I think there logo/symbol/mascot is a tree. I know they've changed it a couple of times because the Cardinals sued in federal court based on discrimination and civil rights violations.

They used to be the Indians, but changed their nickname a long time ago at the request of a American Indian stiudent group from the school so they kept the same colors and adopted one of their colors as their new nickname. That's why they are The Cardnial, not the Cardnials. They do however have some sort of spuce tree as their mascot. I know there were some years were their name was in limbo, so I'm not sure what the situation was then.

Stanford Cardinal refers to the color. Palo Alto (tall tree - seqouias) is where the school is located. The band is responsible for making the tree a "symbol" when they sarcastically used it in a performance while the school was seeking an alternative to "Indians" as the mascot.

I wondered about that myself a few years back, so I looked it up.

Yes it has been and I would also like to thank all the posters out there that have been loyal to the team and the site by keeping a level head about things no matter how fustrated you became at times and continuing to make this one of the best ND fan sites on the net. I'm not sure how long I would have lasted on a board that was filled with flamers and trolls. I was really happy for the players, and especially the Seniors that played hard untill the end. Today felt great. Congrats!
