Man, how stupid can these guys get?!

Facebook group lands USC football player in hot water

An inside joke on the USC football team went awry when a Facebook group sparked outrage among students.

The racist Facebook group was created by a USC football player and showed a graphic of a black baby in handcuffs. An athletic department source said the group was a joke and had no serious purpose.

Junior linebacker Clay Matthews created the group, "White Nation," which featured a graphic with the caption, "arrest black babies before they become criminals."

Teammates David Buehler, Brian Cushing, Dan Deckas and Dallas Sartz joined the group.

"This group is not for the faint of heart," read the group's description. "All members are athletes of Caucasion (sic) descent. DISCLAIMER: In no way are the following memebers (sic) intolerant of others, we are just doing our duty of protecting the Arian (sic) brotherhood."

An athletic department source who wished to remain anonymous said the group was a joke and had no serious purpose.

The "joke" began when a black football player nicknamed some of his teammates "White Nation," the source said.

Stefanie Gopaul, a freshman majoring in psychology, discovered the group through her Facebook friendship with Sartz and Cushing and sent private messages to both, expressing her concern.

"Dallas Sartz said that White Nation is a joke on the team and that he's not like that," Gopaul said. "I was still really upset about it."

Gopaul created the Facebook group, " Clay Matthews (USC football player) expresses anti-black sentiment," and invited all of her Facebook friends to join.

"I honestly thought (Sartz and Cushing) were taking me as a joke," Gopaul said. "I posted the group so that they would know that (the White Nation group) is inappropriate."

The group received a strong response, at one time having as many as 90 members, and students expressed their outrage on the group message board and in personal messages to Gopaul.

"I received some very upset comments," Gopaul said. "A high school student wrote to me and said he wanted to go to 'SC next year and that he was glad I created the group and that it made him look at the school differently."

Football player Sedrick Ellis sent Gopaul a message explaining that "White Nation" is an inside joke on the team and that Matthews is not racist.

"My goal was that the picture and group be taken down," Gopaul said. "Even though you have this inside joke, it shouldn't be brought to Facebook because people will see it who aren't in on it."

Gopaul said she then received a message from Matthews.

"At first, Clay Matthews sounded a bit upset with me, and understandably so," Gopaul said. "But he was very nice in his second letter once I explained my intentions and actions to him."

Matthews said that another person posted the picture, and he was unsure of how to delete the group, Gopaul said.

He also wrote a formal apology to the members of "Clay Matthews (USC football player) expresses anti-black sentiment."

"He told us that he immediately went online to explain it and apologize, and to say this is not indicative of his or the team's attitude," said Tim Tessalone, director of sports information.

"We talked to him about how something done without serious intent could be perceived in a negative light and he agreed; he felt badly for his poor judgment, and he quickly moved to correct it."

A source from the athletic department said Matthew's apology said he was sorry, and that the group was not serious and had no racist intent. He also said his roommate and best friend are black and said that it was poor judgment on his part to create the group.

"As the creator of a group, it's your responsibility to watch what is posted on there," Gopaul said. "I feel like he's at least a lot more aware of what is and isn't OK."

Gopaul agreed to delete her group within two days of Matthew's apology on Feb. 14.

"I really do believe that it was a joke," Gopaul said. "Racial tension is already here at 'SC, and a lot of people were upset that he wasn't punished. I was never out to punish him, but a lot of students who saw the group wanted that."

Dinah Manning, a former member of the "Clay Matthews" group and a junior majoring in philosophy, said football players should be mindful of their status as public figures.

"The football players are ambassadors of our university," Manning said. "It is offensive that they could blindly espouse hateful language and demeaning images. If it was meant to be a joke, it was careless and in bad taste."

When Matthews left the "White Nation" Facebook group, he gave up his ability to delete the group; an administrator must manually remove each member to delete the group.

Matthew James Hodgson, a senior from Occidental College, now runs the group and said he plans on using the group to educate people about the ignorance of racism.

"(My friends and I joined) because we did not agree with the white supremacist sentiment of the group," Hodgson said. "We wanted to make the other people feel uncomfortable. I assumed control of the group with the intention to continue this process and make it known that this kind of group is unacceptable."

The membership includes three Occidental students and five other members from regional or high school networks nationwide. No USC students remain in the group.

"I didn't expect Facebook to have the impact it had," Gopaul said. "I honestly just wanted people at USC to see the (White Nation) group. ? I knew if I used Facebook, people would at least see it."

Buehler, Cushing, Deckas, Ellis, Matthews and Sartz all declined to comment for this article.

Unreal stupidity!!!!!

Nobody at Usc is ever in trouble or "Hot Water". You can literally get away with murder at that bloody university and get away with it. Why do you think that all the superstar athletes are going there? Because of warm climates, Hot women, and if they do get into trouble, someone from the Usc nation will save them. Look at Reggie Douche I mean Bush. He was caught red handed and what have we heard about that since? Not a fucking thing. That shit happens at Notre Dame (A real University) and you get kicked out off the campus.

God I HATE USC!

Haha, wow! I really hope that those who took part in this are repremanded, however, something tells me that an apology and 20 hours of community service and tolerance classes will be the most punishment they see. Its no surprise that our youth are growing up to be gun toting, drug dealing criminals when our instituitons of higher learning refuse to discipline their students. These guys I am sure will continue to play for USC and keep their scholorships once again proving that the money USC makes off the football team will always be reign over doing the right thing and disciplining these kids. I guess we should be used to this when Pac-Man shoots up a strip club and Brett Myers beats his wife on a Boston street corner, but its disgusting that these young atheletes are not held accountable for anything because they are superstars. I have no doubts that if I had created that Facebook group in college I would have been expelled immediately. USC is such a crock.

Now I am not really defending USC but these guys I guess technically did nothing wrong besides being galactically stupid. And you say you hope these guys are reprimanded? Well, would 20 hours of community college and an apology be a repromand. I mean I just don't know of any rules that these guys broke that would net them a expulsion. Besides, if these are their true "beliefs" which I doubt then the guys in the locker room will find out and take care of it accordingly. Now you mention kids growing up being gun toting drug dealers, which is a huge leap to make in this case, but colleges have nothing to do with it. Most problems many of these kids have today starts in the home with a lack of parenting. I mean realistically if they ain't slingin or banging by the time they hit college, they probably aren't going to. Let's look at this for what it is, one guy taking a private joke to a very public forum where most people aren't going to get the joke.

NDBCS, i see youre reasoning which i pretty much agree with. And yes, inside jokes are used on facebook...but no inside jokes that would offend a race of human beings, i think that was stupid and he should make a public apology but other than that he didnt break any defined rules

Putting aside the fact that USC doesn't punish its transgressors...what exactly would they get suspended for? What they did was in phenomenally poor taste, extremely offensive to anyone not in on the joke, but what rules did they break? Not being sarcastic, I truly do not know.

How can you say they did nothing wrong in one sentence trhen say they should be suspended. They didn't break any rules that I am aware of. Should they be reprimanded internally?Yes, but besides a good tongue lashing on how stupid this stunt was I can't see to much coming out of this.

yeah I knew the rehab thing was a joke, I was mainly just stating that they can't really be punished for anything they did, if your where including the one year suspension in the joke then I have to chalk that up to sarcasm doesn't traqnslate well on the internet. LOL Whats the old Dennis Leary joke " If my career ever goes downhill, I'm going on a 3 day bender snorting coke, smoking pot, get caught drunk driving then go into rehab. Six months later comeout say " I fucked up!!" and everything will be good again." seems that happens for real these days way to often.

Race and Football at SC

Race and Football at SC

Anyone hear about this? And, anyone want to speculate on what the response would've been -- both within the university and on the part of the media -- if it had happened at ND? I know the kids were just joking around, but -- stupid spelling errors aside! -- this is idiocy of the worst sort.

USC Football Player Won't Be Punished For Creating 'White Nation' Facebook Group
by Elizabeth Geli/Daily Trojan/USC

(U-WIRE) LOS ANGELES — University of Southern California football player Clay Matthews Jr. and his teammates will not be punished by the university for their involvement in the "White Nation" Facebook group, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The controversy first reported in the Daily Trojan before spring break garnered national attention and prompted discussion on the limitations of jokes, racism and Facebook privacy.

"He's done what he could to apologize," coach Pete Carroll said about Matthews to the Times. "I think he's taken all the right steps for anybody that it offended. And there was never any intent of that at all."

The inside joke started when running backs coach and special teams coordinator Todd McNair jokingly referred to a group of Caucasian players on the kick-off team as "White Nation."

"I made the name. The White Nation," McNair said to the Times. "Just playfully, man."

Clay Matthews Jr., a linebacker, created the Facebook group whose majors included teammates David Buehler, Brian Cushing, Dan Deckas and Dallas Sartz.

"This group is not for the faint of heart," read the group's description. "All members are athletes of Caucasion (sic) descent. DISCLAIMER: In no way are the following memebers (sic) intolerant of others, we are just doing our duty of protecting the Arian brotherhood."

People outside of USC joined without Matthews' knowledge and posted a graphic of a black baby in handcuffs with the caption "arrest black babies before they become criminals," an image created by an online clothing company T-Shirt Hell.

Michael L. Jackson, vice president of student affairs, said the group reflects poorly on the university.

"While the group was evidently created as an offshoot to joking between races among teammates at USC, this joke was clearly taken to an improper length," he said to the Times. "The action of the students involved goes against the core values of what it means to be a member of the Trojan Family — and doesn't represent our diverse community."

Stefanie Gopaul, a freshman majoring in health promotion and disease prevention studies, heard about the "White Nation" group and started the rebuttal Facebook group "Clay Matthews (USC football player) expresses anti-black sentiment."

The day after the Daily Trojan article, the Los Angeles Times reported the story. Eventually, CBS, Sports Illustrated, Drudge Report and the Orange County Register also picked up the story.

The original article has nearly 300 online comments and more than 300,000 page views, the most in the history of the Daily Trojan's Web site.

Many comments expressed the view that despite being a joke, the group is still offensive.

"I've frankly never heard of a 'joke' like this," wrote a Web site commenter who identified himself as Tim. "This is a problem. We should see it and talk about it. The inability to explain why this is supposed to be funny is why the Klan always wore hoods."

The spelling errors in the Facebook group descriptions also prompted comments from readers.

"Before we all get our panties in a bunch, I think we need to send the football team to a hooked on phonics class FIRST," wrote a reader who identified himself as Andy.

Discussion about the issue erupted on the blogosphere and online message boards.

The athletic department and football team are putting the matter behind them.

"I think I speak for the whole team when I say we respect Clay, and we have his best interests at heart and we just hope it all goes away," football player Sedrick Ellis said to the Times.

Hey good job with the post, I guess you are finding time away from the baby. Unless of course she is spitting up on your computer while you burp and type at the same time.

He's sleeping, actually, and isn't really much of a puker (so far). I'm on break this week, trying to avoid all the reading -- Heidegger and Hegel (in German!) -- I promised myself I'd do. Digging up dirt on SC football -- which still sucks, by the way -- is much more fun.

I agree. I hate to be defending USC too, and while those guys acted like idiots and should be disciplined in some way, expulsion is pretty harsh. Presumably, these guys get along with their black teammates. if not, I think there would be a bit of a problem on the team in which case they'd probably get kicked off the team just for creating a problem in the lockerroom. it's really stupid for these guys to put up this kind of inside joke in a public setting, and an apology is definitely in order. however, facebook.... well, many, many people do and reveal many stupid things, many of which are inside jokes, on facebook.

that being said, if the player had committed murder, the same punishment probably would have occurred.

and SC still sucks... to borrow a phrase from a certain person.

Agreed. What they did wasn't a big deal -- the article says that the "White Nation" nickname was actually created by their black teammates -- but it was in wicked poor taste and sh*t would have hit the FAN if it'd happened at ND:

1. ResLife would've been after them.
2. Athletics would've been after them.
3. The media would've talked non-stop about those racist white boys in South Bend.

But at SC? Just another bump in the road ... the road to SANCTIONS, that is! ;)

Oh and GG, thanks for folding my thread into this one. I must have missed it since it came up just after the baby arrived -- should've used the Search function, I guess!
