I can't wait to see what type of game Golden has.!!! I am predicting 6 catches 119 yds and 2TD!!!

Realistically, I am expecting Tate to have a mediocre game, based on being double covered on almost every play. Probably one or two big plays, two or three other catches for solid gains but nothing spectacular. I do, however, expect Carlson and Parris to have their biggest numbers of the season, aided by the attention given to Tate. That's assuming the O-line continues to give the QB(s) time to throw the ball.....

I disagree about Tate. I think at the moment as go-route-golden, he is a boom or bust player. He will either have more catches that are 30+ yards, or nothing much at all. Since UCLA has some speed on D I think it might be a quiet day for him, but hey I hope I am wrong. If Tate can simply draw the double-coverage then he is having a good day helping out the rest of the O. Also with his Samardzija-like focus and hands he is a legitimate red-zone threat. Prediction: 2 catches, 64 yards, 1 TD.

One angle I had not previously considered is.......how tall are UCLA's starting corners and safeties? One thing that Tate showed, in his two huge catches against Purdue, is great concentration and focus on the ball. He doesn't necessarily have to be a big tall guy to go up and get a jump ball, with those kind of skills. As long as there is no huge height mismatch, he may be able to have pretty good success on those types of balls. The downside is that there is a VERY elevated risk of turning the ball over on those types of throws. So you really can't call those plays, in a tight game, or from negative points.

True but you know what kind of a gambler Weis is. If he thinks that Tate has a shot at it he will let him try it out at least early on in the game. 5-9 and 5-11 as of the UW game. So if go-route Golden takes on that 5-9 corner along the left side I have a good feeling about the outcome.

I'm sure that Tate isn't going to be double-covered; ND has too many other wide receivers who can hurt you. There will probably be some safety help, but I don't think they'll double-up on him.

I'm not certain, but I'm betting the UCLA gameplan will be to take Tate out of the game using double coverage, keep everything else in front of them, and just plan on outscoring the Irish. And, truth be told, I think that plan is a good one. I hate to say it. But, based on ND's inability to stop the run, and their propensity for allowing teams to march down the field throwing underneath stuff; I would be thinking I can probably score on almost every possession, if I was UCLA. But, then again, no one is offering me a head coaching job at the High School level, let alone D-IA.

Well the box score says 1 rec for 0 yards. Bust night I guess, but he was drawing a lot of attention and that's good for everyone else.

yeah it seemed like they made sure that he would not beat them deep, with safety help over the top when he was in the game.

Someone to take up a double team and get other guys in one on one is a good thing, that will help out this team.

there was a pass interference call when they threw to him once and when they tried that end around, there was a facemask call so even when the stats don't show it, good things happen when you get the ball to golden lol

Haha that was pretty cool. The best thing about having a guy like Golden is the percieved threat he imposes. Just like Jeff opened things up for Rhema and Carlson, I can see Tate in the years to come opening up defenses for our other guys like Ragone or Parris.

Finally the threat of a deep speedy reciever...the rest of the offense will really benefit from what this kid is capable of doing.

I'm assuming you are faculty at PJPII? Just passed there today going to rivergate. I think I'm going to try and come to one of your home games to see Wesley play. What would be a good game on your up coming schedule to attend?

Hey Gold and Blue,

Are you gonna be able to make the game tommorrow night here at JPII at 7:00? If not it's gonna be on the radio on 104.5 ESPN the Zone. Wesley may have a big game. Although we are struggle at 0-7, we are playing a team that is 5-1 and has 2 pretty good backs, but if we play as hard as we did last week it could get interesting. Our next home game is next Friday, Oct. 19, and will be Homecoming and our last Home game of the year...

Can you say Rocket 2.0

Hopefully he develops into that, right now I'd have to say he's more like Matt Sheldon if I had to think of recent Irish players. The speedy deep threat that makes team watch him and is good for a few long passes each game.

I'm not sold on Tate yet. I've tried to watch, when the camera angles were there, and this kid doesn't know how to run a pass route to save his life. That's something that certainly can be taught. But, until he shows me that he can learn, I'm going to be skeptical of him. Can he run a fly pattern? Absolutely. But he's going to have to develop into more of a wide receiver before any Defensive Coordinator really worries too much about him. I'm just hoping he has the work ethic and drive to really blossom. The kid obviously has a lot of God given talent.

I can assure you Golden HAS the "drive" and "work ethic":)

Today the announcers said he was converting from RB to WR... i thought he was always a WR but he was great at every other position too. Am i wrong?

Yeah, he played RB in HS, and then converted to WR in his switch to college ball. I'm guessing that must have been what they were referring too.
