Notre Dame Stadium To Install New Turf

Nov. 20, 2007

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - There's a new grass football field in the works for Notre Dame Stadium.

Workmen this morning began tearing out the current turf, which has been in use for five seasons. On Friday, they will begin installation of the new grass field, with that portion of the project expected to be complete at some point next week.

The sod will come from a Colorado turf farm, the same supplier as for the recently installed new grass field at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

Overseeing installation of the new field is George Toma, considered the country's leading authority on grass athletic fields. He has overseen grass installation and preparations for all the NFL Super Bowls played to date.

The new Notre Dame Stadium field will be ready for use by the Irish during spring football drills in April 2008.

NDOM...
Thanks for actually printing off the article to fill in some details. I just kind of referenced that it was happening in the first post. Glad to know the guy is trusted and is probably the best there is.

So we are getting new grass and not field turf? I prefer grass as long as you do not play high school and pro games on it. Here in Nashville the Titans field looks terrible b/c TSU plays on some Saturdays. If one team plays on it then grass is better. As far as traditon goes grass is just classic. What is next we put up a jumbotron and put adds all over the stadium?

Field turf is not the same as Astro turf. Field Turf was designed to replace astroturf fields as there had been so many injuries doe to cleats catching or stepping on loose seams ans so forth. I believe that the Colts has one of the last old style artificial turfs in the NFL and switched to the field turf about 2 yrs ago (?). It still is not grass, but it is far more forgiving than the old astroturf surfaces. Also, when you see takcles or slide on field truf, you see black particles fly, that is a ground up type of rubber which helps it to be softer than the old Astro turf...

Yes, it's already done. They did it last weekend while everyone was on break. The SBT had some pictures of it taking place. They brought in the guy that's in charge of the Super Bowl's fields.

Our high school put in Sprinturf. The only problem I ever heard them having was that in the warmer months it was extremely hot. There are these little fillings made of rubber that heat the turf up tremendously. Of course we are in Atlanta. The soccer team hated it because the balls bounced differently and faster but the football team loved it. And it saved a ton of money.
