Can ND get Lou back to be the linebacker or special team coach?

I would be curious to know what CW says in the locker room. That may be a developmental for him. Either what he says is kept private, is so boring I forget, or he lacks that motivational flare.

I loved how he got all dressed up in his old Notre Dame gear. But here's tthe best part... They have the number two team in the country losing to yet another unranked team and they spent a large part of the halftime talking a about a 1-9 ND team that is playing another 1-9 team. Yet they often try to claim ND is no longer relevant.

I'd much rather we just win games than be "relevant."

Bringing back Lou as an assistant is definitely not a bad idea. He'd be a good mentor for the players AND the coaches. I just have a gut instinct that Charlie would never bite the bullet there unfortunately. Folks would then be saying he's desperate and does not have the knowledge he needs to win today.

On another note, would Lou even accept a position back with ND?

I think we should bring him in as a pregame/halftime specialist... or motivation speaker... whatever he would prefer to be called.

I don't think CW would go for it, but I don't see why you wouldn't want someone with that much passion for ND around.

I don't think CW would go for Lou coming back either. I don't think it would be a great idea. Too much distraction... a no win situation for the program. Say Lou comes back and they start winning - well it was Lou who turned the program around. Say Lou comes back and they continue to lose - the program is finally dead for good.

I do however think CW needs to give serious thought to his coaching staff and reflect if the guys we have on staff are the guys ND should have. I don't know if CW prefers to have less experienced guys around, or if he cannot get the best assistants to come here, but our staff is not the caliber of staff ND should have, and for me this includes Corwin Brown. Your first DC role should not be at ND, especially when it is the head coaches first head coaching position.

I topic that is never talked about but which I think still haunts the program is losing Cutcliffe as OC before CW's first year. An experienced offensive mind and a guy who had familiarity with the college game like Cutcliffe alongside CW would have meant a lot the first 2 years and would be huge right now. I think the fans get real excited about CW and even more excited about bringing guys in like Corwin as DC, but I think if we look at the assistants staff they do not hold up to ND standards in talent and experience. One of the things that made Lou a good coach was the quality of assistants he had under him. I still argue that Davie was an excellent DC... a bad head coach, but a good DC.

I wonder if some of the problem with this team is that CW wants these guys to learn NFL scheme's and with the time you get with college kids it doesn't work. The O-line for three years have looked slower than other teams with lesser talent than ND and on defense guys have looked confused and they are not playing fast. I've heard from most of the ND guys that are in the NFL say what they are doing in the pro's is what they were being taught at ND under CW, hopefully the guys here now will understand what they are suppose to do and be able to apply it soon because if they can't why teach it.

Random thoughts....

- Lou Holtz was in the discussion to replace Ty if I recall correctly (or at least rumored to be considered in some circles)...I don't know how much truth there is to that account, but if he had come back I imagine we would see a very different ND team today...

- head-butting dogs comment made me spray coffee on my computer monitor...

- Weis as head coach / QB coach and eitehr gviing Haywood the reigns as OC or hiring a new OC would go a long, long way towards repairing some of what ails this team....IF

- A new O-Line coach and Strength and Conditioning Coach is brought in as well...

I just can't help myself...when I watch a team like Oregon or even Arizona play how I am dumbstruck by the apparent lack of speed Irish players show on the field! I don't for one minute believe that it is because they are all actually physically slow and plodding, but good lord - watched Cason for Arizona and was thinking to myself, "what makes him appear so much faster and fluid than Walls or McNeil?" Both Walls and McNeil were considered better "prospects" out of HS...yet Cason is one of the top DBs in the country and looked every bit the part in that game too...

I hope that Charlie and staff are taking notes of what other teams are doing out there because everywhere I look right now, teams with waaaaay less overall talent are playing a game that does not remotely resemble what I have seen from ND this year. There are actually open spaces on the field, spaces where a man carrying the ball appears to be able to move through very quickly. There are thes people called wide receivers, and for some reason they are able to run away from these other people called defensive backs and linebackers. But most dumbfounding of all, there is this really large collection of mammals called an offensive line and they appear to be able to do something called blocking that allows for all of those other thigns to happen....it is really an entertaining game! (I just can't wait to see Notre Dame start playing it again....)

I just can't believe on television we as fans can see things CW can't see in the game. Like the fact the air force safeties were cheating over on the snap of the ball. if you fake that quick out and the corner jumps it, you get a guy down the sideline with no one in 20 yards of him. just consider faking it charlie, you could have had a touchdown against air force with that (although the cb wasn't jumping it that I saw, but a good fake and he would have bit).

I can't see Lou wanting to come back. Too much stress, and probably not as high a salary as he's getting from ESPN.

Plus, who would they get to antagonize Mark May? Every other sportscaster out there is a bobblehead who will kiss USC's booty then turn around and poo poo ND.

I love that guy (Holtz) He has a passion for Notre Dame. I've seen a few of his pep talks this year but none with the heart like that one. He's something else!

I have an ESPN clip of him at the 07 Spring Game where he was an honorary coach. He takes ND football seriously. Hhe can still work a sideline. Also took Bruton (i think) aside after he dove into the endzone on an interception return.

Great point. I have heard that quite a bit too - "Why is ND getting so much attention when they are losing?" I love it. ND still gets headlines in sports sections across the country.

Thanks for posting the video Johnnd. Great speech. Lou is probably the greatest coach along with Knute. Lou's overall record is not as good because he took over average to losing programs and turned them into winners.

Damn. I just watched the video again. There was no pause in his speech. He knew what he wanted to say. He looks like he is where he belongs, in his Notre Dame coaching gear.
Glory years. He is one of the all time college coaching TRUE genius greats.

Has there ever been a team that is 1-9 that has gotten so much T.V time, it seems like they're on ESPN everyday. I do wish it was because the team was 10-0.

I think it is because Notre Dame is the weekend football hope of the steelworker, the secretary, the Catholic, the rich, the poor, the trenchdigger, the Mexican, the U.S., the Canadian, the Irish, the Polish, the crook, the lawyer, the butcher, the sargeant, the captain... Worldwide appeal. I think they represent the humble good guys. At least that is what ND football is to me.

Other teams can say the same thing, but they are not Notre Dame.

Acually it is a very common phenom. Like the Yankees & Cowboys. People HATE them as much as people LOVE them. That is why ESPN and others still discuss them when their record would seem to make them irrelevant. People revel in their misery and true fans can't help but still watch and care.

However, the tv ratings are down big time, so the losses are making them somewhat less relevant.
