Muffet still rolling brains-wise, trying everything to get everyone functioning. Hannah Huffman and Mychal Johnson add so much to this defense, that as long as the other team isn't too big, we can zone anyone's brains out.

Arike is still, unfortunately, "defense-optional" WAY too much of the time. Diamond Thompson{?} shows some understanding of the defense, yet had four fouls in small minutes. When you watch those plays closely you see that it is usually Arike who should be pounding back in there as help side. Instead that side of the floor shows wide open gaps too much. Contrast when the help needs to come from people like Mychal or Maddy etc. NO offense then happens. Muffet has a lot of wild horse taming to do.

Really liked that Mychal took several shots. The last one, when Cocoa committed another clumsy foul to negate it, was pure in-rhythm offense. Please God let her feel that rhythm more. We get a little offense from her and we have another very solid player.

Cocoa looks so clumsy, sadly, that she might be useful only as a foul-giver to stop lay-ups. With the better teammates in there, the better choice might be Diamond, as she can at least block a shot regularly and/or intimidate a bit. It's amazing to me that we haven't had better luck recruiting bigs. Thank God Brianna is a first-team AA [in my opinion].

#2 Irish Coast by Clemson, 71-52 :: Notre Dame Women's Basketball :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of Notre Dame Athletics

Notre Dame freshman scoring machine Arike Ogunbowale only has one setting when she comes off the bench for the No. 2 Fighting Irish -- attack mode.

That was the case Thursday night when Ogunbowale scored 16 points in 22 minutes to help Notre Dame ease by Clemson 71-52 for its 20th straight win and a share of the ACC regular-season title.

''Attacking mode, that's what I like to do, so that's what I focus on,'' Ogunbowale said.

Averaging just a shade under 12 points per game, Ogunbowale's instant offense earned high praise from head coach Muffet McGraw.

''I think she's the best sixth-man in the game,'' McGraw said. ''She's doing so many things that are exciting to watch. It's a real luxury to have somebody that talented coming off the bench. We get better when she comes in the game.''

...

Kathryn Westbeld sat out with an ankle injury suffered

Notre Dame has won 20 straight games for a fifth consecutive season.

Inside The Game: #2/3 Notre Dame 71, Clemson 52 :: Notre Dame Women's Basketball :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of Notre Dame Athletics
Chris Masters

Unsung Hero: Senior guard Hannah Huffman got the call in the starting lineup in place of injured sophomore forward Kathryn Westbeld and delivered with a career-high five assists (against just one turnover), along with five points and four rebounds.

Unofficial Play of the Game: Huffman helped jump-start a sluggish Notre Dame offense midway through the first quarter, driving down the lane and finishing with a left-handed layup as she was fouled by Clemson’s Aliyah Collier. Huffman converted the free throw for her second career three-point play and the Fighting Irish grabbed a 12-6 lead with 6:15 left in the opening period.

Brianna Turner recorded her 70th blocked shot of the year, becoming the second player in program history with multiple 70-block seasons (she had 89 last year; Ruth Riley had at least 71 blocks in each of her four seasons from 1997-98 to 2000-01, finishing with a school-record 113 rejections)

Cable played in her 138th career game, tying for fifth on the Fighting Irish all-time games played list with former teammate Markisha Wright (’15)

Kristina Nelson and Diamond Thompson each recorded a career-high two blocks (Nelson tying her personal best).

Prior to Saturday’s game against Boston College, Notre Dame will take time to honor its five departing seniors (guards Madison Cable, Hannah Huffman and Michaela Mabrey, plus student managers Katie Higgins and Jasmine Smith) for their contributions to the program.

Notre Dame is 32-6 (.842) all-time on Senior Night, including a 25-3 (.893) record in the Muffet McGraw era (1987-88 to present). In fact, the Fighting Irish lost their first Senior Night game under McGraw (69-68 vs. DePaul in 1988), but have proceeded to win on 25 of the past 27 Senior Nights since then. The only setbacks during this current stretch came in 2002, when Villanova edged the Fighting Irish, 48-45, to break Notre Dame’s school-record 51-game home winning streak, and in 2007, when Rutgers pulled away late for a 76-60 win.

Now is not the time to worry about next season, but I'll bet that our great coach wonders just a bit as to where the "Fire" will come for that team, once Maddy and Hannah leave. {we just had an experience in the recent past of an intensity collapse when the Natalie Achonwa team lost her --- their fire --- at the worst possible time.}

I wish that I saw where Maddy's and Hannah's replacement in that area is coming from; neither Brianna [by ultra-quiet personality] nor Lindsay [who gets furious but doesn't seem to have the extroversion/physicality to deliver that vocal demand or overt bleed-to-win attitude onto others to see] will fill that role, I think --- but REALLY hope that they do. Lindsay is our best hope. [Hannah has been ostensibly physical, body and facially, and Maddy constantly leaves her skin on the floor for her teammates.]

It sometimes seems that Marina might be that sort of person once she gets a bit older/more "veteran". She is not opposed to banging around in any situation with a bit of malice aforethought {unlike her sister who plays a bit like a princess.} Arike? Who knows where her head is at as far as her teammates are concerned. She's physical, but doesn't seem at all like a leader. If Mychal Johnson becomes more of a factor, her personality might be Maddy/Hannah-like; she then may feel that she's earned the right to speak out and lead.

We can replace the skills of our seniors, but I worry about replacing their intangibles.

Irish don't have an offensive rebound but there aren't many when you're shooting 73% from the floor, 60% from the arc, and 88% from the line.
