The real gauge of recruiting success

I read this article on Scout and thought it worth sharing. The most significant point I take away from this is not to focus on stars. Yes it would be nice to claim the #1 recruiting class, but in the end the thing that matters most is we get the guys these coaches wanted. The fact that we end up with a top 5 class would just confirm that our coaches got the right players.

Good find. IMO, we need to land Robinson, Page, and another WR.(Walker,Robinson,or Baldwin) If we get Robinson, Page, and one of those WR's, we should have #1 recruiting class.

News paper's and other stuff is usually fine, but just post links to Scout, Rivals, and BGI articles.

BTW, I'm not sure if you guys caught it, but they confirmed the Jonas Gray offer in this article.

great article. boy i would love to land kenneth page. one of those nasty SEC lineman. him and robinson would complete this class with a runningback. baldwin would be icing the biscuits.

(gg, were do we stand with baldwin?)

From all the info I've heard ND is in his top two with Pitt. I've also herd some reports that he isn't fully academically qualified for ND, and most seem to think that, the hurdle here would be a higher SAT/ACT score. He also has quite a few local and family connections to Pitt, so I'd put them as the leader right now, but ND definately has a shot. They need to get him on campus for an official visit to have a better chance.

Right now we're in his top two with the other team being Pitt. Of all the recruits in this class he has the most upside. His stats are better the Calvin Johnson's were at the NFL Combine this year. I also think he is limited by the fact that he plays tight end at a high school that predominately runs the football. I think we have a good chance , but a lot of things could happen between now and NSD. The decisions by Harper, Robinson, and Walker may be a big factor in whether he is Blue and gold on the east side of Ohio or the west..

According to Colin Cowheard this morning (who said ten times he follows recruiting VERY closely) Scout and Rivals adjust their rankings to make ND look good since they know that sells magazines... the proof is in the pudding... they say ND recruits with Texas, SC and Florida... yet it is obvious on the field they do not have those kind of players..........................

I had to work on breathing exercises after that one...

The on campus visit is key. Last year I came out for my first game. I was ready to quit my job and enroll even though I already have a BA and JD. That was until my wife said no. I tried to reassure I would come home on all breaks, but she wasn't convinced.

Pete Carrol is no gauge for talent then. After Omar Hunter verbaled to us, USC offered him. I guess all the other teams that offered on the players that we seek just don't get it either.

Lets just see how the upcoming years play out when we have top 10 classes everywhere on our field... We'll go up against some of those teams and we'll see how well we match up.

So, do you guys think the positives in recruiting lately have been a result of the turmoil at Nebraska? I just find it extremely interesting that Jonas Gray decommited, Trevor Robinson is a big ND lean, and Blaine Gabbert has backed off his commitment as well. I'm no expert here, but I'm about 99% sure Callahan is out after this year. Not to take anything away from Charlie's recruiting skills, I just thought this would be interesting to share.

Alright, after looking at previous years recruiting rankings:
2004 - this years seniors
3- Florida State
4 - Miami
6 - Georgia
FSU and Miami are unranked and Georgia is 18(BCS).

2005 -
2 - FSU
4 - Tennessee
5 - Nebraska
7 - Miami
8 - Texas AM
10 - Georgia
FSU, UT, Nebraska, Miami, TAMU are all unranked right now, Georgia is 18.

2006 -
3 - FSU
4 - Georgia
5 - Texas
6 - Penn State
10 - Auburn
FSU is unranked, Georgia is 18, Texas is 19, Penn State is 25, and Auburn is 22.

So its obvious that rivals boosts FSU's rankings, Georgias rankings, and Miami's rankings too. Technically they have should have upperclassmen who are amazing, but they arent where some other teams are right now either. I think that guy is a crock of crap and he's just saying something like that to get ND fans angry... which obviously it has done to me.

Some are, but it also had a lot to do with all the visitors that were at ND last weekend, plus I think the ND student section is helping quite a bit. To tell you the truth I think they are helping win recruits with all the energy and loyalty they're bringing to the games.

I'm sure they probably make an impact. To see those kids stand up for the whole game, no matter what the score does impact people.

Great article.

Gets me excited to (hopefully) win these last few, put '07 on the shelve, and look forward to locking this class up in Feb.

The thing about Southern Recruiting that most do not consider is that FSU, GA, and Co do NOT get all their kids in school. They plan on some being partial qualifiers and some going to JUCO. We do not have that problem so I think we are underrated.

I thought about this during the summer when Spurrier was whining about his school expecting his athletes to be too smart. Do the recruiting sites go back and downgrade a school's class if members do not end up getting accepted to the school?

Found the answer to my own question: the answer is no, the recruiting sites do not remove the players who do not get accepted to their school from the recruiting class.

South Carolina had 31 commits last year, two were not accepted. They were Michael Bowman of Wadesboro, N.C., and Arkee Smith of Jacksonville, Fla. Both remain on the list of players in the 07 recruiting class.

Now, I don't know how much this would have dropped SoCarolina's class, since Bowman was a low 3-star and Smith a 2-star (Rivals), in a class of 31 other recruits. So removing those two players might drop the class down to #7 or #8 from #6.

The rank of any recruiting class would be more profoundly affected if the loss were 4- or 5-star recruits. I guess the not-so-smart 4- and 5-star players are smart enough to avoid that embarrasment and commit to the other USC or LSU so they are guaranteed acceptance.

I am pretty sure that when a player "resigns" with a class, ie does not make grades in 2006 then signs again in 2007, the school gets "double credit" I think Ole Miss has gotten a 5 Star for Jerell Powe for the past 3 years and he has never played a down.

Yes they do, at least in some cases. Rivals jumped ND from 8th to 7th over Auburn after last year's class signed because almost 1/3 of Auburn's 30 man class couldn't qualify.
