The cover choice was a pretty big suprise to me. I figured it'd be Smith, Peterson, Johnson, Ginn, or Quinn, especially considering his deal with Xbox, but Jared Zabransky. I loved this this year's Fiesta Bowl as much as the next hardcore college football fan, but Boise State on the cover? Come on...

Latest gig for ‘Z' — cover model

Boise State is in the game — and on its cover, too.
Former Bronco quarterback Jared Zabransky will grace the cover of the immensely popular EA Sports NCAA Football 2008 video game, according to a Boise State athletic department official.

"It's extremely big for us as an athletic department. It crosses generations by touching kids and adults ... It's an incredible marketing opportunity,'' said Brad Larrondo, who is the Broncos' senior assistant athletic director for promotions and marketing.

EA Sports will make an official announcement Friday in Orlando, Fla., during an ESPN The Weekend event at Walt Disney World.

Zabransky declined comment Wednesday evening, preferring to wait until Friday to speak publicly.

BSU has already seen and approved the artwork for the Zabransky cover, Larrondo said.

"The Fiesta Bowl victory was a key to it all, and he was the quarterback behind the fairy-tale story,'' Larrondo said.

EA Sports NCAA Football 2008 will be released later this year, likely in July. More than 2.2 million copies of the video game were sold last season on various game consoles, making it the fourth-highest selling video game last year, according to Next Generation, an interactive entertainment Web site.

Former USC running back and Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush was on last year's cover. Other notable players on past covers include Heisman Trophy winners Carson Palmer, Ricky Williams, Charles Woodson and Danny Wuerffel.

Zabransky will be the first non-BCS conference player tobe on the cover of the popular series with the catchy advertising slogan — "If it's in the game, it's in the game."

Larrondo said BSU gets more royalty money from EA Sports than any other licensee. Last year, the school received $78,551 from EA Sports, he said. Boise State receives the money because the football team, like all Division I-A and I-AA teams, is part of the game.

Nike was the No. 2 provider of royalty money to BSU last year, giving the Broncos $47,500.

The EA Sports news comes one day after Boise State announced a film deal to tell the story of the 2006 undefeated season and the 2007 Fiesta Bowl victory. Three Boise-based filmmakers hope to use a documentary to develop story ideas for a movie, which could generate a rights fee for BSU between $250,000 and $750,000.

Work begins Monday on the documentary, and it could be released this fall.

wow. I am shocked on that choice. Most people just print off their own covers anyways though

Does the Madden injury curse work on the college game too? I just wish they had a PC version of NCAA FB.

These NCAA games are the only ones I play every year. I think it's the only thing that gets me from one season to the next.

I think they're just trying to be uncontroversial ... nobody hates BSU, but if they'd picked Quinn, or Smith, or Russell, or ... then there would have been hell to pay.

Well, don't forget, everyone loves a Cinderella, and Boise State was THE Cinderella story of college football this year. I saw a lot of people who normally don't follow college football too closely talking about the end of the Fiesta Bowl the next day. That finish was a BIG deal at the time, and EA's just trying to cash in on that.

Shrewd move, actually... that's what makes college football so dramatic, knowing that some nothing team playing in East Lower Bumfuck, Idaho can still knock off a major powerhouse like Oklahoma.

I don't care who's on the cover but can we get Herbstreit, Nessler, and Corso some new catch phrases, new celebrations for sacks and big tackles (if I have to see the freaking shuffle anymore, I'm going to eat my Glock) they just need to seriously change up the animations in that game. I think they have been the same for like 5 years now.

Im in a dynasty mode in the game and with maurice crum i broke the record for sacks in a season by like the 4th game( i blitz every play) and after every sack after that they would say he just broke the record. it gets so annoying

it usually comes out around mid july and they definently do need to change the animations and commentary up some because its real annoying. The NCAA football games are the only games i play, i like the dynasty mode the most mostly because the recruiting process, feels like i'm a coach and im building my team, which is why i am now following college football recruting on the internet since december

I really like the off-season in dynasty too, but it's ridiculously easy, as noted by getting a full 25 recruits, 13 of them being 5 star recruits. In the last minutes, even in close games, the computer team runs out the clock rather than doing clock stopping plays like spiking the ball or trying to get out of bounds, and the commentary gets confused a lot of times which side of the field they're on, blocked kicks as fumbles, etc. The most annoying thing to me though is the "only in a video game" kind of thing, like only 1 person being able to tackle at a time, or not being able to jump over an offensive lineman who's been pushed over, or the ball doing impossible things to be intercepted or caught. Always room for improvement

All you guys playing dynasty mode want to compare records? I am curious about what other people get state wise. Here are most of my major records for my Dynasty mode.

In 5 minute quarters, career records one individual player.
Career Pass Yrds-28739 , actually higher but game caps off at this number.
Career Rushing Yards -9432
Career Pasing Td's-433, again actually higher but most you can throw in a seeason and have it count is 127.
Career Receiving yards-10,457
Career Receptions-487
Career sacks 186.

Let me know what you guys have.

in 2 and 3 quarter seasons i am 32-0

I played 60 seasons (which is an entire dynasty mode, its all you can play) and never lost, ended up something like 750-0 won 56 national titles with 60 bowl victories and own every single coaching record. The four non-national titles were in years were where I switched to crappy schools and built them into 6 star programs. I won the heisman every year but 3. And I won 25 Big Ten titles(sorry I accepted the Big Ten's offer to join after year 35.)

Those are some odd numbers for the game to cap off at - i've never checked that out.

I joined the Big 10 after awhile too and really wish I could leave it - i HATE!!! being stuck playing the really crappy big 10 schools year after year and only having a few open games a season!

Well, I switched schools to like 1star programs, which makes it harder to recruit but more fun to play trying to build up the programs. Plus, I always looked at all-time records and set those as goals to break over a four year span with anyone person. eventually, it did get boring (I have since traded in the game at EB games) but by that point I figured I was close to playing through the entire dynasty mode and figured I might as well finish it. I could basically beat any team with 8 plays from my playbook. And I also regretted putting ND in the Big 10, with a wide open schedule I would just custom schedule 9 of the top 25 teams every year only "locking" myself into Navy, USC, and Michigan. After I joined the big ten you have to drop Navy and USC because you have to substitute two good teams for strength of schedule because USC sucks after like year 6 I think. However if you play long enough Navy does become a consistent top 5 team, how I don't know. Oh and by the way student athlete mode or whatever its called is the worst game mode they ever came up with.

yeah as far as season stats TD passes in a season gets capped at 127, but if you go into your last game with like 126 you can throw for as many as you like and it will show up in your school records as that final stat, but on the individual players year to year stats it caps at 127. So say you have 126 you throw 12 your school record for TD's in a season will be 138. And passing yards in a game for 1 player caps off at 1,120 I believe. they do have caps on the stats but most are pretty ridiculous to get to.
