Freeman takes he TO there to avoid the free play into the end zone. Can't fault him for that. The blame is 100% on the players for not being situationally aware - DON'T celebrate before the half, DO contest the fumble.

I think the argument is that USC wasn't going to get the spike off in time before the half ended.

It was certainly close, and I don't think MF wanted to chance giving them a free play for either an end zone shot or an easier field goal.

Yeah, it's hard to fault him. Worst case with the timeout, you give up 3. Worst case without the timeout, get caught with half your defense behind the LOS and ball in the most dangerous player in CFB's hands and nothing but green and WRs in front of him on a free play...

Scariest part of this game is that the defense might not be able to manufacture 3 more TOs. SC will adjust, and they will “get theirs”. The chess match between ND aggression vs. SC looking for quick hits/screens will be fun. Just need the offense to stand ok it’s own 2 feet for several possessions. D gets gassed and this could be squeaky bum time.
