Y'know with the range of names that are being thrown out there for the scUM job, it must be embarrassing to be English/DeBord....

To think that a school that has had about 4 generations of promotion from within would consider Hoke over you? Woof

What is their latest list of "potential head coaches"?

I think they might be better off promoting someone from within to act as interim head coach until next year. the last thing i think they want to do is ink a 4yr contract with their 8th choice and get a guy who doesn't have the name recognition or recruiting potential to keep them in it year after year. On second thought, do just that Michigan.

On everyone of the scUM boards they are sure that Miles will be the next HC. To me that would be the biggest mistake either Miles or scUM could make. The man came out and flat out stated that he would be the HC at LSU next yr. How in the world does scUM or Miles think going into a top recruits home is going to play out when he will have proven that his word means nothing. If he goes to scUM you can't trust a thing coming out of his mouth.

Saban has done it multiple times. So far it's not hurting his recruiting (that we know of).

But you are right, I wouldn't trust his word and it wouldn't make sense for recruits to do so either.

I thought he signed an extension with LSU?... Honestly Miles may be the best they can do this year but I don't think he will be much of a candidate.

At LSU they have a bevy of in-state talent, and the few players they bring in from out of state are generally local like Texas and Florida guys. I don't see scUM having a similar pattern in terms of who they bring in. Miles is another gambler too, and (IMO) not of the same caliber as Charlie. Some of his decision making this year was... strange to say the least.

Personally I think Marty Schottenheimer would be the best hire they could make - the guy is the epitome of what they are looking for. Sort of boring, but consistent and with a very solid NFL resume. I could just see him on the scUM sideline. To me, Miles seems like (if he goes there, and I don't think he does) someone who might make a flash but never really pan out.

As for the list:

Les Miles - Who the hell knows but clearly is/was scUM's number one target
Kirk Ferentz - Not interested
Greg Schiano? - Not interested, might be mutual
Brady Hoke? - Put his name out there, doubt it's mutual
Ron English - Apparently he is option E
Jim Tedford - scUM hopeful but there is no way this happens
Marty Schottenheimer - Saw it on RocksHouse... would be a good move but I doubt it happens

Miles was the number one target for most Michigan fans. However, there all kinds of rumors going around that there were some "issues" that the Michigan AD and President found troubling with Miles to the point that he was not originally contacted and was NOT one of their primary targets. Now that their primary targets have declined and all hell is breaking loose with the fan base, they contact Miles but probably to late to make a difference.

My thoughts on the topics near the bottom of this thread:

1. Les Miles to Michigan, so what if he contradicted himself on TV. I wonder what any of us would do if we were out intervieiwing for a new job and had to answer questions about it to the media? Does it hurt his credibility? I don't think so. Nick Saban seems to be doing just fine and his denail was much stronger.

2. Shottenheimer is an interesting one. I tend to shy away from NFL types myself. And I honestly see him landing another NFL job if he wants it. Look how much worse the Chargers are without him. But he is definitely an interesting name.

ESPN is reporting that Bobby Petrino will resign from the Head Coach of the Atlanta Falcons and will take the Arkansas job.

Man I find that hard to believe... I mean I know they are wretched this year but.... to have your only year as an NFL HC be that and then retire for a mid-level college program? Maybe the Falcons administration is awful and he can't stand them... I just don't get it.

Also Stone - I didn't include Marvin Lewis because he said he had heard nothing of the reports of any interest... so I don't think it's anything more than fan-daydreaming. I think he would do well at the college level - good scheming (amazing D at BMore during his D-Coordinator days) and though he has discipline levels in the NFL I think he would do ok with younger guys. But sure I mean I see Tedford as another over-active-imagination candidate but who knows.

Arkansas lands Petrino.

Alabama lands Saban.

Florida lands Meyer.

UNC lands Butch Davis.

South Carolina lands Spurrier.

We get Weis.

Not to bash Weis, but how can these schools attract top talent coaches that have proven themselves at the collegiate level while ND must take a chance on an a coach with zero HC experience? What do those schools have to offer that ND doesn't?

Well... Alabama was in a bind (if I recall) and was lucky to get Saban (or unlucky, whatever) at the last minute.

These schools have next-to-nothing academic requirements and can feed off an area that is regarded as having a lot of high school talent. They also tend to make a ton of money (I know this isn't applicable as an argument against ND). I'd say it's overall just a nice-looking job area. Considered a tough conference, so you can prove how amazing you are as a coach. Make a lot of money. Low standards so you have more freedom to bring in kids that are idiots but can play foobaw.

We didn't exactly strike out with Weis; He was our second choice. Was Ty our first choice when he got hired?

I have no idea if Ty was outr first choice, but he was a bad choice. I have now been a fan long enough to see ND hire:

Faust
Holtz
Davie
Willingham
Weis

I am beginning to think that the admin is clueless as to what a good coaches resume looks like or they simply aren't able to attrct top talent. Weis is still an unkown commodity. Each side of the Weis debate has some pretty good points. I just don't happen to think he was a good hire.

Bobby Petrino has resigned from the Atlanta Falcons and has agreed to become the coach at Arkansas. Sounds like he called a meeting and told his assistants that he was leaving and walked out.

Ty was nowhere near the first choice. O'Leary was first. Others included Jon Gruden, Steve Mariucci, Mike Bellotti, Barry Alvarez. I'm going on memory, so anyone can feel free to correct me or add to the list.

Oh yeah, AR took a gamble on another failed NFL coach. He quit the NY Jets w/ less than a year under his belt, too. His name: LOU HOLTZ.

CW had a pretty good (and longstanding) reputation as a NFL OC. Normally, they're not too dumb when they get a rep like that. It's kinda early to start doubting him with a class that Ty left him.
I'll tell ya how I feel in two years, cause until then......we won't really know.
