Also should be noted, conferences make a lot of money from their conference championship games. Unless or until those are replaced by more CFP games (which seems likely over the next couple years), the power conferences will do everything in their power to protect the conference championship game losers. Otherwise, teams may just start opting out and they'd have a mutiny on their hands.
So the committees jockeying of Bama and ND is most likely just a simple way for the committee to protect Alabama from being jumped by an AT LARGE team should they lose (such as Vandy or Miami). The fact that ND and Bama are "the most discussed pairing in the last 2 years" does not protect Bama from being flipped back with Notre Dame with a Bama loss in the CCG. I believe Bama could still be knocked out completely with a convincing loss and a BYU win.
