With the new unlimited transfers, I feel like admissions should be way more lenient. Guys only have to be here two semesters. That means you only need to keep them eligible for one, really. And that assumes we can't just take the riskiest guys in the summer after letting them finish the spring at their old school.
They don't feel that way. Admissions, I'm sure, want to ensure a student is graduating. They don't want mercenaries.

The Riley Leonard transfer was a little bit shocking. Riley had only been in school 3 years and transferred in with only 1 year of eligibility left. Everyone at ND knew that Riley would probably not be able to graduate after his one year at ND. He had to satisfy a fair number of the Core Curriculum requirements and there would likely be issues with some transfer of credits.

Notre Dame took him anyway. This was a pretty big deviation. Virtually never done at ND. I'd love to have known what some of those discussions were like between Freeman and Admissions, between the Leonard family and Admissions.

I wouldn't look for this to happen again anytime soon, but in this unique case it was able to get done.

They were able to take Brandon Joseph who was an undergrad transfer that was 3 years out of HS a few years prior. Leonard, like Joseph, was coming from an elite academic institution so it was easier to get them through admissions. My assumption is that ND is able to do that if the player is coming from an elite academic institution (Duke, NW, Stanford, Vandy).

We didn’t take a lot of Leonard’s credits so the school he came from doesn’t really matter. If it mattered, they would have accepted his credits. and then he took theater.

Riley Leonard didn’t come to play school

Not specific WR's, but IIRC they mentioned the RB, Smothers. Brice also mentioned that Pitt has some nice Defensive Lineman and said it in a way that sounds like he has some inside info. He didn't mention any names, specifically, but he's almost certainly talking about their DT's. Pitt has 2 DT's, Nick James and Sean FitzSimmons, who are both redshirt juniors and have both been named to at least 1 weekly All-ACC PFF team. My guess is Nick James. Prister said they need to bring in at least 2 DT's.

Last year they mentioned that Admissions would be more lenient with taking undergrad transfers who aren't just true freshman from ACC and Big Ten schools, and they ended up bringing in Hughes from a Big Ten school (USC). I'd be very surprised if they didn't do their due-diligence on Marsh. If there is a realistic chance they can get him through Admissions, I have no doubt they'll do everything possible to entice him to hit the portal.
2008 getting aroused.

Brandon Joseph transferred with multiple years of eligibility left. Riley Leonard transferred with one.

I still can't recall Notre Dame ever taking a transfer (besides Leonard) which would exhaust his eligibility and probably not be able to graduate.

Transfer policies came up on the Irish Illustrated podcast today. It didn’t really sound like any meaningful progress has been made on this front.

The portal is going to be a mad house this year with all the coaching changes occurring and coming.

I would throw 2 of our kickers in and grab one.
Lorcan Quinn an Irish Freshman Kicker @ Marshall is a stud and future Lou Groza winner. ND should go after him

Biagi and staff haven’t shown us anything that they can develop or evaluate talent, so landing anything good in the portal will be pure luck

What is the typical career progression for a special teams coordinator? Can’t imagine there’s a world where Mason comes back to CFB with the same role/title, but that’s a guy I’d love to have back on the staff.

People are saying go get a kicker like Jeter and Burnette weren’t very good at South Carolina and UNC

Burnette was 138/140 at UNC on XPs. He was 19/20 in 2023 on all FGs and in 2024 8/9 below 40 yards. Every “get this guy” kicker is gonna have a stat line all but the same as Burnette just did.

Problem has been both of our kickers the last two years have gotten injured and that has hindered their efficiency on the field. Obviously, both knew what they were doing before they got here. Either the injurie messed them up or they are over coaching guys that already know how to kick.

Back to back kickers with soft tissue injuries. Time to look in the mirror.
