Spankings..Yea or Nay?

I was at my sister-in-laws house and she happened to spank her child who was acting up. So I was wondering what the conventional irish wisdom was on this issue.

I think spankings are fine for young children (assuming they are kin, or under your legal care) to help influence right behavior. As they get older, I think spankings are less necessary and somewhat pointless, but I know some guys who are huge and tough, but are afraid to do anything wrong b/c their mom would whoop the shit out em.

For girlfriends, wifes, etc. I don't care as long as you don't beat her to death.

It's not about the pain though, it's just light and for behavior issues. It gets attention. And its a wonderful threat.

I only believe in doing it in public if the child runs out in traffic or does something REALLY dangerous.

When I was really bad (hardly ever) my dad used to get out a wooden padde from his UC fraternity and that hurt like a bitch!! Not acceptable today, but very effective back then I assure you! Kids have it easy these days, probably for the better.

I avoid spanking my two kids, because I was on the end of a belt or a switch when I was young and I swore that I would never do it to mine. It is hard sometimes to keep my sanity, but over time with redirection, timeouts and talking about bad behavior it is starting to pay off.

Depends on the kid. Some kids need to be spanked. Some don't need it. And for some kids spanking could by psychologically harmful.

Anyone who drops a blanket statement on this topic is being VERY short-sighted. Every kid is different, and will respond differently to different methods of discipline. I think spanking should be an option and I wouldn't be opposed to spanking my future children, but it could easily turn out that I'll never need to. If your kids are well-behaved and don't have any large bruises or broken bones, I'll assume you're doing something right and leave it at that. You raise your kids, and I'll raise mine.

I voted for spankings. I work at an elementary school and believe me some kids need to be spanked (not by me obviously but by their parents). Kids are very disrespectful today because parents (not all) want to be their best friend instead of their parent. The timeout method is BS (for most kids, there's always exceptions). Kids have so much sh!t in their rooms that getting sent there is more of a reward than a punishment.

i believe spankings are supposed to be done at home not in public like a grocery store. just my personal oppinion. if i see a kid acting up in public that means to me the parents arent taking care of discipline while their at home.

i know this family with 3 girls, and the oldest is 8. they can get away with murder and the parents wont even smack their hands. BUT, its the parents responsibility and they can discipline their own child their own way.

Amen. I can agree to that, except I can honestly say I have never received a spanking My mom is scary enough as it is.
