I like the fact that he said he always wanted to be at ND and I think we know how the guy that wanted to be here last year is doing now. Congrats Jonas glad to have you at ND.

Huge day for Jonas as he led his team to a first round playoff win.

Gray leads Country Day to win

October 28, 2007

Birmingham Detroit Country Day received the second half kickoff ahead 13-0, and had a chance to go up big. On the first play from scrimmage, tailback Jonas Gray danced around, then went backwards trying to find a seam.

He lost 10 yards on the play, effectively killing the drive. Visiting Detroit Douglass got the ball with decent field position, drove 62 yards and cut the lead to 13-8.

"I was trying to do too much," Gray said.

But his teammates didn't say much to him after he returned to the sideline.

"Because I've done it before and I made big plays out of it," Gray said.

He eventually made the big plays Saturday, as Country Day held on to win, 28-20,in a Division 4 first-round playoff game.

Gray's 49-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter gave his team a 21-8 lead and his 95-yard touchdown run late made it 28-20. In both, he went untouched on sweeps to the right side.

On the afternoon, he rushed for 223 yards and three scores on 21 carries.

Country Day (8-2) will play the winner of the Detroit Crockett and Pontiac Notre Dame Prep game, which ended late Saturday night, in the next round.

The Yellowjackets scored early when quarterback Stefan Ede hit Patrick Leary for a 16-yard touchdown and extended their lead after Gray punched in a 2-yarder in the second quarter.

The Hurricanes, which improved from 0-9 last fall to 6-4 this year, chipped into Country Day's lead after Eddie Hogan ran one in from 14 yards on the third quarter drive after Gray's gaffe.

After Gray's second touchdown, Hogan scored again, this time seven yards. Hogan took over primary ballcarrier duties in the third quarter after starter Joseph Edmounds twisted an ankle, and finished with 82 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.

"He played big for us," Douglass coach Andre Harlan said. "He's normally a fullback. Today he had to play tailback and did a hell of a job."

Future Irish running back Jonas Gray carried 16 times for 122 yards, half coming on his first touch, a 62-yard gain, and scored the game's only touchdown as Detroit Country Day topped Crockett (Detroit) 7-0, writes the Detroit Free Press.
Gray did not sound entirely satisfied after the contest, "16 carries for 122 yards - that's a good day. I don't think it was so much them doing a good job, it was more offensive production. We had some missed assignments."

Get used to it Jonus. You are coming to the land of missed assignments next year.

The guy had 122 on 16 carries, and then he threw his offensive line under the bus by complaining about missed assignments? That seems kind of odd.

I thought that was a bit odd too, although he seems like a pretty positive kid so I am hoping it isn't quite meant that way. Maybe he meant they should have played better all around? One thing seems to be the case with that team - if someone can shut down the running for Jonas, they can sure shut that offense down.

Ya, the way he said that I don't think he was throwing anyone under the bus. He was just saying as an offense they could have played better.

Country Day 24, Milan 6: Yellowjackets slow Spears

November 11, 2007

BY CHRIS LAU

Birmingham Detroit Country Day's Jonas Gray is speed and power. Milan's Ronald Spears is elusiveness and finding holes. Both star running backs are the focus of their teams' offensive units.

"I knew if we stopped their running back, we'd have a chance to win the game," Country Day coach Dan MacLean said.

Country Day did win, 24-6, at home Saturday in a Division 4 regional championship. They'll play defending champion Zeeland West in the semifinals next Saturday at Olivet College.

The Yellowjackets didn't stop Spears, but they contained -- if that's the right word -- him. Spears rushed 30 times for 157 yards, giving him 295 carries and 2,501 yards on the season. He also had a 31-yard score, a highlight-reel play where he spun away from several would-be tacklers.

"He's had an unbelievable season," said Milan coach Steve Robb, whose team finished 9-3. "That run you saw for a touchdown, we're used to that. But we're used to seeing that three or four times a game."

Country Day (10-2) spent the week preparing for Spears. It used scout-team running backs Lee Bailey and Troy Woodland to imitate Spears.

And then on Saturday, the team's best tacklers -- linebackers Kenny Demens and Ted Brady -- eyed Spears the entire game.

"Basically, we had a really good week in practice," Brady said. "Jonas demonstrated leadership, kept everyone focused. He talked about how we had to keep hitting (Spears)."

Gray had quite an afternoon, too. He rushed 26 times for 167 yards and two touchdowns. The Yellowjackets also got a Stefan Ede-to-Patrick Leary 24-yard touchdown completion and a 30-yard field goal from Beaudy Pyett.

That's ch. 636 for those of you with Direct TV.

Jonas went out a few min ago with what seems like a minor injury that hsa slowed him a bit but he has come back in and is continuing to run pretty well. Although it doesn't appear as though he's at full speed he's showing good quickness, balance and vision.

DCD just turned the ball over on downs and they are out of TOs, so it looks like they're going to lose 21-7. Jonas currently has 132 yards rushing and 1TD.

CDC gave Jonas one last carry on the last play of the game, but of couse what else would happen to a ND recruit on a play like that other than getting injuried. Nothing else would happen. That's right, Jonas injuried his left should on the last play of the season. They didn't say how bad it was, but he imeadiatly grabbed it when he got up and he let it hang low and tried not to move it as he went over to the trainers.

I went to the game last night to watch Jonas Gray, and I was impressed with some things, and not impressed with others. He has a good burst, very good quickness, and is kind of shifty. He goes down way too easily, especially on first contact but then again the Marine City defense always had 11 guys in the box. I think he could be a very good back for ND in time.

I was very impressed with Marine City's QB Brandon Kay. His numbers may not have been great, but he has a gun and can move very well. He is a Cincinati commitment, and I honestly think is every bit of the prospect Dayne Crist is. I don't think he is as good right now, but their size is similar, and the skills they bring are very similar.
