I understand where the Prelate was coming from. In context, he's wanting people's understanding of Ireland to come from real people rather than caricatures. He might have been poor in his choice of examples, but I can see his point.

It's a caricature popularized by millions of immigrants (and their sons and daughters) who remembered a land where they couldn't practice their own religion or language. Those same people started the St Patrick's Day Parade to commemorate their religion and their heritage. The Parade in Dublin is held today only so the descendents of those emigrees will come back "home" and spend some dollars, U.S. and Australian.
Besides we all know the Catholic Church doesn't hold with superstition. Leprechuans addressed from a pulpit? What next? Condemning poteen or Guinness? Think what they have done for the Irish image.
