What is Clausens status?

I am curious if anyone knows what Clausens status is? I know he had elbow surgery, I have heard its his throwing elbow and I've heard it his other elbow. CW seems to be playing this close to his vest. Its seems to me JC played his senior year hurt and may have injured himself worse than anyone knows. Which makes the Crist recruiting more interesting. He may feel he really has chance to take this team from JC. Just throwing some ideas against the wall and seeing what sticks.

According to Weis

According to Weis

Jimmy Clausen was out there practicing and would be capable of “slinging it 30 or 40 times” against Georgia Tech if he was the starter.

They showed hin on ESPN, although they didn't show him throw a pass. He looked healthy and there wasn't anything on either elbow.

I caught the tale-end of that ESPN coverage. I concur with you ... I think that Sharpley starts against GT, barring any unforeseen injury or something of the sort.

Head Coach Charlie Weis Press Conference Transcript - 2007 Notre Dame Football Media Day :: Irish head coach meets with the media to preview 2007 season.

This is what CW said about Sharpley:
COACH WEIS: "Evan - let's just say it like this: Without going into a big, complex thing, you have Jimmy on one end, you've got Demetrius on the other end, and Evan is kind of in the middle. That's the easiest way for me to say it. Let's just say that Evan is kind of a cross between Demetrius and Jimmy. That would be the easiest way for me to explain it because I'm not looking for a jack-of-all-trades, and a master of none. I'm looking for somebody that can actually do enough stuff where we can win."

As far as Clausen's health---i think he is fine. i can't remember where i read it but CW said JC could play today if the season started today. the question that i have about JC is: if his quarterback coach in high school compared him the lebron james of football, wouldn't he be dominating in practice and be the clear favorite starter??

Sure, he may be able to dominate the practice physically, but Weis' playbbok isn't as easy as learning where to apply a few pick and rolls. Clausen has to learn the mental part of the game first; it isn't all about 40 times and yards per throw.

i think that CW will use a mix of them in the first game, if anything, it'l be with sharply starting off, but clausen and jones trading off throughout the game. CW said that he's not looking for a jack of all trades and a master of none, right after saying that sharply isn't as good as passing as clausen, or as good at running as Jones - he's in the middle, decent, but not great. I think that it might be a tag team of JC and DJ.

No

No

Weis said that he is not in favor of using multiple QB's. All 3 QB's are different and he has to tailor the offense around that ONE QB and stick with it. You cannot stick with one offense if the QB's are rotating in and out with different strengths and weaknesses. Weis is not like that. Same goes with the RB's. He will choose one to carry the bulk of the load just like Darius did the past 2 years and then maybe give Aldridge or Allen a snap or two just to give Thomas a breather. But thats it.

Baptism by fire baby. ND's '09 National Championship run begins with Georgia Tech this year. Jimmy needs to be thrown in to the pressure cooker right away and has to be forced to deal with it. Think of the pressure that he will have to deal with when ND makes thier title run in the future and all the haters like May and Cowherd come out and bash ND week in and week out. Clausen has to learn to handle the challenges and pressure that comes along with leading the Irish and there is no better way then getting the kid's feet wet right off the bat.

This isn't the NFL where Charlie has the luxury to sit the kid knowing that he will be the face of the franchise for the next 10 years. If Jimmy is what everyone is saying he is, what Charlie believes he can be and what all Irish fans hope that he will become then the kid should be prepared and ready to start from day one.

Ultimately Charlie is the guru and will do what is the best for his players and the team in the long run, but if we are recruiting top notch 5 star QBs to be the leaders of our teams then I can't believe Charlie would go after those that need time on the bench to prepare and need to be sheltered from the challenges of college football. This is Notre Dame, the Charlie Wies Era Notre Dame, so I have faith in Clausen that he is smart enough and strong enough to absord the offense and execute right away.

IMO, yes, ND is going to be favorite for the national title next year, but this year is going to be a very exciting year to watch b/c the players are hungry are no one is giving them a chance (i hate you mark may and lee corso). anyways, about JC, i think he will not be the starter but he will be getting some playing time. the one who i think will be the odd man out is Jones. CW will be announcing his starter, or at least the top 2...and i think Jones will be out. i guess i should save this for another thread but do you think we would see a remake of the '03 season and Jones could transfer out???

I sort of agree with you ... ND being ONE of the favorites next year and JC not being the starter (at least the opening game or two). For some reason or another I have a feeling that Sharpley will be the starter initially, w/ JC working his way into the starting spot after a couple of games. I see Jones playing in games during "certain situations", therefore, not totally being odd man out. Actually, by the end of the season I could see Sharpley being odd man out as JC (and Jones) take the crux of playing time. Time will tell though!

In Charlie we trust!

I see Jimmie and Demetrius as the co-qtrbks the first year,,,just like Tebow and Leaks at Florida. And I expect Charlie will pick a single starting qtdrbk after the 5 or 6 game. Should be an interesting and exciting season. Can't wait for it to start.

I disagree Irish52, I can't see CW using a 2 QB system most of the time, In certain situations yes but not regularly. just my opinion

Interesting theory Irish52. I myself have pictured this in my mind. Without re-hashing the various scenarios...how do you visualize this? In which situations do you feel Demetrius will contribute? And do you feel that Jimmy will be the primary quarterback?

I myself have toyed with the thought of loading the backfield and utilizing the run option set with a more mobile QB? But then, I see this being effective only if we can do this consistantly, regardless of who is quarterbacking. Otherwise our opponents will come to understand that alternating QB's is for the purpose of running particular plays? In essense, tipping our hand?

I'm going to start sounding like a broken record, but in all honesty, if our O-line play does not improve, it's not really going to matter much who starts back there. Except for maybe Jones. If the O-line performs anywhere like they did last year, we're going to need a very mobile QB back ther running the show. As much experiance as we had coming back last year, they really underachieved in my opinion. In the middle, they absolutely got no push, therefore, we didn't have much of a running game. Young, while being a frosh had growing pains, which I expected, but R. Harris, I really felt, didn't play anywhere up to expectations. We can speculate and hypothesize all day as to who the starter will be, but without a much improved O-line, I just don't see it mattering all that much.

What you said...if our line does not improve. Hopefully Coach Weis's early analysis will prevail...and we will be much better than last year in this area.

I really hope so. I felt that BQ was on his back entirely too much last year. That's why I'm saying "if". It could turn into a long season "if" they don't improve on last year's performance. By all accounts, Mendoza has put the boys to work, let's see if it translates into them moving some asses off of the line of scrimmage.
