Here's something to chew on. It's rumored that Charlie visited spread offense genius Rich Rodriguez. The reasons are just speculation right now but we might see Jones in a spread situationally.

I guess one of the downers of following recruiting so closely is that you really feel bad when a good, talented kid who loves ND (Frazer) doesn't get to play.

Seems like a lot of people here are trying to read between the lines or color things with their own expectations. I'm willing to take Weis at his word: each of the three finalists showed enough and no one or two seperated themselves from the pack. It's interesting because it mirrors what almost everyone was posting here.

If the Georgia Tech game was tomorrow, it seems to me that Sharpley would be the starter. The pressure is on Jones and Clausen to show enough to _earn_ the starting spot. Weis obviously believes that they can.

I'm of two minds on the whole 'dual threat' idea. On the one hand, Weis has said directly that's not what he's going to do. On the other hand, the Patriots have always been good at adapting to the strengths of their players. Maybe the mad genius is curious to see what would happen if Tom Brady could run like Kevin Faulk??

It seems like everybody is secretly in the mind of Charlie Weis and knows what and why he's doing what he's doing. Here are some headlines of topics at the premium II that I can only read the headings and it says all that I even WANT to read.......

--Decision more about Weis than QBs--
--Charlie will earn his paycheck picking a QB--
--I dont agree with Charlie's desicion one bit--
--Reading Between the Lines of the QB Press Release--
--3 instead of two...I may know why--

..........No you don't know why, none of you do and nobody does. Wow all of that is annoying..........

Well gallup21 sounds like Frazer is likely to transfer according to his dad. Can't blame him, I would too.

http://www.cumberlink.com/articles/2007/05/30/breaking_news/breaking01.txt

"If the opportunity is out there and they come calling, he wants to play," David Frazer said. "He wants to play, he's a kid that wants to play. He's not going to run the scout team or do mop up duty, he wants to play."

i have no comment except for this. i know i was saying he wouldnt transfer, and his dad was telling me that...but that was before this happened, the "pick 3 leave Frazer out" part. im sorry if anyone thought i was trying to mislead them, i wasnt...trust me i want Zach to stay as much as anyone...but if he feels its the best for him to go, then i hope he wins the Heisman where he goes

if it makes anyone feel any better who thought i was trying to mislead them, i feel more shitty then anyone on this board right now

It seems alot of you seem to forget that Dayne Crist is on the way. I feel as bad for Frazer as the next guy, but I trust CW and will believe in his plan.

I feel bad for Frazer as well, but if he stays and wants to play, then what are his options? Under the last two coaches then he would probably be the starter since he might be the only good QB we would have. The problem (in a great way for us fans) is Weis is recruiting very good players and we are becoming deep.

As a fan, I have to believe Weis is looking out what is best for the team. If he says 3 QBs are in the running, then it will be an interesting time up to the start of the GT game.

Gallup, you shouldn't feel bad, you had the scoop at the time, things changed that's all. There really wasn't anything else Mr Frazer could have said as a supportive father, he had every faith in his son and his skills and coaching. I wish them the best in whatever they decide is best for their family. GO IRISH!!

A few thoughts on the announcement:

1. Gallup, it's okay man. You've really put yourself out there for Frazer and I don't think anyone is under the impression that you misled them. I think everyone was envisioning a two-deep scenario, and a three-deep situation changes everything. I would imagine that the QBs were under this impression as well until fairly late in the process. This sort of curve is similar to the one thrown at Trattou that ultimately led him to Florida. If Zach opts out for a different school, good luck to him. He's a good kid by all acounts and I think everyone will follow his career.

2. It's tough to watch a well-liked player like Frazer get left behind. We're happy for the guys that made it, but sad for the one that didn't, but that's the nature of competition. Ultimately, a scholarship is not an entitlement to play but affords a chance to compete. This is the cost of program improvement.

3. Inasmuch as Weis' decision to go with three QBs should be taken at face value, I can't help but wonder at a change like this. My opinion, for the 2 cents that it is worth, is that the passing game did not establish itself clearly enough in the Spring to clearly put pass-oriented quarterbacks like Clausen and Sharpley out in front and completely eliminate DD. If the receivers and the passing game is suspect coming out of Spring, it would be foolish to write off a dual-threat quarterback that can tuck the ball and run to make plays. From this decision, I feel that the 2007 Fighting Irish offense has yet to establish its identity. I don't think it will until the fall when the team goes full throttle and the freshman come in, providing Weis with a complete team look. Until that happens, all options are on the table.

4. My gut tells me that Sharpley will start, but I see two senarios playing out in the fall and over the first few games. Scenario 1 is that the passing game does not get established and the line remains suspect due to inexperience, at which point I see DD backing up Sharpley and getting into the game due to the intangibles he brings to the table. If this happens, Weis will keep Clausen out this season to allow the receiver corps time to get built up to accomodate a pass offense. Frankly, it would be wise to keep a talented pass-oriented QB like Clausen out of harm's way during a transitionary period like this and save him for a time when the entire offense- the line, the running game, and the receiver corps -is better established with more experience.

Scenario 2 is that the recievers- existing and incoming freshman -develop and the line establishes a presence. If that's the case, Clausen gets the green light and becomes number 2. Either way, it will be up to the team to decide this and Weis is going to establish a system that gives him the best chance of winning.

Nobody seems to think dd will start. dont forget the 2005 nc game or that 60 yard run bq busted out on sc last year. a qb that has speed like dd is the worst nightmare for overly aggresive defenses like usc, michigan and now ucla. if dd gets in the open feild i dont there are too many that will catch him other that the irish fans in the endzone as he does the lambo leap.

Defenses will be looking for that considering he's no Clausen when passing the ball!

Fellas, all I am saying is that the progress of the team is going to dictate the DD/Clausen route. If the passing game is crap and it's more of a ground-based attack, you might see a more mobile quarterback that can provide that element. If the passing game is legit, you'll see Clausen.

I agree w/ drew, good point. We can do better than the "Lambeau Leap" though, at least make it the "Leahy Leap" or something:rock:

Well, actually it can be the "Lambeau Leap," since one of our players, Curly Lambeau pretty much founded the Packers.

-----Thats probably because Quinn never ran and nobody expected it because he had a Heisman type arm to keep everybody focused on the recievers.

Ha ha, ok, not sure that's very original but whatever. Ryan Harris just went to Denver so I guess the "mile high salute" would be ok as well (can't forget RPN either). I guess it's a moot point as Charlie would flip if someone got penalized for celebrating a TD by jumping into the crowd (personally I like Ismail kneeling on a knee, I envisioned myself doing the same thing as a kid). I think it's safe to assume that any dual threat athlete will draw different attention from the d, whoever the opponent is would have separate defensive schemes depending on a passing or running QB....good to have options going into the season. I expect Charlie to keep any info extremely close to the vest until the opener, probably why practices will be closed before the season.

Weis wants to win. I don't see him putting in a QB that he does not thing will get us the 'W'. There is now way I see Weis thinking if we give this guy the start now, then this guy can start later. That does not appear to be his way. Weis will write the plays around the QB. If the QB does not have a long arm, then the plays will not be long passes. Remember that both DD and Weis wants DD to be a pass first QB. If he is the best to get out of the pocket and get a few yards when the D gets by the line and runs the huddle the best then he will be QB.

What I am saying is Weis wants to win and will not worry about other people's feelings.
