talking bowl games from a bygone era.

Yeah. We got left out for Miami because the ACC had nobody in.

HOLY FUCK, now we're getting some where.

So, if you believe this, and you very much that have that right, do you think the committee and conferences share that belief?

The reason this format exists is because the 5 power conferences at the time all wanted a guaranteed payout. Everyone whining about the G5 should blame their own conference commissioner.
Can’t believe I’m quoting the obnoxious Tessitore but he did (I’m sure at ESPN’s producer’s prompting) explain that the reason for the G5 inclusion is to avoid an anti-trust suit. Is that the sole reason? No clue. But he & Jesse were surpisingly transparent at the end of the Tulane game. Palmer admitted the game was non-competitive & they agreed that the CFP needed to address it. Palmer said something lazy to the effect of “I’m all for inclusion but…” and questioned the inclusion of two G5 teams. I was shocked before I realized I was probably one of a handful of folks still watching.

I wrote this before the rankings came out. I know the drill. It’s about money. I knew we were getting fucked. Doesn’t mean I can’t bitch about 2 shitty teams (Tulane and JM) getting in.
I’ll say
9. Miami
10. Bama
11. ND

I just don’t see them leaving out a bubble Bama team two years in a row and the ACC will want at least one team. Dumb reasons of course but it is CFB.

After I watched McIlroy and McDonough do a five minute rehearsed bit on why Miami should make the playoffs after the ACC title game, I can’t view anything any of their announcers say outside of the lens of what ESPN wants and told them to do.

It’s good for ESPN to have less G5 teams. These games tonight are gonna have absolutely dog shit ratings.

Devils advocate here....I'd much rather watch a lopsided boring game with two teams I don't care about
....than have to sit through Texas/Vandy vs Oregon/Ole Miss. Those games sound like too much fun for a Sat night to kick off the holiday season.
