Hi, I am new and would like to comment on the game. I did not like when CW put Zib in the game at QB. I know that ZIB was having fun but I thought it was a slap in the face of Duke. I also felt that when the score was 28-0, more of the underplayed seniors and walk-ons should have gotten to play. ND is suppose to be a class act-and I don't feel that that was.
I might be in the minority here, but I feel that Evan Sharpely earned the right to play this season over Claussan.

Fair enough. Maybe I'm biased, but I have a couple Dookie friends. Also have watched a fair amount of Dook basketball. Anytime you can show that bunch of snotty Dookies disrespect, I say, DO IT !!

Right.......God knows the Dookies are model citizens to other teams that come into their arena. I say we take care of our own guys (and the feelings of OUR guys), before we worry about how it is taken. Frankly, Dude should be happy they got to come to our venerable stadium. :)

"Hey guys; lets consult Michigan and USC for advice." The majority of programs seek advice from NFL coaches. It's not a big deal. Going back to New England is what he needs to do. It's silly to think he'd go otherwise; I'm sure he has discussed this with his staff.Just because he's struggling to adjust doesn't mean its his NFL mentality or stubborn attitude. This is what programs do in the offseason.

Meh... Guess I am just biased because I dislike Duke (vitale could be on fire running around and I wouldn't bother to tell him to stop, drop, and roll).

In all honesty, maybe it is disrespectful to Duke. Maybe it was disrespectful for Georgia to rush the field when they scored on Florida. Sometimes you gotta be selfish. This wasn't about Duke, it was about Notre Dame and someone who stuck around when its pretty safe to assume it wasn't going to be helping him (probably dropped a lot of moolah off of any NFL contract). I would have a real objection if this were Navy or AFA, or maybe even a traditional rival. But the game was clearly over - accepted by both sides as they sent in backups, and it was something nice for someone who gave back to the team.

You can't make everyone happy. I'd rather have a nice moment for one of our guys than any Kumbaya-circle.

Oh and GO TERPS (bball).

20 questions from the Duke game

20 questions from the Duke game

(Via the Roundup.)

I’ll have a proper recap of the Duke game some time this weekend, but for now here are twenty questions that have been on my mind:
  1. Is THAT what a D-I football team is supposed to look like? ‘Cause I almost thought it was …
  2. Is it just me, or does Duke head coach Ted Roof look an awful lot like Steve Martin?
  3. They were saying “Huuuuuuughes,” right?
  4. What in the world does Dan Wenger do with his helmet? It looks like he’s been using it as a hammer. Do they not repaint these things after losses?
  5. What’s up with all the empty seats at midfield? Do these people not even have the courtesy to find somebody who’ll take their tickets? What an embarrassment …
  6. Did anybody else find it morbidly fitting that Travis Thomas ended his Irish career with a fumble?
  7. How serious was Tom Zbikowski about the whole quarterback thing? Can you imagine how annoying that must’ve been for Charlie Weis to put up with his pestering for three straight years?
  8. Has there ever been a more absurd penalty call than the excessive celebration flag on John Carlson for giving the “first down” signal?
  9. I don’t mind instant replay, but do they really have to take so long with it? It was OBVIOUS that Thaddeus Lewis hadn’t fumbled that ball; why spend ten minutes coming to a decision?
  10. Does anybody else feel a weird desire for the NBC contract to come to an end, just so that we could see a halfway competent broadcast crew during a home game?
  11. Speaking of NBC, what in the world was that sideline reporter wearing? He looked like he was off to give a seminar at Cambridge.
  12. Did it seem to everyone like we saw a lot less of Asaph Schwapp?
  13. How in the world is this team going to find ways to get carries for all three of their tailbacks next year?
  14. Can someone get Weis a handkerchief?
  15. And maybe a field goal kicker as well?
  16. So, Notre Dame > Duke > Northwestern > Michigan State > Penn State > Wisconsin > Michigan > Illinois > Ohio State, right?
  17. How satisfying was it to see plays run out of the shotgun, and without the ball flying over the quarterback’s head?
  18. Wasn’t it great to see Chris Stewart get so much playing time?
  19. And how about Kerry Neal and Brian Smith as the two starting outside linebackers?
  20. Doesn’t winning feel wonderful?

Friggen hilarious. I SAID THE EXACT SAME THING! Female next to me said "Oh he has such pretty eyes!" I said "hmf he looks like Steve Martin." Female said "Well, yeah, kinda..." I left the room and turned on comp. Figgered if I had to listen to how pretty the coaches eyes are, I'd rather read some stranger's post on the internet.

You go with the Lou Holtz offense. In 1990, Lou had a backfield of:

Ricky Watters (TB)
Tony Brooks (TB)
Dorsey Levens (TB)
Walter Boyd (TB)
Rodney Culver (FB)
Jerome Bettis (FB)
Ryan Mihalko (FB)
Kenny Spears (FB)

4 deep at both positions, and ALL 8 of them were monogram winners.

8. Yes, but don't even get me started
9. Oh well, NBC takes 5 hours anyway might as well make the right call
10. DEAR GOD GET A NEW CREW AND START WITH NEW MAKEUP PEOPLE - Hammond is a stunt double for boy george
11.That guy was awful, he didn't even look at the players (I think he is a character from clue)
12. Yes but if it means more Hughes than stick to it
13. By not having so many 3-and-outs
14. awww - Thats what Charles jr is there for, handkerchief coordinator

You have to love ESPN's quality reporting...

Apparently we had a Bobby Parris, and a David Kamara on our team. Wow, who knew we had two sets of Identical twins in our recieving core. If taht's that way it's going to be I think we should at least get a Kamara clone out of the deal.

The '92 backfield was flat out loaded too

QB
1. Mirer
2. McDougal

RB
1. Reggie Brooks
2. Lee Becton
3. Jeff Burris

FB
1. Jerome Bettis
2. Dean Liddle (Was the record holder for the NCAA indoor 200m)
3. Ray Zellars

This is probably going to be a very unpopular thing to say but here goes. When Charlie put Zibby in at QB I thought it was really cool for Zibby, but I thought it was completely disrespectful to Duke. It was almost as if CW was rubbing it in there faces. I'm happy about the win, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear about poor sportsmanship on the part of ND in the media Sunday.

I don't think you can spend all day worrying about what an oppenent thinks is disrespectful. If they were winning at home, they would prolly have done the same thing. It's about the kids, not running up a score. This damn PC crap drives me crazy.

I agree Stoney. I was there so maybe I have a different take on it than some of you guys. To all of us that were left it was just a really fun an loose moment for everyone. The players, students, fans and coaches. It got everyone fired up, so much so that I think the excitement of the croud played a part in the two penalties, and Tommy Z had to give a motion to the croud to quiet them down. If you remember Tommy has been beggin CW do do this for several years. Plus it showed everyone that CW has a little more of a loose fun side than a lot of people thought. Overall it was just a really fun great moment for all involved. Personally I don't think it's anywhere close to what some coaches do when they throw up 70 or 80 points on 1AA schools or other teams from small confrences such as the Sun Belt, MAC, WAC, etc.

Along that line....
ND's last four National Championship QB's : Clements '73, Montana '77, Rice '88, McDougal '93 (we wuz ROBBED). Number of last 4 NC QB's in College Hall Fame: 0. All American's: 0. It's about the TEAM, not the QB.

yes...a win...a damn welcome win...don't care who it was against (they give scholarships too)...we came out in the second half with a fire i've not seen all year...i thought the o-line looked much better in the second half...jc looked as though he found some of brady quinns guts...hughes took advantage of the chance cw gave him (and will thus get more)...aa hit the middle a couple of times really hard...and the defense pitched a shutout (until cw gave some of the other guys a chance to be a part of the win)...i'm much happier with this win than i was with ucla's...now it's time to keep the "mo" going against stanford...love ya irish and cw

At first I thought that Duke might be P'OD about Zibby playing QB. Then I remembered it was Senior Day. I don't think it was meant as a slight. So, if it's not meant as one, you can't really take it as one. If you do take it as a slight, you are wrong.

As far as the TEAM concept goes. Anyone who thinks these guys aren't playing in a TEAM concept, didn't watch this game or see the end of it including the interviews.

Guys,
Do NOT worry about the RB issue. So many are saying that we will have too many RB's. Are you freakin crazy????????? We legitimately have 3 front line RB's at this time. There is plenty of carries to go around. Further, they bring different styles to the game. Plus, many forget, but James will already be a Junior next season. Ask several dozen other D-1 backs how happy that would be to get 30% of the carries in their Sophmore season like an Allen and Hughes will get next season. This is a wonderful problem to have. Finally, it only takes one play to get us down to two deep. Injury is the ultimate equilizer. I am happy to have 3 Horseman!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you play football in 1997 vs a visiting Aliso Niguel High School from SoCal? That was a year after I graduated. I believe we beat Warren.

My interpretation of Zibby playing QB: When he was QB, they ran the offense ND apparently practiced all summer (spread option - probably started at U of Houston bout 20 years ago). I'm thinkin that is the offense the players believed in, they probably believed in the QB that left, and they lost faith in CW early. This "team" is too inexplicably bad. I think that could be an explanation. (Not an insider, just watch ND on TV).

Maybe JC's flambouyant announcement turned off many on the team. I think the guy has Heisman potential, but physically he needs to improve upper body strength. His butt is bigger than his chest. He needs to not worry about "trying" to be a leader, and focus on being a QB. He will gain followers if his team believes in his ability as an athlete and decency as a person.

Weis needs to attend coaching clinics. Every football coach in the world at every level is glad to help his colleague. That's why they hold coaching clinics where they show their playbook, videos of their practices, techniques they stress, etc... Football is an open book. It is an extremely simple game. The hardest thing is to keep it simple, cuz certain coaches overthink when they think "It can't be THIS simple..." The question is, can you coach it? Can your athletes play as a team?. This team and head coach failed miserably this year. I'm hoping like hell they can improve.

Piyachi - to clarify why you da man: I actually kinda disagree with you more often than agree, but you have a certain way of writing or persuading that actually makes me consider the alternative. Hasn't totally worked yet, but you da man! ... lol
