Rivals is reporting that Ben Habern, a Junior Day Attendee, has received an Official Offer. Habern is a two way lineman who is being recruited primarily to play Center, however Notre Dame's offer is for Habern to play Defensive End. Habern considers Notre Dame to be at the top of his list with one or two other schools, and is looking to make an early decision, possibly before the summer.

Personally if I was being recriuted to play center and a good team in a nice cituation wanted me to play DE I would have to really put that team at the top.

It is nice to hear that someone from Texas came up for cold Junior Day and has us in his top 2!

Shows that not every Southern boy is as much of a wuss about the cold as a certain Florida commit ... *cough*MajorWright*cough*

Thanks IUB. His size would be perfect for a DE in a 3-4. For him to go all the way up to SB for a junior day on his own dime shows how interested he is in ND.

just watched his highlights on rivals and the first video was of him at guard and he was dominate pancake after pancake and i said to myself that he is just to powerful of a interior run blocker to play anywhere else. Then i watched the 2nd video of him on defense and he's even better on defense, very quick off the ball and is 10x more stronger than anybody else on the field. This kind of player is a must get so versitile and can nose tackle, guard, center, d-end i'm hoping that this is one of the guys braxton said was close to committing.

Ben is now on the latest B&G list. They also have him listed as a DE prospect so that would seem to confirm that is what ND is recruiting him for.

Can one of the MOD's please post these 6 guys as the latest ND verbals??

......then we can sit back and laugh while Urban tries to 'flip' them.....

Finally, I apologize to young Mr. Habern for the damage to his thread.

Habern lists ND & Oklahoma as his Top 2 right now, although Irishknight1023 says that Oklahoma is a done deal.:whoknows: Habern is planning on a visit to the denizen of the cockwad sometime in the next few weeks, but he has not yet received a Gator offer. He is planning on making a verbal commit before the summer.

I would think he would be offered as a DE here, as ND already has 2 Centers for 2008.

Habern has already confirmed that he is being recruited by ND to play Defensive End. That is why he is listed on Irish Envy and on B&G as a DE.

Put him on the other side of Cwynar and that would be a very nice pair of Defensive Ends (hopefully around Brandon Newman :))

Is it okay to remark that he seems a little slow (4.9 forty) for a DE? Anybody know if that was just a bad day?

At his size, Habern would probably play the same position as Cwynar at strongside DE. I have not seen any 40 times for Cwynar, but Habern's time in the 40 is about the same as one of the other strongside DE's being offered, Ethan Johnson, whose 40 time is listed as 4.85 by Scout. Rivals has Johnson at 5.16. The new (unverified) offer at strongside DE, Chancey Aghayere, is listed by Rivals as doing a 4.6 40. With that speed he would be more likely to play the weakside DE in the 3-4. Scout shows Darius Fleming who is listed as a weakside DE with a 40 of 4.57, but he is also a good possibility at one of the LB spots. The other posted weakside DE offer, Kapron Lewis-Moore has a 4.85 40 according to Rivals, and a 4.90 40 according to Scout. I guess bottom line Habern's 40 time is comparable with the other ND offered recruits at the same position. A lot of people believe that the 40 time for a DE is irrelevant anyway, and FWIW I tend to agree with that assessment.

Very good points, and just to add to your last point -- 40 times in the 3-4 are pretty useless. In the 4-3, where it's imperative for the DEs to get to the QB, 40 times are VERY important. However, in the 3-4, the primary goal is for the DEs to stop the run and tie up numerous blockers for the linebackers. The OLBs are the ones usually responsible for the outside rush.

Look at 3-4 NFL teams like the Pats, Ravens, Chargers, and Steelers. More often than not, the leader in sacks for those teams are the OLBs, and not the DEs.

Great - thanks for clearing things up, IUB and Katzenboyer. Nice to have people around here who know more about football than me. :)

Right. Another way to think about 3-4 DEs is that they are really two extra DTs, just a bit smaller and quicker than your average DT.

Right. Another way to think about 3-4 DEs is that they are really two extra DTs, just a bit smaller and quicker than your average DT.

CW in his presser yesterday did a really great job in a little under two minutes in explaining the role of the DE in the 3-4. He explained the concept of Strongside/Weakside vs. Left/Right DE's very clearly, and I think also made it clear that his preference would be to have the Left/Right philosophy in place if it can be accomplished personell wise. This means that as Knute listed above CW's ideal would be to have guys like Cwynar and Habern at the ends with a Brandon Newman in the middle. This would allow the Defensive Ends to line up in the same spot on all plays and not have to shift their formation in response to the Offensive Strong Side formation, something that would have to be done if they were forced to go with the Strongside/Weakside DE philosophy. The Left/Right concept is also ideal because it gives the D much more flexibility in allowing guys with ND offers like Kapron Lewis-Moore, Darius Fleming, and Chancey Aghayere, who are classified as Defensive Ends to actually play the OLB position in the 3-4 if they stay the same size, or to move to a Left or Right Defensive End if they bulk up. This is why getting at least one more recruit out of the same mold as Sean Cwynar is so critical to the long term success of the 3-4, and also why Ben Habern & Ethan Johnson who are the current recruits that are closest to fitting the Cwynar mold are going to be fiercely recruited by the staff.
