Does anyone think Spurrier will even talk to Garcia about this?

Stephen Garcia, a highly recruited Tampa, FL QB, who committed to, and has already enrolled at South Carolina, had a really good time on Friday night, that is until he was caught by the Columbia police. I guess the ole ball coach forgot to distribute pictures of his new recruits to the Columbia police because Garcia actually ended up spending the night in jail. As to Spurrier's reaction, the last paragraph in the story says it all:

"Head coach Steve Spurrier was not expected to comment about the arrest, athletic department spokesman Steve Fink said."

I guess there are still some schools where you can have some fun these days. Here is the entire story from USA Today and the AP.

Quarterback recruit from Florida charged with drunkenness

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina recruit Stephen Garcia was arrested early Saturday morning in a restaurant and nightclub district near the university and charged with drunkenness and failure to stop for a police officer.
According to an incident report from the Columbia Police Department, the 19-year-old quarterback from Florida was approached by an officer responding to a report of an altercation outside a building.

Garcia ran away from the officer and tried to hide in an alley, according to the incident report. When the officer caught up with him, he turned toward the officer "in a threatening manner."

The report says the officer "immediately engaged his baton" but did not use it. The report also says Garcia was trying to zip up his pants and fix his belt. The officer smelled alcohol and said the subject was unsteady on his feet.

The report notes that Garcia is younger than the legal age for drinking alcohol and was arrested.

According to the report, Garcia had been at a private party at a club in the city's Five Points area. Garcia was released from jail on a personal recognizance bond Saturday evening.

Garcia, a highly touted recruit out of Jefferson High in Tampa, enrolled at South Carolina last month.

Last year, South Carolina's starting quarterback Blake Mitchell also was charged in an incident in the same area near the campus. He was accused of punching a bouncer — an assault charge that was later dropped — and spent a few hours in jail.

Head coach Steve Spurrier was not expected to comment about the arrest, athletic department spokesman Steve Fink said.

The worst that'll happen, is Superior will redshirt him so he can hide him for a year until it blows over. Rest assured it will reappear when he does make his way up the depth chart. But basically another badge of honor for an SEC school (w/ no offense to Vandy...yet!).

Yes, and I don't think you'd like to be in Garcia's shoes when it takes place.

Garcia again in hot water

USC freshman quarterback Stephen Garcia is under investigation by Columbia police after a complaint that he keyed a Columbia man’s car on campus Thursday afternoon, authorities said Friday.

The investigation comes two weeks after Garcia was arrested for drunkenness and failure to stop on a police command in the early-morning hours of Feb. 17 outside the Knock Knock Club in Five Points.

Adam Biggs told police he observed a male subject using a key to scratch the right side of his 2007 Toyota Corolla, causing $1,100 in damages, according to an incident report.

Garcia’s name was blacked out on the report. Police spokeswoman Sgt. Florence McCants said no one has been charged in the incident.

According to the report, the 34-year-old Biggs confronted Garcia after seeing him scratch the car “from the side rear almost to the front of the automobile,” leading to a “verbal confrontation.” After Garcia identified himself, Biggs told him he was going to call the police. Garcia then offered to pay Biggs $500 for the damages.

Contacted by USC police, Garcia told the officers that he was aware of the allegation, but denied damaging Biggs’ car, which was parked near the Thomas Cooper Library.

“I’m going under the assumption that he’s been falsely accused. I believe Stephen when he said he didn’t scrape the kid’s car,” USC coach Steve Spurrier said. “He didn’t even know the kid. ... I just don’t believe he’d do that.”

Biggs is a visiting professor from Claflin University, according to Pam Ferral, a staff member at the library where Biggs filed the initial report. Biggs, who did his doctorate work at Harvard, told police he did not know Garcia.

Attempts to reach Garcia and Biggs on Friday were unsuccessful. Neal Lourie, Garcia’s lawyer, declined comment.

The 19-year-old Garcia was suspended for four days following his Five Points arrest. Spurrier lifted the suspension on Feb. 22, a day after it was announced, saying Garcia’s punishment would have ended had his court date not been delayed.

Garcia, who enrolled at USC in January after graduating from high school early, is scheduled to appear in municipal court Wednesday. Spurrier said last week that he thought Garcia would be eligible to participate in an alcohol diversion program.

A native of Lutz, Fla., Garcia was ranked among the nation’s top 20 quarterback prospects this year by several recruiting services. Seven weeks after Garcia arrived on campus, and before he has taken his first practice snap, Spurrier told the quarterback that he might “need people to go around with you.”

“In life, he ought to be able to go by himself and behave or whatever. But he’s had a couple of bad, little incidences here,” Spurrier added. “But still, if he didn’t do anything. If he’s just walking by a car and the guy runs up and says, ‘You scratched my car,’ and he didn’t do it ...

“I’ve been falsely accused of things. People said I did things I didn’t do and have said things I didn’t say. So I understand it can happen, and that’s what we’re going under right now — that he’s been falsely accused.”

Is it too early yet to call this guy the first high profile bust in the '07 recruiting class? :sigh:

Gosh, Spurrier's comments are a riot. If this kid were at ND they'd have hung him by his balls from the underside of the 'Dome.

If he did it - what an ass, keying someone's car like that. Sounds like he ID'd himself, like "please don't get me in trouble, I'm Stephen Garcia, Coach will kill me" type scenario.

Ok um, anybody else curious where I kid thats been in school a month and a half comes up with $500 dollars in hush money? If these allegations are true that is. Just thought that was funny, apparently the people in Columbia aren't on the same page as the the residents of Gainesville used to be.

Not really. If he had a job last summer he could've made a few grand. Since he presumably lived at home until he started school in January, his expenses would be p;retty low. If he was trying hard not to get in trouble, I could see him thinking that he could stand to lose $5K.

South Carolina QB Garcia to miss spring practice

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia, arrested twice in recent weeks, will not participate in the Gamecocks' upcoming spring practice.

Garcia was arrested Saturday and accused of damaging a professor's car with a key. Last month, the 19-year-old was arrested and charged with drunkenness and failing to stop for a police officer.

"Stephen Garcia will be suspended from all football team activities through the end of this semester," Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier said in a statement Tuesday. "He will be expected to go to class and study hall but will not participate in any spring practices or team football meetings."

Spurrier said he hoped Garcia would make "an all-out effort to get his personal life in line with our other Carolina football players and eventually reach his full potential as a student-athlete."

On Monday, Garcia issued an apology to the professor, Spurrier, his teammates and fans.

The Gamecocks open spring practice March 20.

Wow, that's a harsh punishment. I'm sure Garcia won't ever make those kind of mistakes again now that he knows Spurrier doesn't issue a wrist slap for such offences.
