Hi lurker here, first time posting.

Been reading a lot of back and forth about Weis, how great he is, how awful he is, etc.

I was just wondering what folks thought about his attitude. He's obviously not a catch more flies w/ honey type of guy, and I'm not a huge fan. I think I'd be more apt to root for the guy if he wasn't such an asshole or if he could figure out how to win. See, you can be an asshole when you're winning, but when you stink to high heaven, it just makes you look like a buffoon.

I've heard talk from people on campus, that this is not just an issue w/ the press, or on the football field, but off as well. (See most recent incident involving trying to get his kid reinstated at St. Joe's). I've also heard some things from former players about restricted access to the program and current players, which I think is a huge disservice to the kids as well as the program.

Just my .02, curious what others think, or have heard.

And what of all of the former players who have actually met him and say he is a great guy? Have you ever witnessed Weis being an "asshole"? And I think 19 wins in two years could be construed as "figuring out how to win". I'm not trying to hold Weis up as any kind of genius, and he has certainly screwed the pooch this year. So what? If he wins 9 games next year, all of this will be meaningless. So let's wait and see what happens.

Look, I’m not an advocate for the university to fire Weis, just commenting on the fact that he needs to learn to be more diplomatic. One thing that ND has always managed to project, regardless of the number in the W column is class and decorum. I don’t see that in CW, he comes off as brash and condescending. Again, that works if you’re winning. When you claim to be an offensive genius with a decided schematic advantage over every opponent, then get stomped on a consistent basis, and haven’t had a “great” win during your tenure, it just makes you look sad.

I don't want a "modern day diplomat" as a football coach. Back in the day, guys like Parseghian and Devine were isolated from being "brash and condescending" because media types were not as aggressive as they are today. Look at some of the ridiculous questions Weis is asked, during his pressers.........."Charlie, is the QB change based more on one guy's ability to make plays, or the other guy's inability to do so?" They spend a fair amount of the pressers trying to get Weis to throw someone under the bus. You say he is brash, I say he is confident in his ability to coach. Before the BC game, one of the reporters asked him what he thought about the ND-BC rivalry, from a football standpoint, considering that the game has tended to ruin one team or the other's season, in the past. The brash response would have been, "It's our turn to ruin BC's season". Weis' response? "Boston College is not going to ruin our season" He as much as admitted that this is a bad season for ND. That's brash?

That's just my take on it. Others may disagree. That's fine with me. I think all of us want the same thing: a winning team.

Would you have posted this if ND was winning? Why are you, today, concerned with anyone's attitude?

See, you can be an asshole when you're winning, but when you stink to high heaven, it just makes you look like a buffoon.

Agree.

Have you walked in his shoes? If you have, state who you really are.

I've also heard some things from former players about restricted access to the program

Can't they afford their own gym? Maybe they should wake up and do pushups and situps for free...

Just my .02, curious what others think, or have heard.

Rumormongerer.

Does signing your alias make you feel substantiated?

For those who think Weis is too arrogant and can't admit mistakes, or is generally an asshole, i would refer you to yesterday's press conference. And really, pretty much all the press conferences. Watching them on tape, I'm not sure anyone could seriously think he believes he knows everything.

Diplomatic to what? He needs to learn how to win this year. Today is a rather important time in someone's life.

I would work for a brash man that is honest with me and cares about what he is doing. Losers rely on decorum.

I like Knight as well. His demeanor sucked, but his kids graduated, and respect him for the most part.
CW is not there to be a loveable celeb (see poodle), he's there to recruit the best that are the right fit for ND, and to get the most out of them.
I don't see him acting the asshole or know it all at the pressers. Rather, he seems on top of things, and fairly reflective.
Far from perfect, I think he realizes that he has some things left to learn. Example.....look how the recruiting fiasco went last year, and how he adjusted accordingly. I'd say that has gone well thus far.

As one Knight fan to another, and a Jersey boy myself, I understand the brash stuff. However, this is a time for humility, and Charlie was a little late to get that message. Also, he needs to lighten up on the bodyguard routine.

I think that Charlie learned an awful lot about how different it is to develope a very young college team this year that he obviously did notknow going into the season. His recent admission that he might have fouled up by not having more hitting in the summer was a good start on the PR front.

Basically, the job is the best, and toughest, job in football. No one is perfect at all aspects of it. 9-3 next year will help, to be sure. 2009, though, badly needs to be a NC run.

Who are you, Charlie's wife? You sure seem to be on his dick.

Like I said, I don't want the guy fired, I hate this trend of changing coaches at the first sign of smoke. That said, I don't feel like the canonization of Saint Charlie is justified and he's not above criticism.

I hope we all get to see that. Until they get it done on the field, it's all talk.

This is how you started, with a passive-aggressive personal attack on the coach to include his family. Way out of line if you ask me, and you did ask for thoughts.

You sure did turn a 180 quickly.

His recent admission that he might have fouled up by not having more hitting in the summer was a good start on the PR front.

I believe he's been very forthright about mistakes he's learned from. Most coaches are too stubborn to admit this. Weis doesn't get as much credit b/c he's seen as sarcastic & cocky.

He admitted his mistake in preparation for the Fiesta Bowl his first season. He admitted his mistake in allowing recruits to give "silent verbals" during last year's process when he was ultimately burned by a few players.

Add the fact that he can laugh at himself and doesn't take his expected anger at losing out on the reporters at his presser & I think he could be a lot worse.
