Just came back from the game and aftergame festivities and decided I would share my humble opinion, feel free to correct or comment. Cheers.

OVERALL: Offensive production was minimal, the plays drawn up on either side didn't seem to be geared towards large gains as much as chunks of yards at a time, with the exception of a couple trick plays for each team. However, we do have the power on offense to drive down the field with a much more consistent tone than last year. Defense seemed to fill up the field quickly and effectively making nearly every offensive drive an uphill battle. We seem to have the right scheming and personnel to making a defensive showing in this next season.

QUARTERBACKS: I was impressed with Clausen and his consistency and awareness. He didn't seem to get a chance, however, to really stun anyone. But he didn't seem to make any mental mistakes and his technique was mature and solid. Clausen's pocket presence, awareness, and ability make him a strong contender for the starting spot. Sharpley was consistent and poised. He didn't have a chance to throw the ball since a large portion of the plays went to Junior Jabbie and committed a few mental errors when a passing play was called up. Demetrius Jones was a bit erratic. Had a few solid throws, but threw an awful pass over the middle straight into the hands of a defender, and the single blue team touchdown scored was a poorly thrown lob that Robby Parris had to stop, retrace, and work very hard for. Jones, however, is very quick on his feet and can get the ball down the field with his feet if nothing opens up. Frazer, like Sharpley, did not see very many plays that showcased his talents, but when he did have the ball, didn't make many memorable plays, though many of receivers dropped passes that could have been caught.

RUNNINGBACKS: Travis Thomas made a very consistent and composed showing today taking up good chunks of yard nearly everytime he got a touch. Armando Allen, while his speed was clear, didn't get a chance to showcase it as the defense speedily swarmed around him. Junior Jabbie showed up in force today. While not as speedy as the other backs, showed great vision in finding the lanes and exploded out of the backfield for good yardage. James Aldridge didn't seem to make much of an impact, albeit he didn't seem to get very many plays drawn up to showcase his abilities.

RECEIVERS: Carlson was consistent and composed as always. He did have a dropped pass but besides that seemed to be a good safety net for the quarterback. We will greatly benefit from his play. I do not believe George West took the field today, and few receivers made any impressive plays for the ball or after the catch with one exception. Robby Parris made a good appearance and showed a great amount of determination in getting to and catching the ball. I think we have a little while before the battle for receiver clears up.

O LINE: They played hard all through the game, despite having to march up and down the field for both teams. They had their down moments but came out more consistent than I had expected from the rather young group. Improvements, however, can be made from here till September.

D LINE: These guys took the offensive line on. The presence of Trevor Laws greatly helps this group. The defensive line did their job and filled up the offensive line for the majority of the game.

LINEBACKERS: We got faster, smarter, or both. Less hesitation, more getting to the ball. These guys were consistently making the plays at the quarterback or at the runningback. The most apparent observation for me was how quickly they filled out the field in front the quarterback and runningback making it difficult for the offensive to try to make short gains. One other thing I noticed was how shifty they were pre-snap giving the backfield a few different looks.

DEFENSIVE BACKS: While I didn't pay as much attention to defensive backs as the rest of the positions. One thing I did not notice was a corner or safety caught out of position and unable to make a play to the ball. Quarterbacks were having a difficult time finding an open reciever and when the ball was released a corner or safety was well within the reach of swatting the ball or going for an interception. I was especially impressed with Ray Herring and his plays in the defensive backfield.

Overall, I'd say we're going to have a solid year.

Was the defense impressive enough to get top level guys to come and be apart of it?

I was at the game and saw some of the recruits on the sidelines. I saw Newman and Flemming. They seemed like they were having a great time.

But for the defense....they played great. They really suprised me with the speed they have and aggressiveness they play with. C.Brown is the man for sure. I think this 3-4 defense will work out just fine.

the defense was more impressive than the offense in my opinion, so if that says anything... and rumor has it flemming committed today. or maybe it's not a rumor anymore and i just don't know it.

That is such good news about the defense. Sounds like Charlie has found a coach who will be the same type of catalyst for rapid change on defense that he was for the offense.

Large, almost 52,000. Most seemed very upbeat, and showed lots of affection for Lou. Many also left sunburnt, including myself.
