I'm conservative (not neo-con) thank you. Actually consider myself more of a traditionalist as opposed to conservative, but that party ain't in existence. There should be six parties:

1) Far right nuts
2) Traditionalists
3) Moderates (undecided)
4) JFK/Truman democrats
5) Moveon.org liberals
6) The world is gonna die green thumbs.

No effen way, man. I would have guessed green party based your posts on global (cough) warming.

That's part of the problem with party lines: some people expect you to agree on every issue with the group. Pack mentality rules I guess.

No doubt, everybody gets looped into one category. Like christian extremists, I don't know any of those. LOL Supposedly, they have all this power, but I must be missing where they run the agenda in D.C.

One thing that I think is putting some moderate dems off, if there is NO room in the democratic party for someone like Liebermann, it doesn't bode well for where the party is headed. I honestly don't know if JFK or Truman would recognize his own party today.

A lot of kids are democrats because of teacher/professor/education bias. Once they start learning/thinking for themselves, alot of them turn more conservative. Especially when tax the rich starts meaning double incomes of about 90,000. Which in NY, ain't all that much.

Now that's a little ridiculous. If one goes to school, to learn, and they change their ways of thinking, which becomes more "liberal," then there must be a "bias." I agree that school can be stifling, and is biased at times, but come on! People are more likely to turn more "conservative" when they have at least their share of the pie, if not more. Then they want to protect it, or make more.

What is extremely crazy about this comment, is that IrishEnvy is a site whose central subject is college football at the University of Notre Dame--an educational institution!! Furthermore, one of the things that most fans of ND football embrace is that the players are actually students, and not just uneducated minor league athletes.

Not rediculous at all. I hear about teachers using their platform to instill their views into their students. Every week it's another teacher/professor doing something outrageous. The kids who call in are concerned that the teacher will punish them for having contrarian views.

It's only crazy, because its true. In Calif, it was mandatory to take a college class about Studies in Women. Hmm..could it be that certain political views were being driven down our throats, with very little education taking place? I feel sorry for students who have to deal with that today. I call it indoctrination, as opposed to teaching kids how to think.

Your comment that people become more conservative ONCE they get a piece of the pie?? I guess you are forgetting what is the basis of conservatism.
Lower taxes (helps EVERYONE)
Strong national defense
Personal responsibility (not a govt handout)
Educational accountability
Private ownership (of many things, including retirement benes)
Less govt
Values and morals are important
Human life is not a throwaway

Very little of the above has ANYTHING to do with having wealth and growing it.

BTW- the website 'Students for academic freedom' is a very instructional, and eye-opening site.

A recent ninth circuit (circus) court ruled that parents have no right controlling what their kids learn. Not surprised seeing that a uber liberal court would suggest that a school board knows more than the parents. This probably helps schools have seminars on homosexuality, while banning parents from attending (true story). See where I am going with this?

So I looked at one of the first articles on that website that is supported by the David Horowitz, about an ad published in an Emory school newspaper about Islam. Part of the problem is there is a fundamental misunderstanding of what Jihad means. Why trust a group that misrepresents a tenent of a religion in which their really is serious problems running through certain factions of it? In their rebuttal to the Religious Life's response to the ad, notice that Horowitz and Co. contextualize their original comments, thereby, mitigating the inflammatory facade. Interesting.

By the way, what's wrong with women's studies? The reason it is important is because so much of academic and scholarly material has been given from the viewpoint of white men. Women's studies provides an different view on things, and perhaps, a necessary view.

I admit to not having read Horowitz's books, but there is enough documented evidenc out there to trust his credibility.

Of course, any refutation by someone affiliated with an institution of education is probably "not to be trusted."

I do want to say that I've been reading some of the student complaints, and some may be warranted. However, I do have trouble accepting many students complaints wholesale, about their class and teachers. Some of the complaints are ridiculous, and demonstrate a an apparent lack of understanding by the student. Of course, it's easy to just lodge complaints without having any rebuttals by the professors.

There are some professors not up to snuff, though. Education should improve; I would not trust David Horowitz to spearhead that though.

Feminism is hilarious. Pretty much like the actions of the NAACP. We don't support EVERYTHING that's good for women or blacks. Only that which fits the liberal agenda.

I'm assuming you've never studied feminism then. It may be important to point out that feminism is not some monolithic theory on which everybody agrees on every aspect (there are different kinds of feminism). It can, however, serve as a locus of dialogue.

If you think that women should be treated with equal rights, that would be an aspect of feminism. I'm not sure which aspects of feminism you speak of that only fit "the liberal agenda." Is equal rights part of that agenda then? That seems like a good thing then.

and stoney, you are from the Nati right? go across the river to the great commonwealth that is your neighbor, and there you will find a stronghold of christian conservative extremists who hold great power in the local and state legislature and who affect the national elections at least from the state. trust me, it does exist.

and just from my experience, my high school was a bastion of rush limbaugh and michael savage teachings except for the rare exception. and it was also my experience that the conservative ones weren't open to much debate. it was the few liberal teachers who would listen to the many objections and be open to discussion.

A defiition of "Feminism":
"Feminism is the name of a number of social, cultural and political movements, theories and moral philosophies that are concerned cultural, political and economic practices and inequalities that discriminate against women. Feminists may disagree over the sources of inequality, how to attain equality, and the extent to which gender and gender-based identities should be questioned and critiqued; some of this disagreement may stem from continuing pressure to conform to social norms. Liberal feminists, such as Gloria Steinem, believe the women’s liberation movement revolves around the equality of sexes, and that biological sex should not be the only factor in shaping a person's social identity, socio-political or economic rights. Radical feminists would also argue that feminism is about ending domination or elitism in society. Modern feminist political activists commonly campaign for women's human right to bodily integrity and autonomy on matters such as reproductive rights, including the right to abort, access to contraception and quality prenatal care; for protection from violence within a domestic partnership; against sexual harassment, street harassment, and rape; for workplace rights, including maternity leave and equal pay; and against all other forms of sex-based discrimination "

Feminism is about Equal Rights...

It's unclear to me what the problem with Equal Rights is in America, but it's never been a popular thing to support on the Right.

I've been trying to bring back the Whig Party since junior high.

So far, I think there are three of us and one of those is a bag lady at Union Station in Chicago that joined us for 25 cents.

I'm pretty much none of the above--especially in this political climate. I tend to think of myself as generally conservative, but not to say Republican. I'm financially conservative, which makes me dislike the president's and congress' budgets the last few years--running up huge deficits that look Democratic (except a much larger portion earmarked for the war and military spending). I also think being conservative environmentally means preserving what we can, not wasting money overseas on oil to the extent possible, but should earmark even more funds for new forms of energy research. At the same time, I also hate the legislation of social reform that always happens in Democratic-controlled situations. Nobody really fits with my views--I pretty much end up staying apolitical. On a sidenote, I find it scary that so many people vote the entire ticket of their respective political parties without looking at the person they're voting for.

Yes! We need new (very old) blood. Millard Fillmore was our last great president.

I could be wrong (and will readily admit that when it pertains to feminism). To me, it was about gaining access to the work place, not staying home with the kids, not having to have kids (right to privacy is huge in this cause), equal pay, having men share more of the workload at home. I'm sure I'm missing several. But, it sure isn't about trying to have all women gain success, whatever that means to each individual.

BTW- nothing wrong with Studies in Women. EXCEPT, having it MANDATORY to graduate seems odd, rather than it being an elective.

On the way home from work today (getting back to the free sharing of ideas in colleges), a faculty has recommended firing a professor who emailed to everyone a copy of George Washingtons thanksgiving address. Five people complained of harassment. What was the harassing nature of our first President's address....the only thing I can think of is the repeated use of the word God. I understand that they complained about the link coming from a conservative site, but why should that be an issue in a free exchange of information environment? Hmmm....

From everything I have ever heard, your experience is an exception.

As far as KY, that area may be more Christian based, so what. Since when has become a dirty word. I
